PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE:
We have much to celebrate this week, including:
• Our Skunkworks Robotics team whose collective ability to strategize, collaborate with members of their alliance, and support each other through the highs and lows of competition with gracious professionalism led to their victory as a regional finalist on the Olympic Field at the Seattle regional! They ended up with the #1 seed after the qualifications round. During eliminations they owned the field with Team 488 (Franklin High School) for most of the competition while we all held our breath that they would be the overall champions. Such was not to be, but it’s certainly not because of any lack of talent, commitment, or a spectacular robot that resulted in the near loss. In the finals, our alliance lost a best of three final by one point in the third and final match. It could not have been any closer. A special mention needs to be made to our drive team composed of Davis Yoshida, Liam Burke. Reilly Mulligan and Michael Pascua. Thanks to them and the rest of the team, our robot now ranks #3 in the world in point production. Our Skunks are winners in every way—and I hope that you will congratulate the team and Coaches Steele and Wilson for an outstanding showing this past weekend, which also included winning the Industrial Design Award sponsored by General Motors and the Best Website award. Now it is on to the Spokane Regionals over Spring Break. Go Skunks!
• Senior Serena Simkus who was honored last Friday at the UW as a recipient of the National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT) award! Along with a trophy, a gift certificate to Amazon.com and other gifts from Microsoft, Google, HTC, etc. Serena also had the opportunity to tour the Computer Science Education department and interact with women computer scientists. In addition, the school gets a trophy to proudly display! Check it out in the Main Office. Congratulations, Serena!
• Two brothers and AHS scholars—Max and Moritz Wienke, along with two other cadets from the Overlake Composite Squadron 050 competed this past weekend in the Washington Wing Cadet Color Guard Competition, with Moritz being the Color Guard Commander. Weeks of hard work and practice training in the rainy cold weather ultimately paid off with this committed team taking first place! They will now represent the State of WA in the regional competition next month. Congratulations, Max and Moritz! (Look for a picture on the AHS website taken at the outdoor practical event.)
• Pennies for Patients, facilitated by Honor Society, raised $1,406.01 with Mr. McComb’s ($147.71) and Mr. Savishinsky’s ($125.29) classes leading the pack! Kudos to everyone who contributed to this very worth cause!
• New internship opportunities keep presenting themselves, this time at LIGO Hanford Observatory in Richland, Washington! And…our first AHS’ers to experience what it is like to work within this amazing scientific institution will be Lauren Crom and Dustin Werran! Both students took it upon themselves to broach the possibility with Mr. Ingram when they met him at the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) conference in December. From that point forward, discussions have taken place between LIGO, AHS, and the students and their families to make this possible. Congratulations, Lauren and Dustin for your excellent networking skills and landing such a unique resume-building experience! And a message to all other AHS students: Continue checking the NOTAM announcements and conferring with Ms. Burr to gain an internship that builds YOUR resume! Such an experience can be life-changing!

The end of the quarter is March 30, this Friday. Best to everyone with completion of quarter projects and exams! Spring break begins on April 9 with school resuming April 16.

As always, I am honored to be your principal!—Reba G.

This Friday is our all-school field trip to Century Link to cheer for our Skunkworks Robotics team. If you have not yet turned in your permission form, please do so TODAY! And…an important reminder regarding dress code this Friday: No jeans please! Our robotics team is known for their professionalism and wearing khaki pants and team shirts. Last week I was highly impressed with two freshmen on the robotics team who met with me to say how proud they were to be a member of a team that ‘stood out’ at the Portland competition for their professional dress and conduct as well as their technical skills. They personally asked me to ask YOU to show up to this Friday’s competition in a manner that represents their team values. Let’s do so—khakis if you have them and an AHS polo, t-shirt or sweatshirt on top. If you don’t own a pair of khakis, please wear dark colored pants that are not denim. Go Skunks!

AHS Science Olympians— St. Patrick’s Day Results
At Saturday’s regional competition, our three teams distinguished themselves with their outstanding sportsmanship and their achievement. Months of hard work and study paid off in our teams’ participation in over 20 events in every major scientific discipline. Some notable finishes include the following:

• 1st place in Dynamic Planet (Caitlin Schaefer and Mahekdeep Singh)
• 2nd, 3rd, and 7th place in Helicopters (Gordon Salemann, Carlos and Allen, Micheal and Tran Tonnu)
• 2nd and 4th place in Towers (Ellen Jetland and Mahekdeep)
• 3rd place in Anatomy (Danica Balsiger and Cathryn Elliot)
• 3rd place in Optics (Sasha Friedrich and Skye McEowen)
• 3rd place in Thermodynamics (Dustin Werran and Ellen)
• 3rd place in Microbe Mission (Danica and Cathryn)
• 3rd place in Rocks in Minerals (Dustin and Caitlin)
• 4th place in Write It, Do It (Jonah Graves and Hiren Ajudia)
• 4th place in Disease Detectives (Danica and Cathryn)
• 3rd place in Experimental Design (Lauren Crom, Conor Marsten, and Ellen)
• 4th place in Gravity Vehicle (Kishan Vekaria and Carlos)
Aviation High School Black Team came in 4th place overall (one point behind the third-place finisher) and was one of five teams to qualify for State Competition at Eastern Washington University on April 13-14. Our Red and Yellow teams finished within one point of each other as well and placed 8th and 10th, respectively. We salute all of our builders, studiers, and inquirers, and look forward to cheering on our Olympians as they head to State. Congratulations to our amazing coaches— Mr. McComb and Ms. Dyer!

Like many opportunities at AHS and elsewhere, we rely on the support of others who are enthusiastic about our growth and our learning. Thank you to all of our parents and supporters who helped transport, feed, enrich, supervise, organize, and celebrate with us. A special thanks to Judy Mannard (parent of 9th grader Jessica) and Rich Bankhead who served as tournament directors at Highline Community College and made the experience possible.

Our seniors keep getting acceptance letters to the colleges and universities of their choice, which makes us all very proud of them! More than a dozen students were notified last week that they have been admitted to the University of Washington; Jenny Gao has an invitation to MIT and Salina Abraham to Cornell! The media (Seattle Times, Burien blog, KOMO, Highline Times) has been notified that Drew Hidalgo is headed to West Point, too, so keep an eye out for some good PR about this soon-to-be cadet! And seniors, please notify me if you would like to see your name in the NOTAM for admission to your top college of choice!

Congratulations to our ASB for a spirited and fun assembly last Friday! You brought the house down in a very good way! I encourage everyone to buy a ticket to the dance on Saturday evening. It will be a great way to unwind after an action-filled week!

Special kudos to all of our students who took the HSPE exams last week and to Ms. Carper for organizing the testing and related details. You can now breathe a bit until end of course exams in May! Thanks to our amazing parent community, too, for donations of healthy snacks.

More good news regarding internship experiences: Adriana Lopez, Max Wienke, Ellen Jetland and Rocco Buty have been selected for the Blue Angels internship under the direction of lead intern Katie McConville. I encourage everyone to keep checking the announcements in the NOTAM and postings in the Counseling/Career Center and around school to be informed of the spectacular internship opportunities that are available to you! Remember…you’re building your resume. Internships speak volumes about your work ethic and interest in being both college and career ready!

Last week we celebrated our classified employees and I mentioned them by name in the NOTAM. Unfortunately, I didn’t include two important employees—Carla Nakashima and Rose Lucksinger, the two super women who prepare breakfast and lunch for us each day! My apologies, Carla and Rose. You are valued members of the AHS team!

My best for an inspiring week of learning and one more reminder to get your permission forms to Mrs. Hiranaka TODAY! Honored to be your principal—Reba G.

National Honor Society is having their annual Pennies for Patients fundraiser, starting Monday, March 5th and lasting three weeks. Pennies for Patients is a fundraiser that raises money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to help with cancer research. This fundraiser is for a great cause, but it is also a very fun competition. The winning advisory at the end of the three weeks will win a lunch sponsored by Olive Garden. Each advisory has a box in it that you can put money into any time of the day, except the boxes will be collected every day and counted. The same rules apply as last year, meaning that coins will add to your advisories total, while bills will take away from it. So add coins to your advisories box, and put bills in other advisories boxes to help your advisory win! Each teacher will have an update of which advisories are in the lead every day, and there will be an updated sheet outside of the office and in the cafeteria as well. Join NHS in helping to raise money for cancer research, and let's have a fun competition for a lunch sponsored by Olive Garden!

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE:

Hearty congratulations and thanks to the following good people:
• Our classified employees—Ms. Hiranaka, Ms. Suiaunoa, Ms. Sorensen, Mr. Delano, and Mr. Mullis for your stellar work to make AHS a great place to work and learn! This week is Classified Employees Week, but we honor you for the service you provide each and every day! Thank you one and all!
• Honor Society students and Advisor Ward for organizing a very successful Pennies for Patients fundraiser! I’m not sure about the total amount raised so far but I believe it may be a record for AHS. What a marvelous example of caring and citizenship!
• Everyone who helped us interview another 64 students this past Saturday! Special thanks to parents Tamera Nason and Connie Sanders for facilitating the parent orientation, to mentor extraordinaire Mike Borfitz for again leading an interview team, and to AHS alum Natalie Nason for serving on an interview team. We are so fortunate to have such great support from parents who no longer have students at AHS and from others who aren’t at AHS on a daily basis. And…I continue to be impressed with the extraordinary AHS students who commit their time and expertise to help out. We value your input and participation in the process!
• Our Skunkworks Robotics team, their mentors, parents, and supporters returned late Saturday from competition in Portland, Oregon. As many speculated after watching the robot perform on our practice field, it was the star of the show! Our Skunks came home tired but exhilarated as well they should! Coach Steele reported that the team made it all the way to the finals after being the 3rd seed during qualifying but then lost in the finals 2-1. The Skunks were teamed with another Washington team and a team from Hawaii. “The entire team performed extremely well and we were awarded both the best Website award and the Motorola Quality award for our robot. Our record was 13 wins and 4 losses for the weekend. We learned quite a bit and should be even better in Seattle”, stated Coach Steele.

The past week was indeed exciting for our Skunks. They reported to AHS at 5:30 a.m. last Monday where they were filmed by KING TV reporter Christie Johnson for segments that ran throughout the day. If you didn’t get a chance to see them on TV, you can still do so: http://www.king5.com/video/featured-videos/Students-gear-up-for-Seattle-Regional-FIRST-Robotics-Competition-141449723.html

A reminder to all students that the next big event for our Skunks is occurring on March 23 and 24 at Century Link Event Center in downtown Seattle. We will be taking an all-school field trip to watch our Skunks perform on Friday, March 23. Students and parents: Please get your permission forms returned ASAP! Reminder, too, that admission is free both days, so parents and families, you may want to plan a Saturday field trip, too!

Sophomores will be taking the HSPE exams in reading and writing this week. We encourage you to get a good night’s rest and be ready each day to perform at your best! Thanks to parent donations, there will be some nutritious snacks and water to keep you going.

My best for an inspiring week of learning! Honored to be your principal—Reba G.

Teens for Jeans collected 1,020,041 pairs of jeans this year! Aviation High School donated over 100 pairs of jeans with the Junior class wining the spirit competition! A huge thank you to everyone involved. Some fun facts about the campaign:
• 1500 pairs of jeans were donated per hour
• 26 pairs of jeans donated per minute
• 1 pair of jeans donated every 2 seconds
• If folded and stacked, the jeans collected would rise 32 miles, or 6Xs the height of Mount Everest (or 137Xs higher than the Empire State Building)
• 1 in 3 American High Schools participated
• Most importantly: These jeans will clothe 2 out of 3 homeless teens

Interviews for Class of 2016

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE:

Interviewing began last week for next year’s freshman class. Four interview teams led by Mr. Kelly, Ms. Burr/Mr. Borfitz, Ms. Pappas, and me interviewed 64 students on Saturday alone! Mrs. Hiranaka and Mrs. Sanders provided a parent orientation and students Jared Sharp, Melissa Will, and Sophia Casam managed the front office to meet, greet, direct, and monitor. AHS students participating on the interview teams included Lori Baca, Lauren Crom, Austin Fischer, Jacob Wagner, Hiren Ajudia, Raj DeYoung, Jonah Graves, Jocob Hoag, Jennifer Luoma, Austin Spores, Andrew Tabalbag, Alex Wencel, Kris Hartelius, Salina Abraham, Natalie Carmichael, and Robyn Zaches. Thanks to everyone on this amazing team as well as our very talented Office Manager Ms. Suiaunoa who scheduled the interviews and prepared all the files to make our process run smoothly! We’ll be continuing the process for the next three Saturday’s so that we can extend invitations to students in the Class of 2016 by April 1.

Further thanks and congratulations are extended to the following:

The winning advisory at the end of the three weeks will win a lunch sponsored by Olive Garden. Each advisory has a box in it that you can put money into any time of the day, except the boxes will be collected every day and counted.
