Have a safe, wonderful and joyous holiday!!

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:
Congratulations to Spencer Noble, Jordan Cross, Franco Spadoni, Tyler Escott, Banks Hunter, Matthew Eaton, Olivia Pham, and Jim Stone, who have been selected to participate in the 2010 Washington Aerospace Scholars program. These juniors have been selected from a competitive, statewide field of applicants. In January, they will engage in an online NASA-designed curriculum, which is a prerequisite for consideration in a summer residency experience at the Museum of Flight. Kudos to our juniors!

Congratulations are also in order to Sam Swan who has been selected as the Sodo Rotary Student of the Month for December! Sam will enjoy a luncheon with the Rotary members this Friday at which he will accept his award. Congratulations are also overdue to Jaime Katzer, who was selected as Sodo’s November Student of the Month! Sam and Jaime now join other senior Rotary honorees for consideration of a scholarship that will be awarded at the Senior Awards Ceremony on June 6.

The winter holiday break begins this weekend! During this time away from school, I wish you all the merriest, the most joyous, peaceful, and loving times spent with family and friends. This giving time of year represents an opportunity to do good for someone who may be experiencing challenges in life. If snow falls, you may have a neighbor or two who could use a helping hand with shoveling a driveway or steps. Opening doors for package-laden shoppers, helping out at a local food bank or shelter, or extending a kind greeting to someone whose face is not lit with a smile, may bring you more joy than you ever imagined. And whatever your holiday traditions may be…cherish them well. See you in 2010 for the start of a fabulous new year!
Love to all, Reba

FROM ASB
Wish winter break was a little bit longer? Well DON'T! The long anticipated winter tolo will give you something to look forward to after winter break. The date for this year's tolo is Saturday, January 16, 2010 at 8:00-11:00 PM, and the theme is "Jungle Boogie." So break out that leopard print, zebra stripes, or any other animal patterns you can find and we'll see you there! Tickets will be on sale from January 4-15, 2009, don’t wait until the last minute this time! Prices for singles are $10 w/ASB and $14 without; prices for couple’s are $18 w/ASB and $26 without. Stay tuned in for the spirit week days you won't want to miss!

Chaperones are needed the night of the dance, teachers or parents please let Mrs. Hiranaka in the office know ASAP if you would like to go.

Your Sophomore Class Captains, Libanos Redda & James Kelley

Happy Holidays!
Let’s all get into the holiday spirit by participating in this week’s Advisory Competitions! This year, we’re holding a Gingerbread House building and Door Decorating contest. More information will be provided by your advisor. The advisory that works together this Holiday Season will be the ones to win the super-awesome-amazing mystery prize!

On Friday, be ready to dust off those old holiday sweaters and show them off on our Holiday Sweater spirit day! Prizes will be awarded for the most festive, the most original, and the most ugly or tacky!

SOME WAYS TO GIVE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
Unknowingly, many families in our local community go hungry and without any gifts during the holiday season and this year we can help by donating food and money. For the next eight (8) days collection bins will be in each advisory. Bring your non –perishable food items and place them in any teacher’s room, or in the office. Food donations will benefit the Des Moines Food Bank.

Aviation High School has adopted a family again this year to help provide gifts for this upcoming holiday season. This year we are holding an “empty your pockets” drive to raise money to donate to the Highline School District social workers. Each day during advisory empty your change and small bills and help give a family at our school a happy holiday. We will come to advisories and be in the hall, so be on the look out! Collection will start Tuesday, December 7, and will run through December 16(next Wednesday). Get into the holiday spirit, don’t be a Scrooge!

On November 29, four police officers were tragically killed in the line of duty. This holiday season will be especially difficult for the family members. The Lake Wood Police Department has set up a fund to donate to the family members of the slain officers, if you are interested in helping, please visit: http://www.lpig.us/

FROM THE COUNSELOR
Seniors, FAFSA help is on the way! Financial Aid professionals will be available from 2 PM to 7 PM January 4 through January 7 at Tyee Educational Complex to help you and your family fill out the FAFSA. A financial aid counselor will be presenting general financial aid information at AHS during advisory on January 19.

A GIFT THAT COUNTS
Attention students and staff! Next month, members from leadership class will be holding a fundraiser. We encourage everyone to bring in slightly used, or unused winter wear for those in need. Bring your coats, hats, and gloves to the main office, where a donation box will be located. The donations will be given to the Regina House, and will be picked up on January 18th, so be ready to donate!

COLD WEATHER REMINDER
When the weather turns cold, some families turn to potentially dangerous sources of heat. King County Public Health reminds us to:
ONLY use a generator outdoors and far from open windows or vents.
NEVER use a generator indoors, in garages, or carports.
NEVER cook or heat inside on a charcoal or gas grill.

MUSEUM OF FLIGHT
Celebrate the Wright brothers first flight along with the spirit of the season at the Museum's annual Wright Spirit holiday event. Santa Claus arrives by helicopter at 10 a.m., and he and Mrs. Claus will greet children in the Great Gallery until 2 p.m.--don't forget to bring your camera!

Additional Wright Spirit activities include a visit from a reindeer from Cougar Mountain Zoo (9:30 - 10:30 a.m.), a performance from the Seattle Lutheran Bell Choir (11 a.m.) a performance by the Boeing Orchestra of Flight (12:30 p.m.) and much more! Dec. 12 is the first day for Museum members to sign their children up for the 2010 Aerospace Camp Experience summer camp.
Free admission for youths 17 and under continues through Dec. 20, thanks to a generous grant from the Norman Archibald Charitable Foundation. To celebrate our Kids Free days, the Museum of Flight Store will offer a 10% discount on all toys in the store. This means that members receive an additional 10% on top of the normal 15% Store discount. Museum visitors are encouraged to donate unwrapped toys at the Museum Store's Toys for Tots donation bin, through Sunday, Dec. 13.

To further celebrate the season, the Store will also offer surprise discounts between now and the end of the year on entire categories of products, so visit the store often to take advantage of the great prices.

Lastly, if you prefer to do your shopping online, we are offering 50% off the cost of shipping for qualifying orders (in-store discounts do not apply but members always receive the member discount).

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:
There’s a new award in the main office—a shiny fan blade made by Rolls Royce for a Boeing 787 aircraft. If you haven’t yet seen it, I encourage you to stop by for an appreciative look. It was delivered last week, along with a $5,000 donation for scholarship awards. Seniors…watch for more news about how to apply! The company leadership has also offered an opportunity for a group of our students to tour their plant in Everett, so if you are interested in going, please send me an email prior to December 18. We are most grateful for our wonderful partners who so generously support our school, so join me in a big shout-out of thanks to Rolls Royce!
Thanks to all of you who have been helping us with marketing and recruitment. You are great ambassadors for Aviation High School, and I stand in awe of how well you articulate your learning and excitement for our school! Applications from 8th graders are arriving daily, with interest level being higher than in any previous year. So far, we have presented to Cascade, Pacific, and Chinook Middle Schools in the Highline District, and we’re scheduled to present to Sylvester students this Thursday. Tomorrow night is our second evening Information Program, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., so if you know of interested 8th graders, please encourage them to attend.
We will continue to have several visitors on campus during the next two weeks as part of our efforts to inform people about our school and ask for their support with our capital campaign. Thanks for being so gracious as we continue on our journey to realize our goal of building a new school for you at The Museum of Flight!
Congratulations to our awesome Speech & Debate Team for a great showing at the Auburn Valley Invitational this past Saturday. Two teams competed, and both placed in the top four. Justin Dubinsky and Libanos Redda placed 3rd overall in Public Forum Debate while Hayk Saakian and John Doty placed 2nd overall in the same event. Good job, Mr. Shiroma and students! We’re proud of you!
Our Skunkworks Robotics Team also enjoyed a productive weekend as they hosted the 3rd FLL Des Moines Regional, with 21 teams participating, many of them in their rookie year. Compliments were plentiful for our Skunks, parents, volunteers, Coach Steele, and mentors for an outstanding job of organizing this event for younger students to get them excited about math, science, and technology by building robots to apply their knowledge and skills! A few Skunk alums even returned to serve as judges along with some alumni parents! Now that is dedication! 
Many of our graduates in the Classes of 2008 and 2009 are likely to be stopping by over the next two weeks. This represents a great opportunity for you to chat with them about college life. I encourage you to do so!
My best to you for an action-packed, awesome week of learning! Honored to be your principal… ~Reba

COMMUNITY SERVICE UPDATE
On Saturday, Northwest Harvest hosted food donation sites all over the region – they call it their biggest day of the year. Through our Interact Club connection, six Aviation High School students volunteered to help at the Kent warehouse with the amazing volume of donated food items for the annual food drive. Many thanks to Amanuail Ambaye, Yashkarn Bains, Alyssa Hernandez, Victoria Le, Christian Navarro, and Kathryn Shaw for working with other volunteers – after two hours of unpacking large pallets of donated food, separating items, re-packaging individual boxes, weighing the boxes and re-loading pallets for delivery to local food banks, these students and the others helped get 15,000 pounds of food to neighbors in need. Nice job!

FOR SKUNKS’ PARENTS:

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:
Message from the Principal: Welcome back from the Thanksgiving holiday break! I hope your time away was enjoyable and that you are now ready to re-engage in learning as we speed toward another holiday break that begins on December 19! Student led conferences have concluded, and hopefully you have reflected on your progress this year and defined or refined your learning goals for the semester. If not, there’s no time like the present to do so!

We are in the midst of our recruitment season for next year’s freshman class, so I am spending today at Cascade Middle School with a group of students, and on Friday of this week several of us will be at Chinook Middle School. Next week, December 8th, is our second evening Information Program for 8th graders and families, so many of you may be asked by teachers and staff to assist with this important event. If you know of younger students who may be interested in learning more about Aviation High School, please encourage them and their parents to attend an evening information program. The final program is scheduled for February 2, 2010.

We also have several visitors on campus this week; in fact, two tour groups are scheduled for Wednesday, one from 8-10 a.m. and another from 1-3 p.m. You will see us in your classrooms and in the hallways, so expect to be asked some questions and engage in conversation with our guests, if appropriate to do so. At approximately 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Rolls Royce will be delivering the fan blade award that will be displayed in our office until we have a more permanent exhibit area. While we can’t gather everyone in the main office, you may want to be on the watch in the front courtyard during lunch to see this magnificent award delivered and to join me and Griffin Nicoll, our first award recipient, in thanking Rolls Royce.

Again, welcome back! Enjoy an unparalleled week of learning! The sky is NOT the limit at Aviation High School, and I’m proud to be your principal. ~Reba

ATTENTION ALL AHS STUDENTS!
MTV’S MADE IS COMING TO AHS (THE FOLLOWING ANNOUNCEMENT IS FROM MTV…SO THE ‘WE’ AND ‘OURS’ IS IN REFERENCE TO MTV)

MTV’s 2 time Emmy award winning series “MADE” is all about making dreams come true. We want to demonstrate that with hard work (and a little help from MTV) any goal is attainable.

There are many kids out there with unlimited potential. However, in their eyes, intimidating obstacles exist that keep them from pursuing their dreams. Perhaps they’re painfully shy or fall short on self-confidence. Maybe they don’t think they’re cool enough or lack the right look. Perhaps they’ve been told that they lack the skills; and then there’s plain old fear.

We seek out the kids who are eager to overcome those obstacles! These are the students who want to be MADE.

Once MTV finds our “subjects,” we allow for at least one month of intensive training towards achieving their goals. This includes providing a mentor or life coach who will support them and plot out personalized training schedules. Such training could consist of counseling on confidence or attitude, personal training sessions, or specialized lessons in whatever task they’re trying to achieve.

Whether they succeed at their goal or not, we strive to give these kids a chance at a dream. Ideally, they learn valuable traits and lessons about themselves and others along the way. They ultimately realize that it takes hard work, persistence, and commitment to make one’s dreams come true.

Let’s Get Made!

If you are interested in auditioning for Made pick up your application packet in the office. Auditions will be before school on Tuesday, December 8.

SPEECH & DEBATE
Speech & Debate went to two competitions in the month of November. At the Snohomish tournament, Ted Tagami and Hayk Saakian took 2nd place in Public Forum Debate out of a total of 20 teams. Ted, Hayk, and Rebecca Ly also just barely missed finals in speech.

At the Tahoma tournament, Albert Ta received the 5th best speaker award in novice, Justin Dubinsky received the 10th best speaker award in open, and Hayk received the 6th best speaker award in Public Forum Debate. Once again, the team barely missed breaking into the final round in their corresponding speech events.

Message from the Principal:
I was so impressed with the turnout for student-led conferences last Wednesday! Congratulations to all students who presented last week, and best to those who are presenting tonight. Parents, a special thank you to you, too! Your support of your children throughout their high school years contributes significantly to their confidence and academic achievement.

Most of you know that partnerships with aviation and aerospace-related companies are the backbone of our school. This past Saturday evening, 24 AHS students, along with Mr. McComb and I, had the opportunity to attend the Joe Sutter (father of the 747 aircraft) Dinner at the Museum of Flight. The Seattle Chapter of the Royal Aeronautical Society sponsors this annual black tie event, and it always features a guest lecturer. This year’s speaker, Dr. Richard P. Hallion, provided a thorough overview about the evolution of flight testing over the last century. We learned that STEM-savvy workers were the key to past successes and are, indeed, the key to future successes in aeronautics. The speaker mentioned Aviation High School several times during his speech, noting that such a school, with students who aspire to be innovators and leaders in aerospace, provides reassurance that the next 100 years of flight test will be even more astounding than the previous 100 years!

I thoroughly enjoyed Saturday evening’s presentation by the guest lecturer, but the highlight of the evening came when a new award, called the Spirit of Excellence, was presented to Griffin Nicoll, AHS senior. This award was presented by Rolls Royce, and will become an annual tradition at the Joe Sutter Dinner. Along with a gift presented personally to Griffin, in recognition of his ‘out of the box’—in fact, dissolve the box—thinking, programming skills, teamwork abilities, and commitment to engineering excellence, a unique gift is coming to Aviation High School that will be proudly displayed in a place of honor. The gift is a full-size 787/Trent 1000, five-ft. fan blade that is made in the UK by Rolls Royce. Griffin’s name will be engraved on it as the first recipient, and each year another name will be added. So…hearty congratulations to Griffin, and sincere thanks to Rolls Royce for their generosity, thoughtfulness, and foresight in recognizing that all of you are cultivating a spirit of excellence that will ensure a thriving future for our country!

And speaking of thanks, please know that I’m thankful for each and everyone of you at Aviation High School. I’m also thankful for our extended family of parents and friends who believe in us and show their support in various ways throughout the entire year. I’m blessed to be your principal, and I wish you and yours a very happy Thanksgiving! With much love—Reba

An Opportunity to host an International Student:
Give the Gift of Friendship; Host Matthias, an AFS student for the second semester of the 09/10 school year.

Matthias (17) of Austria is a perfect candidate for the Aviation HS as he loves flying. He inherited this quality from his Dad. Matthias's family is close-knit. The shared family activities are traveling, cycling and skiing. Matthias also loves photography and enjoys all outdoor activities Matthias. He is helpful around the house as he mows the grass, keeps his room neat, and sets the table etc. Matthias is an ‘A’ student and he has studied English for six and a half years. Matthias is goal-oriented. He is organized. He is easy-going and tolerant. He also exhibits leadership skills and he enjoys group activities.
AFS is looking for a host family for Matthias. Preferably, he would like to have host siblings close to his age.

AFS families are not paid with money but with everlasting memories. AFS host families are responsible for room and board including school lunches. AFS students have personal spending money and full health benefits. Students are supported with two mandatory orientations and by a liaison. Host families prior to picking up their students have an orientation and they are also supported by a liaison. This liaison contacts the student and the host family monthly to see how each are doing. AFS students can share a bedroom with a host sibling. They are to be treated as family members not as guests. Matthias hopes to stay in touch with his host family for the rest of his life.

Matthias arrives in Washington around January 15, 2010 and leaves at the end of June. He will not start school until the beginning of the second semester. Volunteers will help entertain him prior to the beginning of the second semester.

If your family is interested in hosting Matthias, please contact Anne Davis, our AFS Aviation volunteer at 206-444-0953 or e-mail her at
davisa3@msn.com. She can then send you his full application and get the information from you so that an online host family application can be sent to you. As mandated by the US State Department, all members over the age of 13 are required to have background checks. Matthias needs to be family placed by the end of November so that he can get his student visa to study in the USA. The Aviation HS has accepted him and now, time is of the essence, to find him a host family by the end of November.

Message from the Principal:
Thank you to everyone who participated in our first Informational Program for 8th graders and families last week. By far, we had the largest crowd ever at this event! Our marketing and recruitment efforts are in full swing, and applications are being accepted. If you know of students/families who are interested in attending a future informational program, please let them know that our next program is scheduled for December 8 from 6:30-8:30, and our final program will be held February 2, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
As we begin a new week, I am reflecting on Saturday evening’s auction that was held at the Museum of Flight and sponsored by our amazing PTSA. It was simply outrageous—a sold-out crowd of 380 generous and exuberant supporters, a fabulous array of auction items for both the silent and live auctions, and a venue with vintage aircraft and exhibits that would inspire even the most reluctant auction-goers! J Please join me in thanking Teri Katzer, Auction Chair, and her team of worker bees (Liz Campisteguy, Julie Zaballos, Dayna Miller, and Bonnie Gustafson to name a few) for their remarkable skills in planning and organizing our 2009 auction! It was obvious that this team was intent on ensuring that every single detail was attended to in order to make the evening go smoothly. So…when you see any member of this team, please show your Phoenix gratitude for making the “The Sky is NOT the Limit Auction” an amazing success; after all, YOU are the beneficiaries of their hard work!

Student-led conferences begin this Wednesday evening, which provides an opportunity for you to explain your progress to your parents. I encourage you and your parents to make every attempt to attend this important conference. It’s an opportune time for reflection and charting your course to success for the remainder of the school year. Make it count!
Engage fully in your learning this week! As ever, I’m honored to be your principal! ~Reba

The Sky is Not the Limit PTSA Auction 5:30-10:00 p.m. at The Museum of Flight

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:
I spent most of last week in our nation’s capital, where I met with senators and representatives as well as members of the Department of Education, to tell the story of Aviation High School and our quest to permanently locate at the Museum of Flight by Year 2012. It was a productive trip, and rewarding in that many folks already knew about our great little school and our unique instructional program that uses the theme of aviation as a “hook” for learning. I returned home with an even more optimistic outlook for the future of AHS, and a ton of gratitude for the leaders in D.C. who recognize that the quality of our education system equals the quality of our lives!

As I walked the grounds surrounding the Capitol last week, I was also filled with an enormous sense of pride in our country, and for all things that are right in the world. I thought about all the visionary leaders and brave soldiers who have defended our country through the toughest of times. I thought about what it now means to be an American. And, I remembered that this week we are celebrating Veteran’s Day, and as I always do at this time of year, I fondly remembered my Uncle Charles who fought in World War II and became a prisoner of war. This morning’s assembly was a special tribute to all our uncles, aunts, brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, friends and family members—known or unknown—who so selflessly gave of themselves to protect our freedoms. Our speakers were inspiring as they told their stories, and your attentiveness and sharing of your own stories were so very heartfelt and moving. As you enjoy a day off from school on Wednesday, I know that you’ll also remember that it’s Veteran’s Day. “Salute” someone special to you on this very special day of remembrance.

Today marks the start of second quarter! I saw some amazing work being performed and exhibited last week as you wrapped up your learning for first quarter. I’m proud of all of you!
I hope to see many parents, friends, and some of you at the PTSA auction this Saturday evening! I know that you all have contributed to this important event, which enhances your learning at Aviation High School. We are fortunate to have a dynamic, committed PTSA! The sky is NOT the limit!
Proud to be your principal… ~Reba

FROM THE COUNSELOR:

ATTENDANCE NOTICES:
With the flu season upon us, we remind you that if you miss school, a note is required within 24 hours of your return to school (This is a change from the previously reported 48 hours). Remember, too, that if a student is absent from school for the day, s/he cannot attend a school event that same evening. (You know that the AHS attendance lady often attends evening events!)

THE SKUNKWORKS ROBOTICS Junior Varsity VEX team competed in Redmond this weekend. The team entered two robots and competed against 27 competitors from Washington and British Columbia. The teams did very well and after some initial issues, the robots and their operators were performing well. Both robots were selected for the final tournament. Although the teams did not make it in to the Semi-finals, team members came away with a better understanding of what it takes to be competitive. The JV team will compete again in February and they plan on being a greater force on the field. Thank you to all the senior robotics team members who acted as mentors and to all the parents and mentors that came to support them.
We are less than 2 months away from the kickoff for the FRC (big robots) competition.

IMPORTANT TRANSCRIPT INFORMATION:
Students who need transcripts should pick up and complete the orange Transcript Request form from the main office. All students needing a copy of their transcript (official or unofficial) MUST fully complete the form and return it to the registrar (Ms. Lefevre). Incomplete requests will be returned to students for completion. Students requiring an official transcript sent to a college or institution need to address the envelope and put a stamp on the envelope. PLAN AHEAD. We do our best to get them out right away but during college application season we get so many requests it can take up to 2 -4 days. Thank you.

ATTENTION ALL DANCE ATTENDEES:
If you attend any AHS dances and take pictures, please send them to dancepicturesAHS@gmail.com so that they may be debuted in the yearbook! Thanks from Jill Madsen, Isaiah Bell and Zack Johnson

Message from the Principal:

Did you know that you have a free membership to the Museum of Flight? Your membership card is your Aviation High School ASB Card. Simply show it to the doorman at the Museum, and then enjoy the many exhibits that are part of the Personal Courage Wing and the artifacts that are displayed in the Great Gallery. Perhaps you’ll even want to climb in a simulator for a short “flight” with friends.
History comes alive at the Museum, and whether you think you’re an aviation enthusiast or not, you become one in the presence of the remarkable people you meet and stories you hear. Each time I leave the Museum, I feel more grateful than ever to be an American.

We are fortunate to have such a world class museum in our region, and I encourage you to take advantage of your membership. And, as the holiday season approaches, you may want to encourage your parents, families, and friends to give the gift of a Museum membership. The Museum is celebrating its 45th anniversary in 2010, and I can only imagine how incredible the exhibits will be in this very special year. In purchasing a membership, you will be helping the Museum “…preserve our history and to inspire future generations, to remain caretakers of dreamers, visionaries, courageous explorers, and entrepreneurs.” (Dr. Bonnie J. Dunbar, Aloft Magazine, November/December 2009). Membership information is available on the Museum’s website at
http://www.museumofflight.org.
Juniors…speaking of the Museum of Flight: Your application for Washington Aerospace Scholars (WAS) is due this week! Remember to get your recommendations submitted along with your application. WAS represents an incredible learning experience for you!

This week marks the end of first quarter and start of second quarter.
I encourage you to make every minute of learning count! And…on Thursday evening, consider attending a presentation by Dr. James Joki, whom many of you met at Pathfinder a few weeks ago. Dr. Joki has a dynamic personality, and his accomplishments are many. Bring the family and enjoy!
Ever proud to be your principal… ~Reba

Opportunity for Community Service!

Southern Heights Elementary School is developing an adult ELL program to help serve their students’ families. It’s a great opportunity for high school students who are bilingual to serve as translators and gain valuable community service and experience. Currently, they are seeking students who are fluent in Spanish, Vietnamese, Samoan, as well as Tongan. The coordinator of the program has extended the invitation personally to AHS. If you have questions or are interested in signing up, please feel free to contact Kari O’Brien (obrienka@hsd401.org) or call her at (206) 631-5000. Your AHS contact is Ms. Pappas.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:

If you have not seen it yet, I encourage you to direct your attention to the new and improved Aviation High School website. You can subscribe to the Notice to Airmen Blog, follow our Twitter, and stay up to date on the goings-on around school with the school calendar. Visitors can also get information about admissions, some of our many projects, the capital campaign for our new building, and lots more.

Over 1.5 million students took the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) last October and entered the National Merit Program, a nationwide competition for recognition and awards conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Only 34,000 students (~ 2%) were named as Commended Students for their excellent performance on the PSAT/NMSQT and we just happen to have three of the 34,000 commended students attending Aviation High School: Ryan Sanders, Rebecca Pham, and Michael Thompson! I know that our entire learning community joins me in saying, “Congratulations, and we’re proud of you!” As noted on their certificates from NMSC, “…recognition as a Commended Student is a credit to you, your parents, and your high school.” Ryan, Rebecca, and Michael—we celebrate with you and applaud such a remarkable accomplishment!

Congratulations to ASB for sponsoring a successful Spirit Week and a wonderful dance on Saturday. It was quite interesting to see how many of you dressed when you were nine years old! Do any of you see a change in Mr. McComb now that he is in his mature years?

Congratulations are also due Culture Club for sponsoring a wonderful potluck the previous week, and to Honor Society for organizing the Blood Drive a few weeks ago. I’m proud of all of you for being such good citizens and scholars!

Thanks, too, to so many of you for showcasing your learning to members of the Education Committee of the Washington State House of Representatives last week. They were duly impressed and enlightened, and I have confidence that they will remember Aviation High School when the legislative session begins in January! After all, the sky is NOT the limit! Proud to be your principal… ~Reba

The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and Society of Flight Test Engineers (SFTE) are hosting their November evening meeting at AHS. Dr. James Joki, an engaging storyteller and a 2009 Pathfinder, will be the speaker.

Dr. Joki received a BS degree in aeronautics and astronautics at the University of Washington. After graduation, he served NASA in a flight controls position in Houston, Tex. An interest in space medicine directed him towards the Extravehicular Mobility Unit (that’s ‘space suit’ to most of us). Dr. Joki later served NASA as a designer and flight controller.

Dr. Joki’s interest in space medicine prompted him to return to school to become an Ob/Gyn. He has enjoyed a successful career at Northwest Hospital, delivering over 5,000 children during his time there.

UPCOMING EVENTS AND PROGRAMS AT THE MUSEUM OF FLIGHT:
October 31 - Galileo: What I Saw Through My Telescope
November 7 - International Year of Astronomy Lecture: Astrobiology - Is There Life Out There?

Quote of the Week
What gain was there for such a risk? There would be no crowd to watch and applaud my landing. Nor was there any scientific objective to be gained. No, there was deeper reason for wanting to jump, a desire I could not explain.

It was that quality that led me into aviation in the first place — it was a love of the air and sky and flying, the lure of adventure, the appreciation of beauty. It lay beyond the descriptive words of man — where immortality is touched through danger, where life meets death on equal plane; where man is more than man, and existence both supreme and valueless at the same instant.

Charles A. Lindbergh, contemplating his first parachute jump, The Spirit of St Louis (1953)

Message from the Principal:
“Time flies when you’re having fun!” I’m not sure who deserves credit for this saying, but it is certainly true at Aviation High School! This is a busy and exciting week, with Spirit Days planned by the ASB, leading up to the first dance of the school year on Saturday evening. I encourage you to get actively involved in school life, and attending the Aviators’ Ball will be one good way of doing so. For those of you who have a mentor, Wednesday morning represents a great opportunity to have a light breakfast with him/her, share some of the highlights of the year, so far, and discuss your plans for college and career. We also have more VIPs on campus this week. The House Education Committee, led by Representative Dave Quall, is holding a meeting on our campus this Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. As members of the Washington State Legislature, they are interested in learning more about STEM models that are emerging in our State. We will have an opportunity to present our program to them from 9:00-10:30 a.m., so you will most likely see us in classrooms, and some of you will be asked to make remarks during the opening session and demonstrate your learning. Other STEM schools that will be presenting their programs include Delta High School in the Tri-Cities and the Science & Math Institute (SAMI) at Point Defiance in Tacoma, both which opened this fall. This is a public meeting, so you may see many visitors on our campus throughout the day. I am inquiring if it might be possible for some student representatives to attend certain parts of the program throughout the day, so check with your advisor on Tuesday or Wednesday if you have interest in attending.

And speaking about “time”…it’s almost time for first quarter to come to an end, which means it is also time to reflect on your work so far in all your classes! And, if you determine that you need any extra help, enlist the support of your teachers, counselor, mentor, support staff, administration, and of course, your parents or whomever you feel can best support your learning. Asking for help is a big part of being accountable for your own learning, so please don’t hesitate to ask for what you need. We want your learning to be in a constant state of acceleration, so failing or falling behind are not suitable options at AHS. The end of first quarter is November 6, so plan accordingly, and know that you have lots of people who care about you and your learning at Aviation High School!

And looking back in time to last week…thank you to so many of you who shared your enthusiasm and demonstrated your learning as we hosted a visit with Mr. Charlie Rose from the U.S. Department of Education. As always, I was immensely proud of you as well as our many friends (parents, mentors, board members, aviation and aerospace leaders, community citizens) who also attended the meeting to voice their support for our school and locating to the Museum of Flight in the near future. The Sky is NOT the limit! Each day at AHS makes me a stronger believer in this statement! I’m honored to be your principal! ~Reba

Also, hearty congratulations to Alex Cox for his contribution and involvement in the local and international communities through Rotary Club. Alex was honored at the Burien-White Center Rotary meeting on Thursday October 15th. Way to go, Alex!

Thanks to everyone from the AHS Music Club: The AHS Music Club thanks everyone who has supported our instrument drive this year. With your help, we have already purchased new microphones and a new bass guitar amplifier, and we’ve been able to get repairs done on other equipment as well. We’re really looking forward to performing for you this year, and we’re working hard at learning our new recording studio. We hope to record a compilation album of all of our bands to share with you by the end of the year! We also invite you to come listen to us play and rehearse on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. It’s great practice for us to have an audience, and you get to hear some amazing original music, so…Stop by any time! So thanks again to everyone who has supported the AHS Music Club, and remember—the instrument drive is still going on, so dig through your basements, attics and garages, and bring us your old, unused instruments and music equipment.

We still need your support! Thank you, Aviation High School from the AHS Music Club!

Message from the Principal:
The 28th annual Pathfinder Gala was held this past Saturday evening at the Museum of Flight. It was a splendid evening in which we learned about the many accomplishments of the Pathfinder recipients, Dr. Joki and Mr. Roundhill. It was an absolute pleasure to be in the company of almost 80 students who wrote essays and attended etiquette training to qualify for the honor of attending this prestigious event. We are grateful for the generous support of our sponsors, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Galvin Flying/Peter Anderson. A special thanks is also due Mr. Peter Morton, for coordinating the event and including Aviation High School students and alumni, and for developing a Pathfinder internship program that allowed Kristina Ong and Jaime Katzer to learn the art and skills associated with event planning/preparation.

For those students who attended Pathfinder, I gently remind you that your homework is due today! Please turn in your reflection paper and your thank you note or letter to Lenore Stark or Theda Hiranaka in the main office. I also encourage you to share the experience with your peers in advisory. Most importantly, don’t forget to follow-up with those people whom you met during the social, at your dinner table, and during the networking session after the event ended! And now…we can look forward to Pathfinder 2010! J

We have two different groups visiting our school this week. Mr. Charles Rose is General Counsel for the U.S. Department of Education, and he and a group of his staffers will be on campus from 1:00-3:00 p.m. this Wednesday. Some of you may be asked to participate in a “listening session” with Mr. Rose as well as demonstrate your learning. Mr. Rose is conducting visits throughout the nation to learn more about certain schools and their instructional programs. He has a particular interest in STEM-focused schools, so he has asked to visit us to learn more about our instructional program and our journey to locate our school at The Museum of Flight. Please welcome him when you see him on Wednesday.

On Thursday morning, a group of educators from a start-up STEM school in Ohio will be our guests. They will be here from 8:00-11:00 a.m., and we will be calling on both staff and students to interact with them. Since this is a return visit for a few of them, they may choose to just spend time in various classes to learn from you…so again, please give them a warm Phoenix welcome and share your learning with them.

My best to you for an engaging week of learning! Always proud to be your principal… ~Reba
