20 June 2011
Principal’s Message
Time does fly, along with airplanes, spacecraft, and birds! Our school year is coming to a close as of 12:00 p.m. next Monday, 27 June. This will be the last NOTAM of the school year, so my Sunday homework of writing it goes away until school resumes in September.
Speaking of school ending…I’ll miss you all! It’s been a great year at AHS. Each year when students depart for summer break, I always find myself reflecting on how much I have learned from all of you. Children truly are our greatest teachers! Thank you for your gifts of both teaching and learning.
And speaking of school starting again…I wish I could tell you the official start date, but the calendar has not yet been determined for 2011-2012. I am hoping that it will be soon, which could possibly be this week. Be assured that as soon as we know, we will inform you—on both the AHS and PTSA websites and letters mailed to your homes if necessary. Please continue to check the websites over the summer.
Keeping with tradition, Aviation High School will officially welcome the incoming freshman class on Friday, 5 August with a presentation by members of the Blue Angels Flight Team. We’ll gather in the Executive Hangar of Galvin Flying at 7:45 a.m. The program usually ends around 9:15ish followed by picture taking if the flight team has enough time before their next scheduled event. While this event is for freshmen and their families, if you missed attending in a previous year, you are welcome to join the fun this year. Just let me know in advance, please.
Congratulations to everyone who has interviewed for a summer internship! Ms. Burr reports that we have approximately 40 internships lined up for summer in a variety of aviation-related companies. Continue to check with Ms. Burr or Ms. Pappas to learn of new opportunities, as there could be more over the summer. You may also wish to attend the Society of Flight Test Engineers symposium from 8 – 12 August; it will be a great opportunity for you to learn more about the world of flight test and to network with professional engineers. Contact Ms. Burr for details.
Congratulations to Liam Wingard who just recently was recognized as an Eagle Scout! Earning an Eagle is a result of lots of hard work and commitment. We commend you, Liam!
Congratulations to our seniors who are now graduates of the Class of 2011! They have now officially commenced to life after high school! Their graduation ceremony was inspiring with speeches by Olivia Pham, Betsy Smith, and Jim Stone as well as their selected staff speaker Mr. McComb. And…it was well organized, thanks to our wonderful Ms. Juarez who served as graduation coordinator.
One more note about next Monday: We’re cooking a pancake breakfast for you! You won’t want to miss our culinary delights! :-)
To everyone within the Aviation High School learning community: Thank you for believing in the vision and mission of our school and doing your part and then some to support students and their learning. That’s what it is all about! As always, I am honored to lead this amazing learning community and to be your principal. Best wishes for a summer of fun and continued learning. ~Reba
