PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE:

‘Tis the season for Sports of the Mind!
 Science Olympians are heading to Camas this Saturday for their first invitational. We wish all Olympians well and will eagerly wait to hear from Coaches McComb and Dyer after the event. Stay tuned for a news report in next week’s edition of the NOTAM. Yea, Science Olympians!
 Speech & Debate team competed this past weekend, with Royce Le and Katie McConville making it to semifinals! Also in attendance were Jenny Gao, Karan Singh, Andrew Johnson, Benton Coblentz, Hanan Diriye, and Deanta Kelly. Congratulations and good luck, team, at this weekend’s Federal Way competition!
 The Skunkworks Robotics team, family members and mentors were up bright and early this past Saturday morning to attend the FIRST Robotics kickoff in Auburn, along will thousands of others FIRST teams across the country and internationally. They learned that this year’s competition is a basketball-oriented game called Rebound Rumble, and they are already strategizing on design and building of the robot. Build season has officially started and will continue for the next six weeks. It will be exciting to watch the progress and see the finished robot. Go Skunks!
If you are curious about the details of this year’s game, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtube_gdata_player&v=zv_utsmGdNk

Congratulations to Alex Williams who recently soloed in a Cessna 152 at Renton Airport! Alex’s goal is to earn his private pilot’s license by graduation this spring. Kudos, Alex, for keeping the dream alive and striving to reach this magnificent goal!

We will have a special assembly this Wednesday in honor of Martin Luther King and subsequently, there will be no school on Monday, January 20 as the nation celebrates Dr. King’s legacy. School will resume on Tuesday, January 21.

If you have recently flown Alaska Airlines and read their Inflight Magazine, you already know there’s a great article about theme-based schools, featuring Aviation High School. If not, you can access the article at http://alaskaairlines.journalgraphicsdigital.com/jan12// . Thank you, Alaska, for being such a wonderful partner!

This Thursday’s evening Information Program for Eighth Graders & Parents will be our final one of the school year. Thanks in advance to those who will be assisting. As a gentle reminder, you must have been asked by a teacher, office staff member or administrator to participate. While we love all of you, please show up only if your name is on the ‘list’ that teachers provide to Mrs. Hiranaka. As usual, we will provide a pizza dinner for students who have been invited to help. Your ambassadorship is greatly appreciated!

My best for an inspired week of learning. I am honored to be your principal.
~Reba G.

“I have a dream…”
(Editor’s Note: Martin Luther King, Jr.’s speech was 17 minutes, delivered on August 28, 1963, and was a call for racial equality and an end to discrimination. I encourage you to read the speech once again in honor of this dedicated man’s commitment and everlasting legacy.)
