MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:
This week’s NOTAM is filled with important announcements of upcoming events and commendations for many AHS students who have been actively involved in athletics, sports of the mind, artistic endeavors, mentoring activities, and planning of ASB-related activities. I encourage you to read through the entire NOTAM and congratulate those students whose names are in bold print. I am proud of all of you!

Special congratulations go to three junior women who will soon be honored by the Association of University Women for their outstanding accomplishments in science, math, and technology. Lydia Johnston will be recognized as AHS’s recipient in science; Melissa Lewis for math; and Roxann Roque for technology. Congratulations, ladies! I’ll look forward to seeing you honored in late May!

Our awesome PTSA is busy planning the annual Dan Hartley Potato Dinner, which will be held on Friday, March 19. I am encouraging students and families—current, past, and future—to attend this important event. Doing so makes a big difference in our ability to award scholarships each year! And besides…it’s fun! Read more about it in a later section of the NOTAM and mark your calendars to attend!
Special thanks to everyone who helped with interviewing eighth grade applicants last Saturday—Matt Gilbert, Matt Iverson, Paula Cieszkiewicz, Claire Fernandez, Amanuail Ambaye, Jared Sharp, Melissa Lewis, Jeffry Reynolds, Andrew Reece, Ms. Stark and Ms. Pappas. We appreciate you! There will be more opportunities to serve on an interview team, too, so please see Ms. Stark if you are interested in participating.

Enjoy an inspiring week of learning! Honored to be your principal—Reba

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR SCIENCE OLYMPIANS!
This weekend, 45 of our Olympians traveled to Seattle Central Community College to participate in the 2010 Northwest Washington Regional Science Olympiad. The Olympiad was the culmination of months of effort and hard work. As we have come to expect, our three teams represented the school with distinction, demonstrating good sportsmanship, superlative cooperation, and outstanding resilience.

While we celebrate individuals’ contributions (see below), successful teams rely on each person to do their part; our Olympians did and do! Our Phoenix team came in third place (in a field of 24 teams) and therefore qualified for a berth at State on 9 April 2010. Our Pegasus and Hippogriff teams came in at 12th and 13th place, respectively.

Some particularly notable performances include:
Rebecca and Susan Pham placed first in both Cell Biology and Disease Detectives
Salina Abraham and Matt Petroske placed first in Remote Sensing
Wendy Au and Daryl Phuong placed third in Elevated Bridge
Wendy Au and Albert Ta placed third in Mission Possible
Daryl Phuong and Ted Tagami placed second in Environmental Chemistry
Jenny Gao and Libby Redda placed third in Forensics, and Kathryn Shaw and Viviana Ramirez placed fourth.
Andrew May and Ryan Sanders placed fourth in Egg-o-Naut

Special congratulations to our first-time Olympians, including outstanding work on the part of:
Allen May and Carlos Herrera placed first in Egg-o-Naut
Regina O’Kelley and Manmeet Singh placed fifth in Ornithology
Naomi Smith, Emily Kelley, and Jenni Luoma placed fifth in Mission Possible

The day was topped off by a surprise birthday celebration for both Mrs. Durrant and Mr. McComb.

As with any event of this magnitude, we could not have done it without the continued help of our parent supporters and volunteers: Mr. Balsiger, Mr. Smith, Mrs. May, Mr. O’Kelley, Mr. and Mrs. Malchodi, Ms. Mays, Mr. and Mrs. Sanders, Mrs. Elliott, and Mr. and Mrs. Phuong.

CONGRATULATIONS TO PTSA REFLECTIONS PARTICIPANTS:
The following AHS students are recognized for their participation in the 2009-2010 PTA Reflections Contest, “Beauty Is…”:
Danica Balsiger & Sarah DeWeese each received a Finalist award at AHS and Award of Excellence at the Highline Council for their literary entries.
Molly Torgerson received a Finalist award at AHS and Outstanding Interpretation from Highline Council for her literature entry entitled “In Plain Sight” earning it a spot in the state competition.
Mariko Yoshino also received a Finalist award at AHS and Outstanding Interpretation from Highline Council for her visual arts piece entitled “Beach Babe” earning it a spot in the state competition. Good luck at state Molly & Mariko. We celebrated with all four participants last week with a special prize & lunch from Tuscany at Des Moines Creek Restaurant. Want to earn a free lunch and great prize too? Plan to participate next year when the Reflections theme for 2010-2011 will be “Together We Can...”

NICE WORK AJ, WENDY, SARAH!
Many, many thanks to AJ Sullivan, Wendy Au, and Sarah Canul for their amazing MC-ing skills! As mentees, these three students volunteered to develop the agenda and served as Masters of Ceremonies at the most recent Mentor Meeting. During the breakfast event on February 10th, they welcomed over 80 mentors and students, shared program updates, provided great insight into their own mentor/mentee experiences, and challenged everyone in the room to network with someone in the room they’d never met. It was a spirited meeting, and wildly successful thanks to their professionalism and humor. ~ Ms. Pappas

CONGRATULATIONS TO AHS ATHLETES:

See you all there at this wonderful celebration of our awesome school!

Why Dan Hartley?
Dan Hartley was one of the earliest champions of Aviation High School. A local Highline resident, Dan enjoyed a life-long career in aviation and aerospace at Boeing where he also served as President of his union, the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA). When Dan heard about the plans for Aviation High School, he immediately became one of the school’s strongest advocates speaking before the Highline District School Board and encouraging others to lend their support.

Dan Hartley was also a family man who, along with his loving wife Marian, raised four children. Sadly Dan passed away on March 17, 2004 on his 70th birthday of complications from a second heart attack. Characteristically, his family requested that remembrances be made to Dan’s favorite causes, one of which was Aviation High School. The school could not have been more honored. We know that the students coming to Aviation High School are the young Dan Hartley’s of the future.

All proceeds from this annual PTSA sponsored Potato Dinner will be added to the Dan Hartley Scholarship Fund. As the funds continue to grow, students in the graduating class that best exemplify the traits and characteristics of Dan, will be eligible to earn the award.

SOPHOMORE FAMILIES:
The new Washington State High School Proficiency Exam is coming soon! AHS students have a proud tradition of scoring well on the assessments and a long tradition of sophomores having plenty to eat and drink during the test. Coincidence? I think not. Please donate water and snacks if you can! Thanks!

If pilots encounter a problem with the plane during flight, they fill out a form, called a 'gripe sheet,' which tells mechanics about problems with the aircraft.
