PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE:
Our new school at the Museum of Flight is going to be grand! I was in the neighborhood this past weekend so had an opportunity to view the progress, which is spectacular. The curved roof is just the coolest design feature ever and blends so well with the Museum’s architecture. I’m eager to don a hard hat and walk through the building when given permission (probably in June), and I’m even more eager to see it all completed and ready for occupancy in August 2013. When the Museum completes its Westside campus (several years in the future) with expansion of the AirPark to include a 787 Dreamliner and other artifacts not currently displayed, and Raisbeck Aviation HS is book-ended to the south by the amazing Simonyi Space Gallery and surrounded by a space dedicated to sharing the Boeing story, a new theater and archives and possibly even a classy restaurant, it will be an historical day of celebration in Seattle. I am so very proud to be joined with the Museum of Flight and all the fine people associated with it who believe that together we can truly inspire each generation to dream, discover, soar…to believe that the sky is really NOT the limit…and to know that they are the hope for keeping our country safe and strong in a very competitive global market.
Speaking of competitive…Another thing I did this past weekend was stay tuned to the FIRST Robotics World Championships in St. Louis, MO where our Skunks were competing for top awards alongside hundreds of other teams from across the globe. AHS alum Navid Shafa kept me informed for the three days of competition, so I asked him to be a guest writer for this edition of the NOTAM, summarizing the amazing journey of our beloved Skunks: The 400 teams who qualify for World Champs are split up into 4 different fields: Archimedes, Curie, Galileo and Newton. We were on Newton where we were competing with 100 teams on that field. Each field or division is essentially a regional of its own. All four divisions play a total of 150 qualification matches simultaneously and entirely separately. Qualification matches start Thursday and finish Saturday morning. At that point, each division's top 8 teams pick their alliance partners and play to win their division. After each division finishes eliminations, one alliance (of three robots), goes on to compete on the final field "Einstein" to be crowned the World Champions of 2012.
The Skunks went undefeated on Thursday and continued through to lunch on Friday, at which point we were ranked 3rd overall. We had a few tough matches where we knew our chances of winning were slim, but regardless of those defeats we had a great finish. We were clearly a strong robot and we were asked to join an alliance. We won with our alliance in the quarterfinals and broke our personal high-score at 103 points in a match. We played the best we ever have in the final match of the Semis. We did the majority of the scoring and managed a triple balance, losing 121-94. What a way to go!
To put things in perspective, the furthest we have ever been at World Champs before is the Quarter-Finals (once in 2008 and again last year). No matter how strong of a robot you have, or how well you play, there is always a lot of luck riding on every match. All that we can do is build a strong robot and play with it to the best of our ability, and that's what they did this weekend. They continued to build on our team's past successes and have upheld our legacy as a premier team. I am proud to call myself a Skunk Alumn. Congratulations on another great season Skunkworks!"

More good news includes:
• Jenny Gao has been selected by the Washington State Legislature as a Washington Scholar for Legislative District #33. Congratulations, Jenny, on earning this prestigious recognition and on your recent decision to attend Harvard University this fall!
• Rahmo Ali, an AHS junior has been selected to receive one of only 26 Emerging Leader Scholarships sponsored by PEMCO Financial Services and the School Employees Credit Union of Washington. The scholarship covers tuition for Rahmo to attend the Washington State Summer Leadership Camp this summer at either Cispus or Chewelah Peak Learning Center. This program is known as being the premier leadership training program in our state. Hearty congratulations, Rahmo!
• The National Merit Scholarship Program has just announced the names of juniors who took the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) and met requirements to enter the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program. Our AHS scholars are Alex Cail, Christopher Lu, Reilly Mulligan, Morgen Sellier, Kyra Sutherland, and Dustin Werran. Super congratulations to all!
• Students selected to visit Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University June 17-19 are Cynthia Tran, Anthony Ayson, Noah Palmer, Deaundre Cola, Christopher Gregg, Barrett Estep, Austin Coleman, Cassidy Rourke, Jordan Gardner, and Kirsten Noble. Their expressed interests in ERAU’s programs led to their selection. This is an all-expense paid trip, courtesy of ERAU. Enjoy this opportunity, scholars! And for those who were not selected to attend, please know that there will be additional opportunities. Stay tuned to future announcements in the NOTAM.
• Danica Balsinger has been selected as the South King County Chamber of Commerce’s May Student of the Month. Danica will be honored at the Chamber’s May 11 luncheon meeting and will also have the opportunity to compete for a Chamber scholarship award. Congratulations, Danica!
• Last week, our sophomores went on “the coolest field ever”, according to Mr. Savishinsky, and the Phoenix Flyer began its first experiment in live-blogging, all at the same time. We’re all very proud of both accomplishments, so when you have a free moment, go to www.ahsphoenixflyer.com and check out the article titled “Live Blogging the Sophomore Environmental Challenge” to see what’s happening in collaboration with one of our outstanding partners, the Port of Seattle/Sea-Tac International Airport. As Mr. S. further states, “It’s pretty fun stuff! …And of course, browse the newspaper while you’re there.” (FYI: Keep your eyes on the newspaper website for an upcoming profile gallery on the new school construction and a new round of fresh articles.)
Attention Seniors! Again this year, we have amazing sponsorship from service organizations and our friends in aviation and aerospace for a variety of scholarship awards. The scholarship packet will be posted on the AHS website by this Wednesday May 2nd, and a limited number of print copies will be available in the Counseling Center. I encourage you to review the entire packet and apply for all awards that resonate with your goals for college and career. Plan your schedule during these next three weeks to include some essay writing and completion of a general application. Application packets are due to Ms. Carper by Wednesday, May 23rd.

National Honor Society is having their second blood drive of the year on Wednesday May, 23rd. There is a sign-up sheet in the office with permission forms. You must be 16 years or older on the date of the blood drive and must weigh over 110 pounds to give blood. One pint of blood can save up to three lives. Help save lives by signing up to donate blood on May 23rd, and do your part to make a difference.
The Phoenix Flyer is hiring for next year, and we want you! Join us this Thursday, May 3, at lunch in room 21 (Sav) for an informational session on joining the newspaper staff for the 2012-2013 school year. We need writers and editors for all sections and topics, as well as photographers, graphic designers, and technology geeks of all kinds for web design, mobile app design, systems management and more. Anyone interested in joining the Aviation HS chapter of the National Honor Society is welcome to apply. You can locate the application, the criteria for consideration, and specific instructions online in Mr. Ward’s ALL ACCESS folder. The deadline to apply is Friday, May 11.
Aviation High School Students, do you remember the days when your mother/father/guardian would tuck you into bed and read you a story? Or maybe the first book you were able to read all by yourself? I am sure you are all aware that there are children in the greater Seattle area who are not as fortunate as you were to have the time or money to get a hold of these books. Luckily there is something that you can do. For the next few weeks, there will be a large box labeled: “Box for Book Drive” right in front of the Main Office. This is for the purpose of a Children’s Book Drive, conducted by me, Jared Sharp. I know that many (if not most) of you have at least one Children’s book, tucked away somewhere, collecting dust. If everyone can bring at least one book, which I know you can, to school and place it inside the box, each one of you will bring a smile to a child’s face. Of course, if you bring more than one book, you will bring a smile to the faces of multiple children. If you have passed your book down to your aunt and uncle for their growing children, or to your friend for his/her siblings, then that’s totally fine: bring a book that is for older kids as well. All children deserve to have a book in their hands, and it is our job to help them achieve that goal.

The Washington State Board of Education is pleased to announce the start of the third-annual student video contest. This year’s contest will focus on the importance of social studies and language arts courses in high schools. The contest due date is Tuesday, May 1, 2012. This is a great opportunity for all secondary students to showcase their appreciation for social studies and language arts, their creativity, and their video skills. Past participants have found the contest rewarding and educational. Plus, the contest is a celebration of what you and your staff are doing every day, helping students grow and learn. Joan Yarberry Scholarship: Scholarships for college/university tuition for students interested in majoring in elementary education. The number and dollar value of the awards will determined by the selection committee. Applications are available from Ms. Carper. Deadline: May 1.
Highline Council PTSA is awarding $6,000 in scholarships to students attending community college, university, or technical school in fall 2012. Applicants will be evaluated on volunteer work and extracurricular activities, GPA, essays, and a letter of recommendation. Applications are available at www.hcptsa.org. Deadline: May 7.
The Southwest King County Chamber of Commerce’s SUCCESS Foundation is pleased to present the AAAA Mini Storage Scholarship of $4,000 ($1,000 awarded annually over a 4-year period). This scholarship will be awarded to one deserving high school senior from a Chamber service area school (which includes Highline Public Schools, Tukwila School District, and Seattle Christian School) pursuing continuing education at an institute for higher learning in fall 2012. Applications are available in Ms. Carper’s office. Deadline: May 18.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE:
After a long-awaited weekend of spectacular weather, I’m expecting to see sun-kissed faces and renewed energy as we engage in another week of spring learning! I do hope that whatever you experienced over the weekend, at least some of your time was spent in the beautiful outdoors that is uniquely Seattle.
This week, I extend hearty congratulations to the following members of the AHS community:
• Jacob Wagner, AHS Junior who passed his check ride and earned his pilot’s license just after his 17th birthday! Jacob flew in a Diamond DA-20 aircraft owned by Galvin Flying Service at Boeing Field where he took flight lessons. Jacob’s career goal is to be an aeronautical engineer and just fly for fun. With the projected demand for pilots as well as engineers, Jacob is sure to have lots of choices for his future—a great position to enjoy! Congratulations, Captain Wagner!
• Our seniors for presenting their senior projects last week! The anticipation was palpable as students perfected their products and reviewed notes prior to presenting to an AHS staff member and professional industry representative. Look forward to seeing the projects exhibited prior to the end of the year. Kudos, seniors, for your creativity and dedication to extending your learning through development and presentation of your projects!
• Siva Hope and Allison Do who were honored last week at the Museum of Flight as scholarship recipients of the Stephen & Hazel Eastman Scholars Award and Stuart Knopp Memorial Award, respectively. Both young women were honored by family representatives in an informal ceremony as well as formally at the Museum’s Annual Membership Meeting in the Allen Theater in front of an audience of ~250 people. Siva has been accepted to several universities and plans to decide which offer she will accept to pursue further studies in science. Allison has accepted Smith College’s invitation and plans to pursue a degree in Biochemistry and become a research scientist. It was such an honor to see these two outstanding scholars recognized for their achievements last week. Congratulations!
• Anastasia Pallis on her selection as one of eight students throughout the region to represent SEAFAIR this summer as a “Seafair Ambassador”. She will be in a leading role in the Torch Light Parade, the Milk Carton Derby and many other Seafair activities, and along with this honor she receives a $1000 scholarship and a one week trip to Japan!
• Jenny Gao on her selection as the 2012 Asian Pacific Islanders for Professional and Community Advancement (APCA) Scholar. The scholarship award is worth $2000. The scholarship committee noted how very impressed they were with Jenny’s academic, community and personal achievements in making a difference in the community.
• Dr. Katims on his nomination by an AHS graduate who is now attending the University of Washington, as being an inspirational teacher! On May 10th, 2012, the UW Computer Science & Engineering department will recognize teachers, from any discipline, whom their undergraduate students nominated as having been particularly inspirational. An AHS alum wrote the following about Dr. Katims’ impact on her life: “Dr. K absolutely loves teaching and he brings that passion and happiness to his classroom. I made sure to take a class from Dr. K every year of high school because no matter what he taught, I loved it. This is especially impressive to me, because he teaches subjects that I have continually struggled with and disliked in the past. It was only because of Dr. K that I was able to pass AP US History. No other teacher would have ever been able to make such an impact on my learning of a subject like history, where I can barely remember the names of students in my class let alone the names and dates of people dead for a hundred years.”
In the message I received from UW’s Lead Academic Advisor in the Computer Science & Engineering Department regarding Dr. K’s award, she stated, “We know that the tremendous efforts of countless educators help prepare these students for success at the UW, and in their future careers beyond our program. This event is just a small way for us to thank them.” Good on UW for this realization and finding a way to recognize inspirational teachers. I think I know Dr. K well enough to know that he will consider this recognition from a former student as the highest professional honor that he could possibly receive. When you see Dr. Katims this week, please join me in saying “Congratulations!”
• AHS alum Derek Diaz who just landed a summer internship with The Boeing Company! Derek is pursuing a degree in Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Washington.
We have more good news for those of you interested in attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU). Ten AHS students plus a staff chaperone are being offered an opportunity to visit ERAU’s Prescott, Arizona campus June 17-19. ERAU will pay for airfare and house students in their dormitories. The trip will include an opportunity to visit summer classes in session, fly in one of ERAU’s airplanes, and learn about the 38 degree programs offered. So…if you are interested in being selected, do the following:
• Submit an essay to Ms. Burr expressing the reasons why you want to go—degree program you might pursue in the future & your career goal, what you specifically want to learn on your visit, and how you will then be an ambassador in promoting ERAU to other students. If you previously submitted an essay to attend a summer camp, you do not need to write another one; however, you must let Ms. Burr know that you are interested in being part of this 3-day visit in order to be considered. Due date for your essay or notification of interest is this Thursday, April 26 by end of day. We will announce selected students in next week’s NOTAM.

National Honor Society is hosting Cocoa & Cram on Tuesday, April 24, after school in Dr. K's room! Come enjoy some hot chocolate with all the toppings (whipped cream, marshmallows, and candy canes!) and get some studying done with your friends. The hot chocolate is free, but NHS will be accepting donations to help us put on more events like cocoa and cram. The event goes from 3:30 to 5:00 PM so stop by any time for studying and hot chocolate!

UW YoungGifted&Black (YGB) Conference 2012 – Keeping the Dream Alive!
YGB is an important outreach program for African American high school students who are interested in attending college. Connect with prominent people within the UW and Seattle Black community. Participation in this conference will be based on priority and a first come, first served basis. Priority will be given to high school freshman, sophomores, and juniors with above a 3.0 GPA. The application deadline is Friday, April 27, 2012.

Six Interns will be selected to help plan the Pathfinder Gala to be held October 20, 2012. Interns will get to meet the 3 award recipients, work with the Museum of Flight staff and other professionals, and assist with other events leading up to the gala. Advisory Peeps Competition: Attention AHS students it's time to turn up your creativity! This Wednesday during advisory ASB will be hosting the second annual Peeps Competition! Each advisory will be given a box of Peeps and the task of designing a creative and original diorama in 30 minutes. Dioramas will be judged based on originality and how spirited it is! This year’s contest will focus on the importance of social studies and language arts courses in high schools. The contest due date is Tuesday, May 1, 2012. After a long-awaited weekend of spectacular weather, I’m expecting to see sun-kissed faces and renewed energy as we engage in another week of spring learning! I do hope that whatever you experienced over the weekend, at least some of your time was spent in the beautiful outdoors that is uniquely Seattle.
This week, I extend hearty congratulations to the following members of the AHS community:
• Jacob Wagner, AHS Junior who passed his check ride and earned his pilot’s license just after his 17th birthday! Jacob flew in a Diamond DA-20 aircraft owned by Galvin Flying Service at Boeing Field where he took flight lessons. Jacob’s career goal is to be an aeronautical engineer and just fly for fun. With the projected demand for pilots as well as engineers, Jacob is sure to have lots of choices for his future—a great position to enjoy! Congratulations, Captain Wagner!
• Our seniors for presenting their senior projects last week! The anticipation was palpable as students perfected their products and reviewed notes prior to presenting to an AHS staff member and professional industry representative. Look forward to seeing the projects exhibited prior to the end of the year. Kudos, seniors, for your creativity and dedication to extending your learning through development and presentation of your projects!
• Siva Hope and Allison Do who were honored last week at the Museum of Flight as scholarship recipients of the Stephen & Hazel Eastman Scholars Award and Stuart Knopp Memorial Award, respectively. Both young women were honored by family representatives in an informal ceremony as well as formally at the Museum’s Annual Membership Meeting in the Allen Theater in front of an audience of ~250 people. Siva has been accepted to several universities and plans to decide which offer she will accept to pursue further studies in science. Allison has accepted Smith College’s invitation and plans to pursue a degree in Biochemistry and become a research scientist. It was such an honor to see these two outstanding scholars recognized for their achievements last week. Congratulations!
• Anastasia Pallis on her selection as one of eight students throughout the region to represent SEAFAIR this summer as a “Seafair Ambassador”. She will be in a leading role in the Torch Light Parade, the Milk Carton Derby and many other Seafair activities, and along with this honor she receives a $1000 scholarship and a one week trip to Japan!
• Jenny Gao on her selection as the 2012 Asian Pacific Islanders for Professional and Community Advancement (APCA) Scholar. The scholarship award is worth $2000. The scholarship committee noted how very impressed they were with Jenny’s academic, community and personal achievements in making a difference in the community.
• Dr. Katims on his nomination by an AHS graduate who is now attending the University of Washington, as being an inspirational teacher! On May 10th, 2012, the UW Computer Science & Engineering department will recognize teachers, from any discipline, whom their undergraduate students nominated as having been particularly inspirational. An AHS alum wrote the following about Dr. Katims’ impact on her life: “Dr. K absolutely loves teaching and he brings that passion and happiness to his classroom. I made sure to take a class from Dr. K every year of high school because no matter what he taught, I loved it. This is especially impressive to me, because he teaches subjects that I have continually struggled with and disliked in the past. It was only because of Dr. K that I was able to pass AP US History. No other teacher would have ever been able to make such an impact on my learning of a subject like history, where I can barely remember the names of students in my class let alone the names and dates of people dead for a hundred years.”
In the message I received from UW’s Lead Academic Advisor in the Computer Science & Engineering Department regarding Dr. K’s award, she stated, “We know that the tremendous efforts of countless educators help prepare these students for success at the UW, and in their future careers beyond our program. This event is just a small way for us to thank them.” Good on UW for this realization and finding a way to recognize inspirational teachers. I think I know Dr. K well enough to know that he will consider this recognition from a former student as the highest professional honor that he could possibly receive. When you see Dr. Katims this week, please join me in saying “Congratulations!”
• AHS alum Derek Diaz who just landed a summer internship with The Boeing Company! Derek is pursuing a degree in Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Washington.
We have more good news for those of you interested in attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU). Ten AHS students plus a staff chaperone are being offered an opportunity to visit ERAU’s Prescott, Arizona campus June 17-19. ERAU will pay for airfare and house students in their dormitories. The trip will include an opportunity to visit summer classes in session, fly in one of ERAU’s airplanes, and learn about the 38 degree programs offered. So…if you are interested in being selected, do the following:
• Submit an essay to Ms. Burr expressing the reasons why you want to go—degree program you might pursue in the future & your career goal, what you specifically want to learn on your visit, and how you will then be an ambassador in promoting ERAU to other students. If you previously submitted an essay to attend a summer camp, you do not need to write another one; however, you must let Ms. Burr know that you are interested in being part of this 3-day visit in order to be considered. Due date for your essay or notification of interest is this Thursday, April 26 by end of day. We will announce selected students in next week’s NOTAM.

National Honor Society is hosting Cocoa & Cram on Tuesday, April 24, after school in Dr. K's room! Aviation High School Students, do you remember the days when your mother/father/guardian would tuck you into bed and read you a story? Or maybe the first book you were able to read all by yourself? I am sure you are all aware that there are children in the greater Seattle area who are not as fortunate as you were to have the time or money to get a hold of these books. Luckily there is something that you can do. For the next few weeks, there will be a large box labeled: “Box for Book Drive” right in front of the Main Office. This is for the purpose of a Children’s Book Drive, conducted by me, Jared Sharp. I know that many (if not most) of you have at least one Children’s book, tucked away somewhere, collecting dust. If everyone can bring at least one book, which I know you can, to school and place it inside the box, each one of you will bring a smile to a child’s face. Of course, if you bring more than one book, you will bring a smile to the faces of multiple children. If you have passed your book down to your aunt and uncle for their growing children, or to your friend for his/her siblings, then that’s totally fine: bring a book that is for older kids as well. All children deserve to have a book in their hands, and it is our job to help them achieve that goal.

Welcome back, Scholars! Hopefully, your spring break was wonderful and you’re now ready to head for the finish line of the 2011-2012 school year. With only 8 weeks left, there’s much to do and learn. Let’s make every day count!
Good news abounds this week! Congratulations to the following:
• Our mighty Skunkworks Robotics Team! They competed last week in Spokane, and won the regional championship! In addition to first place, Sydney Miller received the Dean’s Award and will now compete for the national award; the team won the Website Award; and the highest honor—the Chairman’s Award—also went to our Skunks! The team double-qualified for the World Championships in St. Louis and brought home two more blue banners, adding to the four that were earned in previous years. Six banners in six years—an amazing record! Go Skunks! We are proud of you and grateful for the excellent guidance provided by Coaches Steele and Wilson and the many mentors and parents!
• Our astonishing Science Olympiad Team! Last weekend, 17 of our Olympians traveled to Eastern Washington University in Cheney, WA to participate in the elite State competition. Their hard work and adaptability paid off, resulting in a 9th place overall finish in a very tight field; our team was just three points out of 8th place and six points out of 7th! We are proud of the entire team and salute their persistence and performance. Some notable finishes include the following:
• In Chem Lab, Jenny Gao and Michael Phuong demonstrated their knowledge of chemistry and analyzed chemistry-related process; they placed 2nd overall.
• In Experimental Design, Conor Marsten, Ellen Jetland, and Lauren Crom conceived, designed, conducted, analyzed, and reported on an experiment and placed 5th.
• In Forensics, Salina Abraham and Jenny Gao analyzed forensics evidence and drew conclusions, placing 1st.
• In Microbe Mission, Danica Balsiger and Michael Phuong demonstrated their knowledge of the microscopic world, placing 5th.
• In Robot Arm, Carlos Herrera and Allen May designed, built, tested, and refined an operator-controlled robot arm to complete tasks and placed 5th.
• In Towers, Mahekdeep Singh and Ellen Jetland designed and built a balsa-wood tower that held over 1000 times its own weight, earning 5th.
• In MagLev Vehicle, Jonah Graves and Rocco Buty designed and built a magnetically-levitating vehicle to run down a track and placed 6th.
A special thanks to Mr. McComb and Ms. Weeks for serving as inspiration to the team and as chaperones for the trip.
• Austin McHenry for earning the honor of being the keynote speaker at the Boys & Girls Club of King County’s Annual Kids Breakfast! Austin was asked to give an inspiring speech that would help the club reach their fundraising goal of $550,000. No pressure…he just happened to be the first youth ever asked to speak in front of 1,000 people to do the “big ask!” If you know Austin, it may come as no surprise that his ask raised over $450,000! Incidentally, he also earned the nickname “Awesome McHenry.” Congratulations to our Awesome Austin for his volunteerism to help young people in King County better their lives!
• Katie McConville, Drew Wall, Hunter McSwain, Jon Abramson, Molly Walsh, and Jake Hecla on their selection as summer interns for Arkyd Astronautics, a new space development company in Bellevue!

• AHS graduate Keiko Hiranaka, Class of 2008, on her selection for a fellowship through the Knowles Science Teaching Foundation. Keiko will graduate this spring from Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California with a degree in mathematics and computer science. She will now learn the art and science of teaching through the Knowles program…and, hopefully, someday she will be teaching at Aviation High School!

Enter to Display Your Artwork! Every year, Members of Congress are allowed to display one piece of artwork by a high school student from their district in the U.S. Capitol for one year. Congressman Adam Smith holds an annual judged art competition to select which art from the 9th Congressional District receives this honor. In order to reduce out of pocket expenses for students, entries are not required to be framed, only matted. Each student is limited to one submission. Work must be original in concept. Copies of copyrighted work will not be accepted. Students who apply must submit their entry with two copies of a completed release form. Welcome back, Scholars! Hopefully, your spring break was wonderful and you’re now ready to head for the finish line of the 2011-2012 school year. With only 8 weeks left, there’s much to do and learn. Let’s make every day count!
Good news abounds this week! Congratulations to the following:
• Our mighty Skunkworks Robotics Team! They competed last week in Spokane, and won the regional championship! In addition to first place, Sydney Miller received the Dean’s Award and will now compete for the national award; the team won the Website Award; and the highest honor—the Chairman’s Award—also went to our Skunks! The team double-qualified for the World Championships in St. Louis and brought home two more blue banners, adding to the four that were earned in previous years. Six banners in six years—an amazing record! Go Skunks! We are proud of you and grateful for the excellent guidance provided by Coaches Steele and Wilson and the many mentors and parents!
• Our astonishing Science Olympiad Team! Last weekend, 17 of our Olympians traveled to Eastern Washington University in Cheney, WA to participate in the elite State competition. Their hard work and adaptability paid off, resulting in a 9th place overall finish in a very tight field; our team was just three points out of 8th place and six points out of 7th! We are proud of the entire team and salute their persistence and performance. Some notable finishes include the following:
• In Chem Lab, Jenny Gao and Michael Phuong demonstrated their knowledge of chemistry and analyzed chemistry-related process; they placed 2nd overall.
• In Experimental Design, Conor Marsten, Ellen Jetland, and Lauren Crom conceived, designed, conducted, analyzed, and reported on an experiment and placed 5th.
• In Forensics, Salina Abraham and Jenny Gao analyzed forensics evidence and drew conclusions, placing 1st.
• In Microbe Mission, Danica Balsiger and Michael Phuong demonstrated their knowledge of the microscopic world, placing 5th.
• In Robot Arm, Carlos Herrera and Allen May designed, built, tested, and refined an operator-controlled robot arm to complete tasks and placed 5th.
• In Towers, Mahekdeep Singh and Ellen Jetland designed and built a balsa-wood tower that held over 1000 times its own weight, earning 5th.
• In MagLev Vehicle, Jonah Graves and Rocco Buty designed and built a magnetically-levitating vehicle to run down a track and placed 6th.
A special thanks to Mr. McComb and Ms. Weeks for serving as inspiration to the team and as chaperones for the trip.
• Austin McHenry for earning the honor of being the keynote speaker at the Boys & Girls Club of King County’s Annual Kids Breakfast! Austin was asked to give an inspiring speech that would help the club reach their fundraising goal of $550,000. No pressure…he just happened to be the first youth ever asked to speak in front of 1,000 people to do the “big ask!” If you know Austin, it may come as no surprise that his ask raised over $450,000! Incidentally, he also earned the nickname “Awesome McHenry.” Congratulations to our Awesome Austin for his volunteerism to help young people in King County better their lives!
• Katie McConville, Drew Wall, Hunter McSwain, Jon Abramson, Molly Walsh, and Jake Hecla on their selection as summer interns for Arkyd Astronautics, a new space development company in Bellevue!
• Jacob Wagner and Alex Wencel on their selection for a summer internship at Clay Lacy Flight Service at Boeing Field!
• Embry-Riddle Summer Campers! Participating in the Global Security & Intelligence Spy Camp will be Gabby Rivera, Tyler Christopher, Abby Jarve, Kevin Diego, and Olivia Ochnik. • AHS graduate Keiko Hiranaka, Class of 2008, on her selection for a fellowship through the Knowles Science Teaching Foundation. Keiko will graduate this spring from Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California with a degree in mathematics and computer science. She will now learn the art and science of teaching through the Knowles program…and, hopefully, someday she will be teaching at Aviation High School!
Seniors and ACE Club Students, we have now confirmed that the delivery flight, sponsored by Alaska Airlines and The Boeing Company, is scheduled for May 22nd. Information will be gathered from you for a manifest that must be submitted prior to our flight. Permission forms will be distributed to you within the week. UW YoungGifted&Black (YGB) Conference 2012 – Keeping the Dream Alive!
YGB is an important outreach program for African American high school students who are interested in attending college. Connect with prominent people within the UW and Seattle Black community. With third quarter now behind us, we are on the home stretch toward a successful completion of the school year. Teachers will submit grades this week, and progress reports will then be mailed home. • An awesome Summer of 2012 learning experience is being offered to 10 AHS students (next year’s sophomores, juniors, or seniors), courtesy of James & Sherry Raisbeck. Their foundation has committed $1,000,000 to AHS over the next several years to enhance college and career awareness and preparation that lead to post-secondary admission, earning of a STEM degree, and entry into a high demand field such as engineering. The Raisbecks are offering AHS students the opportunity to learn more about aviation/aerospace-related degree programs at three universities they have chosen to support—Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Purdue, and University of Washington. As a first step, the Raisbecks are sponsoring a tuition-free summer camp experience at Embry Riddle in Prescott, Arizona. Ten AHS students will be selected to attend one of the following camps:
Computer/Electrical Engineering. Students will specify, design, build and fly a high-altitude balloon to collect data. The course is open to high school students ages 16-18 with a strong background in math and science. Ideally, students should complete Algebra II and Physics before enrolling in this camp experience. Exceptions to age and academic requirements can be made based on Aviation High School teacher recommendations. The program runs June 24-29. Tuition is $1,050, which includes room and board. Tuition and travel costs will be covered for AHS participants.
Global Security and Intelligence “Spy” Camp. Participants will take on the role of “spy-catcher” while developing surveillance skills and exploring the practice of cryptology and the art of illusion. The course is open to high school students ages 15-18 who are U.S. citizens. The program runs July 15-20. Tuition is $1,050.00 and includes room and board. Tuition & travel costs will be covered for AHS participants.

ASB Executive Elections: On April 17th Jenny Gao will be holding an information meeting for anyone who is interested in being an executive member of ASB. Applications will be due a week after the meeting and review of the applications will be in progress. Once all applications have been reviewed and approved, candidates will be given a week to campaign and deliver an all-school speech. Following the all school speech, students will vote on their new ASB officers.
Peeps Games: ASB will be hosting its third advisory competition during Easter Week. In this competition, students will be given the task of designing a scene made from marshmallow peeps. Each design will be judge by AHS staff based on several components such as creativity, usage of material, or connection to aviation.

Congressman Adam Smith holds an annual judged art competition to select which art from the 9th Congressional District receives this honor. In order to reduce out of pocket expenses for students, entries are not required to be framed, only matted. Each student is limited to one submission. Work must be original in concept. Copies of copyrighted work will not be accepted. Students who apply must submit their entry with two copies of a completed release form. The Eastside Republican Club will award a $1,000 scholarship to the author of the best essay, as determined by the Club’s judges, submitted on the topic “Why do free markets work? Students must live in King County, or attend a public, private, or home school located in King County. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE:
We have much to celebrate this week, including:
• Our Skunkworks Robotics team whose collective ability to strategize, collaborate with members of their alliance, and support each other through the highs and lows of competition with gracious professionalism led to their victory as a regional finalist on the Olympic Field at the Seattle regional! They ended up with the #1 seed after the qualifications round. During eliminations they owned the field with Team 488 (Franklin High School) for most of the competition while we all held our breath that they would be the overall champions. Such was not to be, but it’s certainly not because of any lack of talent, commitment, or a spectacular robot that resulted in the near loss. In the finals, our alliance lost a best of three final by one point in the third and final match. It could not have been any closer. A special mention needs to be made to our drive team composed of Davis Yoshida, Liam Burke. Reilly Mulligan and Michael Pascua. Thanks to them and the rest of the team, our robot now ranks #3 in the world in point production. Our Skunks are winners in every way—and I hope that you will congratulate the team and Coaches Steele and Wilson for an outstanding showing this past weekend, which also included winning the Industrial Design Award sponsored by General Motors and the Best Website award. Now it is on to the Spokane Regionals over Spring Break. Go Skunks!
• Senior Serena Simkus who was honored last Friday at the UW as a recipient of the National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT) award! Along with a trophy, a gift certificate to Amazon.com and other gifts from Microsoft, Google, HTC, etc. Serena also had the opportunity to tour the Computer Science Education department and interact with women computer scientists. In addition, the school gets a trophy to proudly display! Check it out in the Main Office. Congratulations, Serena!
• Two brothers and AHS scholars—Max and Moritz Wienke, along with two other cadets from the Overlake Composite Squadron 050 competed this past weekend in the Washington Wing Cadet Color Guard Competition, with Moritz being the Color Guard Commander. Weeks of hard work and practice training in the rainy cold weather ultimately paid off with this committed team taking first place! They will now represent the State of WA in the regional competition next month. Congratulations, Max and Moritz! (Look for a picture on the AHS website taken at the outdoor practical event.)
• Pennies for Patients, facilitated by Honor Society, raised $1,406.01 with Mr. McComb’s ($147.71) and Mr. Savishinsky’s ($125.29) classes leading the pack! Kudos to everyone who contributed to this very worth cause!
• New internship opportunities keep presenting themselves, this time at LIGO Hanford Observatory in Richland, Washington! And…our first AHS’ers to experience what it is like to work within this amazing scientific institution will be Lauren Crom and Dustin Werran! Both students took it upon themselves to broach the possibility with Mr. Ingram when they met him at the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) conference in December. From that point forward, discussions have taken place between LIGO, AHS, and the students and their families to make this possible. Congratulations, Lauren and Dustin for your excellent networking skills and landing such a unique resume-building experience! And a message to all other AHS students: Continue checking the NOTAM announcements and conferring with Ms. Burr to gain an internship that builds YOUR resume! Such an experience can be life-changing!

We have a total of 30 contestants who are ready to display their hidden talents, charming personalities, and amazing fashion styles. Mr. Aviation will be held on THIS FRIDAY, March 30th from 6-8 pm in the gymnasium. Tickets are $5 for everyone and children 10 years old and under are free. In the spirit of March: the AHS Black Student Union would like to host a basketball tournament open to anyone in the school wanting to participate. Students must put their names on the sign-up sheet in the office and gather a group of friends to make a team. Every team must have one girl. Once your team is ready, submit the team roster to the office. The tournament will be held near the end of March.
For all those students who love music, film, and having a good time: the AHS Film Club is hosting a MUSIC VIDEO CONTEST in the month of March. Videos must be submitted to Kevin Schilling, Dustin Abrahamson, Mr. Savishinsky, or to the specially marked drop in box in room 21 before spring break. Videos will be judged in one of two categories by a panel of judges: Best Original Song or Best Adapted Music Video. Videos will be shown in an after school premiere that is free to anyone who wants to go. Be creative! There are pretty much no requirements for your films.

Enter to Display Your Artwork! Every year, Members of Congress are allowed to display one piece of artwork by a high school student from their district in the U.S. Capitol for one year. Congressman Adam Smith holds an annual judged art competition to select which art from the 9th Congressional District receives this honor. In order to reduce out of pocket expenses for students, entries are not required to be framed, only matted. Each student is limited to one submission. Work must be original in concept. Copies of copyrighted work will not be accepted. Students who apply must submit their entry with two copies of a completed release form. There will be a senior meeting regarding graduation on Wednesday, April 4, during advisory. We will be voting for speakers at this meeting. If you want to speak at graduation feel free to informally campaign – let your fellow students know so that they can vote for you. Running start students: if you cannot attend, please email me so that I can send you information.
Jostens will be here during lunch on Monday, April 23, to deliver graduation gowns and announcements.

We have a total of 30 contestants who are ready to display their hidden talents, charming personalities, and amazing fashion styles. Mr. Aviation will be held on THIS FRIDAY, March 30th from 6-8 pm in the gymnasium. Tickets are $5 for everyone and children 10 years old and under are free. We are inviting all students, staff, and friends/family members. It's going to be a great show and we hope to see everyone there!

In the spirit of March: the AHS Black Student Union would like to host a basketball tournament open to anyone in the school wanting to participate. Students must put their names on the sign-up sheet in the office and gather a group of friends to make a team. Every team must have one girl. Once your team is ready, submit the team roster to the office. The tournament will be held near the end of March.
For all those students who love music, film, and having a good time: the AHS Film Club is hosting a MUSIC VIDEO CONTEST in the month of March. Videos must be submitted to Kevin Schilling, Dustin Abrahamson, Mr. Savishinsky, or to the specially marked drop in box in room 21 before spring break. Videos will be judged in one of two categories by a panel of judges: Best Original Song or Best Adapted Music Video. Videos will be shown in an after school premiere that is free to anyone who wants to go. Be creative! There are pretty much no requirements for your films.

Enter to Display Your Artwork! Every year, Members of Congress are allowed to display one piece of artwork by a high school student from their district in the U.S. Capitol for one year. Congressman Adam Smith holds an annual judged art competition to select which art from the 9th Congressional District receives this honor. In order to reduce out of pocket expenses for students, entries are not required to be framed, only matted. Each student is limited to one submission. Work must be original in concept. Copies of copyrighted work will not be accepted. Students who apply must submit their entry with two copies of a completed release form. The Eastside Republican Club will award a $1,000 scholarship to the author of the best essay, as determined by the Club’s judges, submitted on the topic “Why do free markets work? What should the President do to spur economic growth?” The scholarship program is open to high school students graduating in 2012, and freshmen and sophomores in an accredited college or university. Students must live in King County, or attend a public, private, or home school located in King County. Essays must be no more than 500 words in length, and must be submitted to the Club by email no later than Monday, April 16. This Friday is our all-school field trip to Century Link to cheer for our Skunkworks Robotics team. If you have not yet turned in your permission form, please do so TODAY! And…an important reminder regarding dress code this Friday: No jeans please! Our robotics team is known for their professionalism and wearing khaki pants and team shirts. Last week I was highly impressed with two freshmen on the robotics team who met with me to say how proud they were to be a member of a team that ‘stood out’ at the Portland competition for their professional dress and conduct as well as their technical skills. They personally asked me to ask YOU to show up to this Friday’s competition in a manner that represents their team values. Let’s do so—khakis if you have them and an AHS polo, t-shirt or sweatshirt on top. If you don’t own a pair of khakis, please wear dark colored pants that are not denim. Go Skunks!

We salute all of our builders, studiers, and inquirers, and look forward to cheering on our Olympians as they head to State. Congratulations to our amazing coaches— Mr. McComb and Ms. Dyer!
Like many opportunities at AHS and elsewhere, we rely on the support of others who are enthusiastic about our growth and our learning. Thank you to all of our parents and supporters who helped transport, feed, enrich, supervise, organize, and celebrate with us. A special thanks to Judy Mannard (parent of 9th grader Jessica) and Rich Bankhead who served as tournament directors at Highline Community College and made the experience possible.
Our seniors keep getting acceptance letters to the colleges and universities of their choice, which makes us all very proud of them! More than a dozen students were notified last week that they have been admitted to the University of Washington; Jenny Gao has an invitation to MIT and Salina Abraham to Cornell! The media (Seattle Times, Burien blog, KOMO, Highline Times) has been notified that Drew Hidalgo is headed to West Point, too, so keep an eye out for some good PR about this soon-to-be cadet! And seniors, please notify me if you would like to see your name in the NOTAM for admission to your top college of choice!
Congratulations to our ASB for a spirited and fun assembly last Friday! You brought the house down in a very good way! I encourage everyone to buy a ticket to the dance on Saturday evening. It will be a great way to unwind after an action-filled week!
Special kudos to all of our students who took the HSPE exams last week and to Ms. Carper for organizing the testing and related details. You can now breathe a bit until end of course exams in May! Thanks to our amazing parent community, too, for donations of healthy snacks.

National Honor Society is having their annual Pennies for Patients fundraiser, starting Monday, March 5th and lasting three weeks. Pennies for Patients is a fundraiser that raises money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to help with cancer research. This fundraiser is for a great cause, but it is also a very fun competition. The winning advisory at the end of the three weeks will win a lunch sponsored by Olive Garden. Each advisory has a box in it that you can put money into any time of the day, except the boxes will be collected every day and counted. The same rules apply as last year, meaning that coins will add to your advisories total, while bills will take away from it. So add coins to your advisories box, and put bills in other advisories boxes to help your advisory win! Each teacher will have an update of which advisories are in the lead every day, and there will be an updated sheet outside of the office and in the cafeteria as well. The Washington State Board of Education is pleased to announce the start of the third-annual student video contest. This year’s contest will focus on the importance of social studies and language arts courses in high schools. The contest due date is Tuesday, May 1, 2012. This is a great opportunity for all secondary students to showcase their appreciation for social studies and language arts, their creativity, and their video skills. Past participants have found the contest rewarding and educational. Plus, the contest is a celebration of what you and your staff are doing every day, helping students grow and learn. Museum of Flight Climate Day Event: The Museum of Flight (MoF) is looking for students interested in the Climate Day event scheduled for Thursday, April 5th 5-9pm. It is going to be similar to the museum’s Space Day and Astronomy Night. The event is about climate change in general, the science behind it, research, solutions, conservation, energy efficiency, renewable energies, etc. MoF is looking for volunteers to host a booth, in particular, people working with green technology (renewable energy, alternative energy, reducing carbon emissions, studying climate change, etc.). AHS students working on related concepts are encouraged to step forward and relay interest to Mr. Kelly. Tacoma International Airport (STIA) Scholarship - Application deadline is Friday, March 23, 2012: each year, the Highline Schools Foundation works with the Port of Seattle to offer the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (STIA) Scholarship to graduating seniors. These are needs-based scholarships awarded to three students who are pursuing a college education. Two $14,000 scholarships will be awarded toward a university/college education and one $8,000 scholarship will be awarded toward a vocational or community college education. All scholarships are distributed over a two-year period. Priority is given to students who have not received a substantial scholarship from other entities. The application is available online:

This Friday is our all-school field trip to Century Link to cheer for our Skunkworks Robotics team. If you have not yet turned in your permission form, please do so TODAY! And…an important reminder regarding dress code this Friday: No jeans please! Our robotics team is known for their professionalism and wearing khaki pants and team shirts. Last week I was highly impressed with two freshmen on the robotics team who met with me to say how proud they were to be a member of a team that ‘stood out’ at the Portland competition for their professional dress and conduct as well as their technical skills. They personally asked me to ask YOU to show up to this Friday’s competition in a manner that represents their team values. Let’s do so—khakis if you have them and an AHS polo, t-shirt or sweatshirt on top. If you don’t own a pair of khakis, please wear dark colored pants that are not denim. Go Skunks!

At Saturday’s regional competition, our three teams distinguished themselves with their outstanding sportsmanship and their achievement. Aviation High School Black Team came in 4th place overall (one point behind the third-place finisher) and was one of five teams to qualify for State Competition at Eastern Washington University on April 13-14. Our Red and Yellow teams finished within one point of each other as well and placed 8th and 10th, respectively. We salute all of our builders, studiers, and inquirers, and look forward to cheering on our Olympians as they head to State. Congratulations to our amazing coaches— Mr. McComb and Ms. Dyer!
Like many opportunities at AHS and elsewhere, we rely on the support of others who are enthusiastic about our growth and our learning. Thank you to all of our parents and supporters who helped transport, feed, enrich, supervise, organize, and celebrate with us. A special thanks to Judy Mannard (parent of 9th grader Jessica) and Rich Bankhead who served as tournament directors at Highline Community College and made the experience possible.
Our seniors keep getting acceptance letters to the colleges and universities of their choice, which makes us all very proud of them! More than a dozen students were notified last week that they have been admitted to the University of Washington; Jenny Gao has an invitation to MIT and Salina Abraham to Cornell! The media (Seattle Times, Burien blog, KOMO, Highline Times) has been notified that Drew Hidalgo is headed to West Point, too, so keep an eye out for some good PR about this soon-to-be cadet! And seniors, please notify me if you would like to see your name in the NOTAM for admission to your top college of choice!
Congratulations to our ASB for a spirited and fun assembly last Friday! You brought the house down in a very good way! I encourage everyone to buy a ticket to the dance on Saturday evening. It will be a great way to unwind after an action-filled week!
Special kudos to all of our students who took the HSPE exams last week and to Ms. Carper for organizing the testing and related details. You can now breathe a bit until end of course exams in May! Thanks to our amazing parent community, too, for donations of healthy snacks.

I encourage everyone to keep checking the announcements in the NOTAM and postings in the Counseling/Career Center and around school to be informed of the spectacular internship opportunities that are available to you! In the spirit of March: the AHS Black Student Union would like to host a basketball tournament open to anyone in the school wanting to participate. Students must put their names on the sign-up sheet in the office and gather a group of friends to make a team. Every team must have one girl. Once your team is ready, submit the team roster to the office. The tournament will be held near the end of March.
For all those students who love music, film, and having a good time: the AHS Film Club is hosting a MUSIC VIDEO CONTEST in the month of March. Videos must be submitted to Kevin Schilling, Dustin Abrahamson, Mr. Savishinsky, or to the specially marked drop in box in room 21 before spring break. Videos will be judged in one of two categories by a panel of judges: Best Original Song or Best Adapted Music Video. Videos will be shown in an after school premiere that is free to anyone who wants to go. Be creative! There are pretty much no requirements for your films.

Congressional Nomination to one of the U.S. Service Academies Info Meeting: Congressman Adam Smith’s office is hosting and information session about what students need to know to receive a nomination to: Military at West Point, Air Force, Naval, Merchant Marine & Coast Guard Academies. It is open to students who reside in the 9th congressional district. Date is April 10th from 6:30-8:30pm at Columbia Junior High in Fife.
Enter to Display Your Artwork! Every year, Members of Congress are allowed to display one piece of artwork by a high school student from their district in the U.S. Capitol for one year. Congressman Adam Smith holds an annual judged art competition to select which art from the 9th Congressional District receives this honor. In order to reduce out of pocket expenses for students, entries are not required to be framed, only matted. Each student is limited to one submission. Work must be original in concept. Copies of copyrighted work will not be accepted. Students who apply must submit their entry with two copies of a completed release form. Tacoma International Airport (STIA) Scholarship - Application deadline is Friday, March 23, 2012: each year, the Highline Schools Foundation works with the Port of Seattle to offer the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (STIA) Scholarship to graduating seniors. These are needs-based scholarships awarded to three students who are pursuing a college education. Two $14,000 scholarships will be awarded toward a university/college education and one $8,000 scholarship will be awarded toward a vocational or community college education. All scholarships are distributed over a two-year period. Priority is given to students who have not received a substantial scholarship from other entities. The application is available online:
