MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:
If you have not seen it yet, I encourage you to direct your attention to the new and improved Aviation High School website. You can subscribe to the Notice to Airmen Blog, follow our Twitter, and stay up to date on the goings-on around school with the school calendar. Visitors can also get information about admissions, some of our many projects, the capital campaign for our new building, and lots more.
Over 1.5 million students took the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) last October and entered the National Merit Program, a nationwide competition for recognition and awards conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Only 34,000 students (~ 2%) were named as Commended Students for their excellent performance on the PSAT/NMSQT and we just happen to have three of the 34,000 commended students attending Aviation High School: Ryan Sanders, Rebecca Pham, and Michael Thompson! I know that our entire learning community joins me in saying, “Congratulations, and we’re proud of you!” As noted on their certificates from NMSC, “…recognition as a Commended Student is a credit to you, your parents, and your high school.” Ryan, Rebecca, and Michael—we celebrate with you and applaud such a remarkable accomplishment!
Congratulations to ASB for sponsoring a successful Spirit Week and a wonderful dance on Saturday. It was quite interesting to see how many of you dressed when you were nine years old! Do any of you see a change in Mr. McComb now that he is in his mature years?
Congratulations are also due Culture Club for sponsoring a wonderful potluck the previous week, and to Honor Society for organizing the Blood Drive a few weeks ago. I’m proud of all of you for being such good citizens and scholars!
Thanks, too, to so many of you for showcasing your learning to members of the Education Committee of the Washington State House of Representatives last week. They were duly impressed and enlightened, and I have confidence that they will remember Aviation High School when the legislative session begins in January! After all, the sky is NOT the limit! Proud to be your principal… ~Reba
FOR ASPIRING ENGINEERS & ENTREPRENEURS
The Royal Aeronautical Society – Seattle Branch is hosting the 8th Annual Joe Sutter Dinner on Saturday, 21 November at the Museum of Flight. This black-tie event brings together aeronautical and aerospace engineers from around the world to honor Joe Sutter (considered by many to be the father of the Boeing 747), to learn from interesting speakers, and to network with each other.
Through the generosity of individual and corporate sponsors, 13 (or more, if things go according to plan) AHS students have been invited to attend. Students will be seated with senior management and engineers from Boeing (F22, Air Traffic Management, Sustainment, etc.), Honeywell, Hobart Machined Products, and Rolls-Royce. It will be an extraordinary evening of learning and an extraordinary opportunity for selected students to network.
If you are interested in joining us for this very special occasion, please see Mr. McComb for more details. Prior to attending, students interested in going will be required to:
1) Research the work of Joe Sutter
2) Generate a list of thoughtful questions
3) Participate in etiquette training if they have not already done so
As follow-up to the dinner, students will be required to:
1) Briefly reflect (in writing) on the lessons they learned
2) Write two thank-you notes: one to the Royal Aeronautical Society – Seattle Branch, and one to their sponsor.
FOR ASPIRING ASTRONAUTS, DOCTORS, AND OTHERS
Mark your calendars for Thursday, 5 November!
The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and Society of Flight Test Engineers (SFTE) are hosting their November evening meeting at AHS. Dr. James Joki, an engaging storyteller and a 2009 Pathfinder, will be the speaker.
Dr. Joki received a BS degree in aeronautics and astronautics at the University of Washington. After graduation, he served NASA in a flight controls position in Houston, Tex. An interest in space medicine directed him towards the Extravehicular Mobility Unit (that’s ‘space suit’ to most of us). Dr. Joki later served NASA as a designer and flight controller.
Dr. Joki’s interest in space medicine prompted him to return to school to become an Ob/Gyn. He has enjoyed a successful career at Northwest Hospital, delivering over 5,000 children during his time there.
Dinner & Networking: 1800 – 1855 (6:00 – 6:55 p.m.)
Speaker: 1900 – 1950 (7:00 – 7:50 p.m.)
Questions & Answers: 1950 – 2000 (7:50 – 8:00 p.m.)
More details forthcoming in next week’s NOTAM.

November 7 - International Year of Astronomy Lecture: Astrobiology - Is There Life Out There?
Quote of the Week
What gain was there for such a risk? There would be no crowd to watch and applaud my landing. Nor was there any scientific objective to be gained. No, there was deeper reason for wanting to jump, a desire I could not explain.
It was that quality that led me into aviation in the first place — it was a love of the air and sky and flying, the lure of adventure, the appreciation of beauty. It lay beyond the descriptive words of man — where immortality is touched through danger, where life meets death on equal plane; where man is more than man, and existence both supreme and valueless at the same instant.
