MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:
Congratulations to our Skunks, their mentors, parents, and many volunteers for an outstanding performance this past weekend at the FIRST Regional Competition at Key Arena! If you attended any part of the three-day event you already know that our Skunkworks Robotics Team has placed Aviation High School on the map of premier FIRST teams in the Pacific Northwest! They are amazing in so many ways, both on the field and off, demonstrating a well-rounded skill set that includes technical, engineering, business, marketing and interpersonal competencies that are the hallmark of a premier team. One only has to observe them for a short while to realize that every member of the team believes in the mission of FIRST and is playing full out to ensure that they are competitive and that every other team is playing at full advantage. Our Skunks don’t just subscribe to FIRST’s mantra of ‘gracious professionalism’—they live it! And, because of their dedication and service to others within the community, they earned the highest award possible this past weekend—the Regional Chairman’s Award! Their trophy case will now showcase this wonderful award, and a fourth blue banner will be placed on their Wall of Fame. Again, congratulations, Skunks and Coach Steele and Coach Wilson! You definitely earned this top recognition, and we’re all very proud of you! Now…on to the World Championships in Atlanta in April!

If you didn’t get a chance to attend the competition this past weekend, you may want to catch some of the spirit, courtesy of local media. Several of our Skunks were interviewed, including Jennifer Minar, who may well deserve the best quote award! Read the Seattle Times article to find Jennifer’s statement!

CONGRATULATIONS
Jason Lemley had a great meet at the Age Group Sectional Championship Swim Meet over the March 19th weekend…..over 110 teams were there from all over the west coast. He swam Friday morning in the 50 free Pre-lims…….barely made it into the “finals” on Friday night….was seated 7th……then swam the “finals” on Friday eve….and placed 2nd with a best time!! Then on Sat. morning….he swam the 100 free in “pre-lims”….again barely made it into the ‘finals’ on Saturday eve….was seated 7th…..and ended up WINNING the 100 free on Sat. evening…..so, needless to say…we were excited!! So…..a 2nd in the 50 free….and a 1st in the 100 free.

WHAT’S IT LIKE IN SPACE?
Aviation High School students, faculty, staff and mentors will have an exciting opportunity to talk live via SKYPE with Dr. Michael Barrett, a physician, astronaut and pilot who works with NASA and recently returned from a long run in the international space station. On April 21st from approximately 12:30 -2:00 pm we will gather in the gym for this interactive opportunity. Dr. Barrett will start by sharing the highlights of his career and then spend about 15 minutes describing what human space flight is like. “Do the students have specific interests?” he asked. “What about life support systems in space? Habitability? Flight ops?” His fascinating presentation is sure to generate even more questions and there will be plenty of time to ask him. We’re developing the specifics of the program and how many students and adults will be able to participate, but stay tuned for more details and if you’re particularly interested in attending, let Julie Burr know, she’s in the Career Center’s Office of Internships and Mentoring, email

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:
If you attended the Dan Hartley Potato Dinner last Friday, I’m sure you realize that our amazing PTSA again went all-out in planning and facilitating another successful and highly entertaining event! It was great fun to see so many of our graduates and their families in attendance, along with current and future students and families. And, I don’t think I’ve ever seen as many students perform ‘their’ version of an Irish Jig! While Lamond Le made it to the final two in the dance contest, the prize of an introductory flight lesson, courtesy of Galvin Flying Service, went to a lovely young lady who captured the heart and applause of the audience. I’m sure she’s much too young to fly yet, so perhaps her intro flight will be a scenic one instead. And, maybe there will even be room for Lamond!

We owe a big thanks to the organizers of the Dan Hartley Dinner—Liz Campisteguy and Bonnie Gustafson. All details were taken care of, thanks to these two amazing ladies and many other parents who worked with them. Seniors, you will particularly want to thank Mrs. Campisteguy and Mrs. Gustafson since the proceeds will fund scholarships for you! In addition to Liz and Bonnie, thanks goes to Elizabeth Chayer and her students for providing the Irish dancing; and to Peter Anderson for continuing the tradition of serving as Master of Ceremonies; and for Mr. Hoehne for bringing in the ‘dough’ as the auctioneer. I also extend sincere thanks to the Hartley family for again joining us for the event and reminding us of how very fortunate we were to have known Dan! To everyone who attended or played a role in the event, know that you are appreciated! I’m already looking forward to next year’s dinner!

So…freshmen and sophomores, I hope you are looking forward to attending the FIRST Robotics competition at Key Arena this Friday! Your permission forms should have been turned in last Friday, which is your ‘ticket’ to getting on the bus. We will be using the returned forms to assign you to a chaperone this week, and you will then be notified via your science teacher. On Friday, you will report to your chaperone’s room* (promptly…by 8:50 a.m. would be appreciated!), then be escorted to the busses, which will depart at 9:05 a.m. You are to be in school dress code, too! While you will see some other teams in jeans, you will not see our Skunks in them! Our Skunkworks’ team prides themselves on being professionally dressed, along with exhibiting gracious professionalism in all they do. We expect the same of all of you. (Note: If I am your chaperone, you should report to my office; report to Mr. McComb’s office if he is your chaperone.)

So…how many days are left in third quarter? You do the counting, and as you do, I encourage you to make every minute of learning count.

Happy Spring, too! As always, I’m honored to be your principal—Reba

Greetings from Puget Sound Skills Center (PSCC):

On Friday evening, I’m hoping that all students, families, and staff will attend the annual Dan Hartley Potato Dinner at the IAM Hall in Southpark, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. If you haven’t yet marked your calendars to attend, please do so now! It’s an evening of fun that will include hearing from former Hartley Scholarship recipients, Irish dancing and perhaps even an Irish jig contest in which the “winner” gets an amazing prize, spirited bidding for student-made and other treasured auction items, and just good ‘ole fun in mixing and mingling with families and special guests! See you there! (Please refer to the PTSA messages section of this NOTAM for further event details).

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:
Our Skunkworks Robotics team and Speech and Debate (S&D) team are just back from an exciting and rewarding weekend of competition!

In a message to staff, S&D Coach Shiroma wrote, “Just wanted to let everyone know how we did at our national qualifiers. This was our second year going and we sent the maximum of four Public Forum teams to compete. In a pool of 24 teams we did relatively well. The competition was a double elimination tournament, and Jenny Gao and Libby Redda made top 12, Hayk Saakian and Ted Tagami made top 7, John Doty and Justin Dubinsky got 5th, and Albert Ta and Brian Chan got 3rd, and first alternate slot for the national tournament. In speech we sent 7 students and Jenny made it to the top 8 of 24 in Foreign Extemporaneous, and Hayk made it to the final round and got 4th place and second alternate to the national tournament. While none of our teams actually qualified to the tournament, we made a good showing, eliminating 3rd and 4th year competitors. If you see any of these students around, be sure to congratulate them on their achievements. I, on the other hand, will try to catch up on a little more sleep.” Congratulations, Speech and Debaters! We are very proud of you!

Our Skunks were in Portland this past weekend for their first big competition, and they, too, returned victorious. In a message to the Skunkworks Team and parents, Coach Steele wrote, “The team performed magnificently...you should all be very proud of yourselves and your team members. We won the Kleiner-Perkins Award, the Website Award AND the Safety Award. Winning three awards in one regional is incredibly rare, and we all need to thank the tremendous mentor support that allowed the team to put together the documents and knowledge to show the judges what we are about. We also fought very hard on the field and ended up in the Semi-finals, losing only to the Regional winners. We are certainly a force on the
field…and I will NEVER forget those 2 last quarter final matches when we really got to show what we could do. We are a team…and you are ALL winners!” Indeed, you are, Skunks! Congratulations! Next competition is at Key Arena, and we’ll be there cheering for you!

On a different note, if you watched the Academy Awards last night, I hope your favorites were on stage! Our own future television and film director, Kevin Schilling, predicted who would take the awards, and I think he may have predicted well! My prediction is that Mr. Schilling will someday be on that very stage, accepting his own awards! Let’s hope he remembers his roots at AHS!

Best to all for an inspiring week of learning! Honored to be your principal. Reba

See you all there at this wonderful celebration of our awesome school!

Why Dan Hartley?
Dan Hartley was one of the earliest champions of Aviation High School. A local Highline resident, Dan enjoyed a life-long career in aviation and aerospace at Boeing where he also served as President of his union, the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA). When Dan heard about the plans for Aviation High School, he immediately became one of the school’s strongest advocates-speaking before the Highline District School Board and encouraging others to lend their support.

Dan Hartley was also a family man who, along with his loving wife Marian, raised four children. Sadly Dan passed away on March 17, 2004 on his 70th birthday of complications from a second heart attack. Characteristically, his family requested that remembrances be made to Dan’s favorite causes, one of which was Aviation High School. The school could not have been more honored. We know that the students coming to Aviation High School are the young Dan Hartley’s of the future.

All proceeds from this annual PTSA sponsored Potato Dinner will be added to the Dan Hartley Scholarship Fund. As the funds continue to grow, students in the graduating class that best exemplify the traits and characteristics of Dan, will be eligible to earn the award.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:
This week’s NOTAM is filled with important announcements of upcoming events and commendations for many AHS students who have been actively involved in athletics, sports of the mind, artistic endeavors, mentoring activities, and planning of ASB-related activities. I encourage you to read through the entire NOTAM and congratulate those students whose names are in bold print. I am proud of all of you!

Special congratulations go to three junior women who will soon be honored by the Association of University Women for their outstanding accomplishments in science, math, and technology. Lydia Johnston will be recognized as AHS’s recipient in science; Melissa Lewis for math; and Roxann Roque for technology. Congratulations, ladies! I’ll look forward to seeing you honored in late May!

Our awesome PTSA is busy planning the annual Dan Hartley Potato Dinner, which will be held on Friday, March 19. I am encouraging students and families—current, past, and future—to attend this important event. Doing so makes a big difference in our ability to award scholarships each year! And besides…it’s fun! Read more about it in a later section of the NOTAM and mark your calendars to attend!
Special thanks to everyone who helped with interviewing eighth grade applicants last Saturday—Matt Gilbert, Matt Iverson, Paula Cieszkiewicz, Claire Fernandez, Amanuail Ambaye, Jared Sharp, Melissa Lewis, Jeffry Reynolds, Andrew Reece, Ms. Stark and Ms. Pappas. We appreciate you! There will be more opportunities to serve on an interview team, too, so please see Ms. Stark if you are interested in participating.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR SCIENCE OLYMPIANS!
This weekend, 45 of our Olympians traveled to Seattle Central Community College to participate in the 2010 Northwest Washington Regional Science Olympiad. The Olympiad was the culmination of months of effort and hard work. As we have come to expect, our three teams represented the school with distinction, demonstrating good sportsmanship, superlative cooperation, and outstanding resilience.

While we celebrate individuals’ contributions (see below), successful teams rely on each person to do their part; our Olympians did and do! Our Phoenix team came in third place (in a field of 24 teams) and therefore qualified for a berth at State on 9 April 2010. Our Pegasus and Hippogriff teams came in at 12th and 13th place, respectively.

Some particularly notable performances include:
Rebecca and Susan Pham placed first in both Cell Biology and Disease Detectives
Salina Abraham and Matt Petroske placed first in Remote Sensing
Wendy Au and Daryl Phuong placed third in Elevated Bridge
Wendy Au and Albert Ta placed third in Mission Possible
Daryl Phuong and Ted Tagami placed second in Environmental Chemistry
Jenny Gao and Libby Redda placed third in Forensics, and Kathryn Shaw and Viviana Ramirez placed fourth.
Andrew May and Ryan Sanders placed fourth in Egg-o-Naut

Special congratulations to our first-time Olympians, including outstanding work on the part of:
Allen May and Carlos Herrera placed first in Egg-o-Naut
Regina O’Kelley and Manmeet Singh placed fifth in Ornithology
Naomi Smith, Emily Kelley, and Jenni Luoma placed fifth in Mission Possible

The day was topped off by a surprise birthday celebration for both Mrs. Durrant and Mr. McComb.

As with any event of this magnitude, we could not have done it without the continued help of our parent supporters and volunteers: Mr. Balsiger, Mr. Smith, Mrs. May, Mr. O’Kelley, Mr. and Mrs. Malchodi, Ms. Mays, Mr. and Mrs. Sanders, Mrs. Elliott, and Mr. and Mrs. Phuong.

CONGRATULATIONS TO PTSA REFLECTIONS PARTICIPANTS:
The following AHS students are recognized for their participation in the 2009-2010 PTA Reflections Contest, “Beauty Is…”:
Danica Balsiger & Sarah DeWeese each received a Finalist award at AHS and Award of Excellence at the Highline Council for their literary entries.
Molly Torgerson received a Finalist award at AHS and Outstanding Interpretation from Highline Council for her literature entry entitled “In Plain Sight” earning it a spot in the state competition.
Mariko Yoshino also received a Finalist award at AHS and Outstanding Interpretation from Highline Council for her visual arts piece entitled “Beach Babe” earning it a spot in the state competition. Good luck at state Molly & Mariko. We celebrated with all four participants last week with a special prize & lunch from Tuscany at Des Moines Creek Restaurant. Want to earn a free lunch and great prize too? Plan to participate next year when the Reflections theme for 2010-2011 will be “Together We Can...”

NICE WORK AJ, WENDY, SARAH!
Many, many thanks to AJ Sullivan, Wendy Au, and Sarah Canul for their amazing MC-ing skills! As mentees, these three students volunteered to develop the agenda and served as Masters of Ceremonies at the most recent Mentor Meeting. During the breakfast event on February 10th, they welcomed over 80 mentors and students, shared program updates, provided great insight into their own mentor/mentee experiences, and challenged everyone in the room to network with someone in the room they’d never met. It was a spirited meeting, and wildly successful thanks to their professionalism and humor. ~ Ms. Pappas

CONGRATULATIONS TO AHS ATHLETES:
Congratulations go out to the 2010 State Dive Champion Troy Neklason, a junior at Aviation High School. Diving for Highline, he placed 1st in League, 1st in District, and now 1st place at the State meet Saturday at the Aquatic Center in Federal Way. His 3rd year at state, he holds a bronze, a silver, and now a gold medal. Sixteen-year old Neklason will now compete in a Regional meet in Beaverton, OR and a West National meet in Minneapolis, MN in April.

Jason Lemley, Andrew Garrido, and Troy N. all had an excellent STATE meet! Andrew Garrido’s 200 Free Relay placed 8rh; Jason Lemley placed 6th in the 50 Freestyle, 11th in the 100 Backstroke, and his two relays, 200 Medley Relay and 400 Freestyle Relay placed 4th. The Mt. A local Highline resident, Dan enjoyed a life-long career in aviation and aerospace at Boeing where he also served as President of his union, the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA). When Dan heard about the plans for Aviation High School, he immediately became one of the school’s strongest advocates speaking before the Highline District School Board and encouraging others to lend their support.

Quote of the Week:
If pilots encounter a problem with the plane during flight, they fill out a form, called a 'gripe sheet,' which tells mechanics about problems with the aircraft. The mechanics correct the problems, document their repairs on the form, and then pilots review the gripe sheets before the next flight.
