Message from the Principal:
I was so impressed with the turnout for student-led conferences last Wednesday! Congratulations to all students who presented last week, and best to those who are presenting tonight. Parents, a special thank you to you, too! Your support of your children throughout their high school years contributes significantly to their confidence and academic achievement.

Most of you know that partnerships with aviation and aerospace-related companies are the backbone of our school. This past Saturday evening, 24 AHS students, along with Mr. McComb and I, had the opportunity to attend the Joe Sutter (father of the 747 aircraft) Dinner at the Museum of Flight. The Seattle Chapter of the Royal Aeronautical Society sponsors this annual black tie event, and it always features a guest lecturer. This year’s speaker, Dr. Richard P. Hallion, provided a thorough overview about the evolution of flight testing over the last century. We learned that STEM-savvy workers were the key to past successes and are, indeed, the key to future successes in aeronautics. The speaker mentioned Aviation High School several times during his speech, noting that such a school, with students who aspire to be innovators and leaders in aerospace, provides reassurance that the next 100 years of flight test will be even more astounding than the previous 100 years!

I thoroughly enjoyed Saturday evening’s presentation by the guest lecturer, but the highlight of the evening came when a new award, called the Spirit of Excellence, was presented to Griffin Nicoll, AHS senior. This award was presented by Rolls Royce, and will become an annual tradition at the Joe Sutter Dinner. Along with a gift presented personally to Griffin, in recognition of his ‘out of the box’—in fact, dissolve the box—thinking, programming skills, teamwork abilities, and commitment to engineering excellence, a unique gift is coming to Aviation High School that will be proudly displayed in a place of honor. The gift is a full-size 787/Trent 1000, five-ft. fan blade that is made in the UK by Rolls Royce. Griffin’s name will be engraved on it as the first recipient, and each year another name will be added. So…hearty congratulations to Griffin, and sincere thanks to Rolls Royce for their generosity, thoughtfulness, and foresight in recognizing that all of you are cultivating a spirit of excellence that will ensure a thriving future for our country!

And speaking of thanks, please know that I’m thankful for each and everyone of you at Aviation High School. I’m also thankful for our extended family of parents and friends who believe in us and show their support in various ways throughout the entire year. I’m blessed to be your principal, and I wish you and yours a very happy Thanksgiving! With much love—Reba

Attention All AHS Students! MTV’s Made is coming to AHS
(The following announcement is from MTV…so the ‘we’ and ‘ours’ is in reference to MTV)

MTV’s 2 time Emmy award winning series “MADE” is all about making dreams come true. We want to demonstrate that with hard work (and a little help from MTV) any goal is attainable.

There are many kids out there with unlimited potential. However, in their eyes, intimidating obstacles exist that keep them from pursuing their dreams. Perhaps they’re painfully shy or fall short on self-confidence. Maybe they don’t think they’re cool enough or lack the right look. Perhaps they’ve been told that they lack the skills; and then there’s plain old fear.

We seek out the kids who are eager to overcome those obstacles! These are the students who want to be MADE.

Once MTV finds our “subjects,” we allow for at least one month of intensive training towards achieving their goals. This includes providing a mentor or life coach who will support them and plot out personalized training schedules. Such training could consist of counseling on confidence or attitude, personal training sessions, or specialized lessons in whatever task they’re trying to achieve.

Whether they succeed at their goal or not, we strive to give these kids a chance at a dream. Ideally, they learn valuable traits and lessons about themselves and others along the way. They ultimately realize that it takes hard work, persistence, and commitment to make one’s dreams come true.

Let’s Get Made!

If you are interested in auditioning for Made, fill out the application. Auditions will be before school on Tuesday, December 8.

An Opportunity to host an International Student:
Give the Gift of Friendship; Host Matthias, an AFS student for the second semester of the 09/10 school year.

Matthias (17) of Austria is a perfect candidate for the Aviation HS as he loves flying. He inherited this quality from his Dad. Matthias's family is close-knit. The shared family activities are traveling, cycling and skiing. Matthias also loves photography and enjoys all outdoor activities Matthias. He is helpful around the house as he mows the grass, keeps his room neat, and sets the table etc. Matthias is an ‘A’ student and he has studied English for six and a half years. Matthias is goal-oriented. He is organized. He is easy-going and tolerant. He also exhibits leadership skills and he enjoys group activities.
AFS is looking for a host family for Matthias. Preferably, he would like to have host siblings close to his age.

AFS families are not paid with money but with everlasting memories. AFS host families are responsible for room and board including school lunches. AFS students have personal spending money and full health benefits. Students are supported with two mandatory orientations and by a liaison. Host families prior to picking up their students have an orientation and they are also supported by a liaison. This liaison contacts the student and the host family monthly to see how each are doing. AFS students can share a bedroom with a host sibling. They are to be treated as family members not as guests. Matthias hopes to stay in touch with his host family for the rest of his life.

Matthias arrives in Washington around January 15, 2010 and leaves at the end of June. He will not start school until the beginning of the second semester. Volunteers will help entertain him prior to the beginning of the second semester.

If your family is interested in hosting Matthias, please contact Anne Davis, our AFS Aviation volunteer at 206-444-0953 or e-mail her at
davisa3@msn.com. She can then send you his full application and get the information from you so that an online host family application can be sent to you. As mandated by the US State Department, all members over the age of 13 are required to have background checks. Matthias needs to be family placed by the end of November so that he can get his student visa to study in the USA. The Aviation HS has accepted him and now, time is of the essence, to find him a host family by the end of November.

Except for the Quote of the Week, the following announcements have been posted in previous editions of the NOTAM. They are still important and posted for your information and action, as appropriate:
