Message from the Principal:

Did you know that you have a free membership to the Museum of Flight? Your membership card is your Aviation High School ASB Card. Simply show it to the doorman at the Museum, and then enjoy the many exhibits that are part of the Personal Courage Wing and the artifacts that are displayed in the Great Gallery. Perhaps you’ll even want to climb in a simulator for a short “flight” with friends.
History comes alive at the Museum, and whether you think you’re an aviation enthusiast or not, you become one in the presence of the remarkable people you meet and stories you hear. Each time I leave the Museum, I feel more grateful than ever to be an American.

We are fortunate to have such a world class museum in our region, and I encourage you to take advantage of your membership. And, as the holiday season approaches, you may want to encourage your parents, families, and friends to give the gift of a Museum membership. The Museum is celebrating its 45th anniversary in 2010, and I can only imagine how incredible the exhibits will be in this very special year. In purchasing a membership, you will be helping the Museum “…preserve our history and to inspire future generations, to remain caretakers of dreamers, visionaries, courageous explorers, and entrepreneurs.” (Dr. Bonnie J. Dunbar, Aloft Magazine, November/December 2009). Membership information is available on the Museum’s website at
http://www.museumofflight.org.
Juniors…speaking of the Museum of Flight: Your application for Washington Aerospace Scholars (WAS) is due this week! Remember to get your recommendations submitted along with your application. WAS represents an incredible learning experience for you!

This week marks the end of first quarter and start of second quarter.
I encourage you to make every minute of learning count! And…on Thursday evening, consider attending a presentation by Dr. James Joki, whom many of you met at Pathfinder a few weeks ago. Dr. Joki has a dynamic personality, and his accomplishments are many. Bring the family and enjoy!
Ever proud to be your principal… ~Reba

Veteran’s Day Assembly:
As you may know this year’s Veteran’s Day assembly theme is Honor and Remembrance. We are asking for participation from the students, other than the “open mike” time. During lunch, November 3-4, 2009, the freshmen and sophomore class captains will be in the gym creating a short film that honors those veterans who we personally know. We ask that you stop by and share your thanks and thoughts this Veterans day. Volunteers do not need anything other than share their thoughts and feelings. Please stop by during lunch! Also we still need volunteers for a musical performance during the assembly. If you play an instrument or can sing, we are interested in hearing you audition for us! Please share your talents with us to help honor our veterans. Contact: James Kelley, Libanos Redda, Tran Tonnu and Cornad Nark ASAP. Thank you!

If you are interested, please sign up in the Counseling Center. Ms. Carper, Ms. Pappas, and Ms. Lee.

Opportunity for Community Service!

Southern Heights Elementary School is developing an adult ELL program to help serve their students’ families. They are recruiting translators to help facilitate workshops, which should typically occur once a month for two to three hours in the evening. It’s a great opportunity for high school students who are bilingual to serve as translators and gain valuable community service and experience. Currently, they are seeking students who are fluent in Spanish, Vietnamese, Samoan, as well as Tongan. The coordinator of the program has extended the invitation personally to AHS. If you have questions or are interested in signing up, please feel free to contact Kari O’Brien (obrienka@hsd401.org) or call her at (206) 631-5000. Your AHS contact is Ms. Pappas.

For Aspiring Engineers & Entrepreneurs
The Royal Aeronautical Society – Seattle Branch is hosting the 8th Annual Joe Sutter Dinner on Saturday, 21 November at the Museum of Flight. This black-tie event brings together aeronautical and aerospace engineers from around the world to honor Joe Sutter (considered by many to be the father of the Boeing 747), to learn from interesting speakers, and to network with each other.

Through the generosity of individual and corporate sponsors, 13 (or more, if things go according to plan) AHS students have been invited to attend. Students will be seated with senior management and engineers from Boeing (F22, Air Traffic Management, Sustainment, etc.), Honeywell, Hobart Machined Products, and Rolls-Royce. It will be an extraordinary evening of learning and an extraordinary opportunity for selected students to network.

If you are interested in joining us for this very special occasion, please see Mr. McComb for more details. Prior to attending, students interested in going will be required to:
1) Research the work of Joe Sutter
2) Generate a list of thoughtful questions
3) Participate in etiquette training if they have not already done so

As follow-up to the dinner, students will be required to:
1) Briefly reflect (in writing) on the lessons they learned
2) Write two thank-you notes: one to the Royal Aeronautical Society – Seattle Branch, and one to their sponsor.
