PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE:
Hearty congratulations to everyone who ran for an ASB office! Your campaigns were spirited and reflected the commitment you have to serving AHS in a leadership capacity. I hope that all of you will get behind your newly elected officer team of Tran Tonnu, President; Royce Le, Vice President; Rangsey Touch, Secretary; and Katie McConville, Treasurer. Congratulations, team!

Students in Ms. Wombold’s Current World Problems class this year were given the opportunity to participate in the Games Without Borders Youth Challenge hosted by the World Affairs Council of Seattle, Washington. Three student groups researched world problems and created games designed to raise awareness of a global issue, including topics such as nuclear weapons, and the role of microloans in addressing poverty. Just last week we received word that Sopheaktra Danh and Melody Northcutt’s game design, “Syria at Risk,” in which they illustrated the strategic nature of internal civil unrest and government control, was selected by a judging panel as one of the top winners in the high school division! Congratulations to both students on such an outstanding accomplishment. More information about the challenge can be found here: http://www.world-affairs.org/programs/global-classroom/games-without-borders-youth-challenge/

Congrats to the junior class for sponsoring a wonderful prom for our seniors this past weekend. By all accounts, it was a spectacular evening for everyone in attendance. Congratulations to Prom King-Dustin Abrahamson and Prom Queen-Kelli Katzer, Prom Prince-Kris Hartelius, and Prom Princess-Adrianna Lopez on their royal rein of the evening, too. Sincere thanks to Ms. Fitz, Mr. Shiroma, Ms. Wombold, Mr. Edgerton, Mr. and Mrs. Hiranaka, Mr. Joshi, Ms. Carper, Ms. Lee, Dr. and Mrs. Katims, and Mr. Kelly, for chaperoning, too!

Tuesday morning will be the last Mentor Breakfast Meeting of the school year. These events have become so inspiring over the years that I can’t imagine a mentor or mentee wanting to miss one! I look forward to seeing folks in the Gymnasium at 7:30 a.m. for the finale of the year. Thank you, Ms. Burr and Ms. Pappas for your work to ensure that students are prepared for both college and career. Special thanks, too, to the 150+ mentors who so believe in the mission and vision of AHS and the importance of sharing their wisdom and time with their mentees! You are changing lives through your volunteerism!

Tuesday is also the day that our seniors and ACE club members will enjoy flying the friendly skies on a brand new B-737 that Alaska Airlines is taking into their fleet! If you have turned in your permission form to participate in this exciting field trip, please report to the Gymnasium immediately AFTER YOUR FIRST PERIOD Class! This is a slight change in schedule (originally, we were going to be security checked at 9:00 a.m.), so please take note and be in the Gym by 10:00 a.m. sharp WITH your photo ID! Students with inhalers and EipPens MUST self-carry your meds! Later today (Monday), we will post a list of chaperones and assigned students on the windows of the Main Office. Please check this list BEFORE Tuesday morning so that you can gather with your chaperone in the gym and board the buses with him/her.

As we move closer to the end of the school year, remember:
• The Senior Awards Ceremony will be held from 1:30-4:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 3rd at the Boeing Theater on E. Marginal Way. Invitations were mailed to seniors and parents and included directions and parking information. If you need another copy, please see Pamela in the Main Office. And seniors: Please report to Mrs. Hiranaka ASAP all scholarships received, including grants and awards from your specific college.
• Our All-School Awards Ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, June 5 at the Performing Arts Center adjacent to Highline High School in Burien. You will report to your first period class for attendance, then immediately board school buses that will transport us to the PAC. Parents and families: Please join us if your schedule permits! The program will begin at 9:30 a.m. and conclude at 11:30 a.m. When we return to school, a fun program is being planned by Culture Club.
• Graduation Practice will be on June 8 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. in the AHS Gym. Practice is mandatory unless excused by Ms. Juarez due to an extenuating circumstance.
• Graduation will be held Thursday June 14 at 7:00 PM at the Performing Arts Center in Burien. Admission is by ticket only. Expectations for attire and conduct were mailed home to seniors and parent/guardians. If you have misplaced yours, please ask Ms. Suiaunoa or Mrs. Hiranaka for another copy.
• Last day of school for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors will be Friday, June 15 from 9:00 a.m. to noon. The staff will be flipping pancakes that morning and serving up good cheer and fond farewells for the summer. This annual tradition always represents a good time for everyone.
• On June 16, NASA’s Spoace Shuttle Trainer arrives at the Museum of Flight! The Museum is planning an extraordinary weekend to celebrate its arrival, and the AHS community is invited to be part of a special celebration at 11:00 a.m. The Shuttle Trainer’s crew compartment (the most recognizable piece with the nose cone) will arrive aboard NASA’s Super Guppy aircraft, which will have flown along the Seattle waterfront and over the Space Needle. The Guppy will then taxi to the Museum of Flight where a ceremonial celebration will take place, including a parade from Boeing Field to the Museum’s Space Gallery, the Trainer’s final resting place. Please mark your calendar to be part of this very special celebration! Some AHS students may actually be part of the ceremonies. Stay tuned.

As I close my message for this week, I wish all students taking the Algebra and Geometry End-of-Course exams the very best! Enjoy this week of learning and an extended weekend. There will be no school on Monday, May 28th in honor of Memorial Day.

I am honored to be your principal. ~Reba G.
