Saturday
Pathfinder Gala 5:30 at The Museum of Flight

Message from the Principal:

This week is a busy one at Aviation High School! If you were selected for Pathfinder, please be sure to attend Etiquette Training (ET) this afternoon. Location is the Gymnasium, and we’ll start at 3:45 p.m. and end at approximately 5:30 p.m. Further information about Pathfinder and your “homework” assignments will also be shared this afternoon during ET. Again, my congratulations to everyone who has been selected to attend this year’s prestigious Gala!

On Wednesday, I’ll be traveling to Spokane with six students—Austin McHenry, Sam Swan, Michael Marinkovich, Libanos Redda, Lydia Johnston, and Emily Kelley—to attend the 3rd annual Governor’s Aerospace Summit. In addition to participating in conference sessions to learn about current issues in aviation and aerospace, our student ambassadors will be introduced on stage during the conference and asked to share information about themselves as well as Aviation High School. This opportunity is an example of what makes Aviation High School so unique. Partnerships with aviation and aerospace-related businesses and organizations (and the people within them!) are key to making your learning relevant and exciting. We are grateful to our friend, Linda Lanham, CEO of Aerospace Futures Alliance, for including us in this event.

Wednesday evening is also the Life After High School fair, which I am again encouraging you and your parents to attend. Flyers were mailed to your homes. The event is being held on the Tyee campus within Highline School District.

On Thursday evening, we are expecting to see your parents at our Evening of Learning/Open House. Invitations were mailed home a couple of weeks ago. Please remind your parents to attend, and please remember to give them your class schedule so that they can attend your classes! A schedule form was included within the invitation. As a reminder, our program starts at 6:00 p.m. in the Gym.

And, a gentle reminder: Unless a teacher has asked you to assist in his/her classroom, you should not attend the Open House—not because we don’t love you, but because your parents will be sitting in your seats in classrooms—and as you know, seats are limited!

Special note for parents who want some additional guidance about how to help support their children at AHS: We are hosting a workshop from 5:00 – 5:55 p.m. to provide parents with specific strategies and guidance to help their student(s) at AHS. We will discuss common academic pitfalls and how adults can help their child(ren) avoid them, and we will outline the support systems available at AHS and in Highline School District to access additional help. In my NOTAM message last week, I asked, “What is STEM?” One student responded, “It’s a stalk that supports a beautiful flower.” And, indeed, this student is correct that “stem”, if written in lower case letters could, indeed, be just this! J I was pleased to know that many of you responded that when written in capital letters, STEM most often means Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Our school is one of only a handful of schools in the State and country that are emerging as STEM models of teaching and learning. Our goal is to ensure that you are STEM literate when you graduate high school, along with being grounded in the Humanities. Dr. Bonnie Dunbar, CEO/President of the Museum of Flight, in the September/October issue of Aloft magazine, wrote, “The Museum of Flight, in addition to preserving aerospace history, is part of a national effort to inspire and to excite our youth about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers. Scientists and engineers have made a ‘world of difference’ in aerospace and will continue to shape the future in aviation and space technology. As school starts, I am hopeful that we can encourage more of our children to study STEM subjects—our nation’s future may depend upon it.” I am pleased to report that a survey of students in the Class of 2009 revealed that the majority of our graduates are planning to pursue STEM-related college degrees and careers. There is no doubt whatsoever that our region, State, and nation is counting on your generation to engineer the success of our country within a global economy. The workforce needs your intellectual and technical genius to fulfill the critical gaps in STEM-related fields. Engineering is an example. Last year, our nation’s colleges and universities turned out only about 80,000 engineering grads, but the need for engineers exceeds 1,000,000!

The sky is NOT the limit at Aviation High School…and STEM counts! Please make the word STEM part of your regular vocabulary. You will hear it often. Make the most of your week of learning. Every minute matters! Honored to be your principal… ~ Reba
