Interviews for Class of 2016
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE:
Interviewing began last week for next year’s freshman class. Four interview teams led by Mr. Kelly, Ms. Burr/Mr. Borfitz, Ms. Pappas, and me interviewed 64 students on Saturday alone! Mrs. Hiranaka and Mrs. Sanders provided a parent orientation and students Jared Sharp, Melissa Will, and Sophia Casam managed the front office to meet, greet, direct, and monitor. AHS students participating on the interview teams included Lori Baca, Lauren Crom, Austin Fischer, Jacob Wagner, Hiren Ajudia, Raj DeYoung, Jonah Graves, Jocob Hoag, Jennifer Luoma, Austin Spores, Andrew Tabalbag, Alex Wencel, Kris Hartelius, Salina Abraham, Natalie Carmichael, and Robyn Zaches. Thanks to everyone on this amazing team as well as our very talented Office Manager Ms. Suiaunoa who scheduled the interviews and prepared all the files to make our process run smoothly! We’ll be continuing the process for the next three Saturday’s so that we can extend invitations to students in the Class of 2016 by April 1.
Further thanks and congratulations are extended to the following:
• Mrs. Tamera Nason for organizing and working an AHS booth during the NW Aviation Convention and Trade Show last weekend in Puyallup. Assisting in promoting AHS and recruiting students, mentors, and internship opportunities were Alex Wencel, Chris Gregg and his mother Lynn, Austin Jackowski, Gavin Zahm, Raj DeYoung, and Alex Robins. Thank you to Mrs. Nason and AHS ambassadors!
• Serena Simkus for receiving the Aspirations in Computing Award sponsored by NCWIT. Serena will be honored at a special award reception on Saturday, March 17 at the UW. Kudos, Serena!
• Antony Zhong and Taka Sano for passing the Japanese Proficiency Exam, Level III, sponsored by the Japan Foundation last December. This exam was held at the University of Washington, and passing the test is equivalent to college 2nd year level completion. It also can be translated as a 4 or a 5 of the AP Japanese exam, which represents an exceptional accomplishment!
• Phansa Chaonpoj, Brian Huynh, and Dean Lancaster Yu volunteered to represent the school during the annual Puget Sound Engineering Council’s Engineering Fair held on Saturday, February 11th at the Museum of Flight. The students staffed an AHS booth and answered questions about the school, the curriculum, and the career readiness programs such as mentoring and internships. Fair goers and event planners were very impressed. Many thanks and nice job!
• AHS’s INTERACT Club is sponsored by the Southcenter Rotary. On Saturday evening, February 11th, Elsa Aguilar, Aaliah Carmona, Ahmed Fageri, Katrina Mateo, John Paul Palapil, Mac Singh, and Kentaro Tourangeau volunteered to assist at the annual auction. Graduate Kristina Ong was also in attendance as a speaker, thanking the Rotary for the scholarship she received to help defray expenses at the UW. All students were officially thanked by the Rotary President and Interact Liaison for their time, effort, and several hours of hard work – our thanks and congratulations to them also for representing the school so well.
• On Friday, February 24th, a group of 20 students were invited to tour the Boeing SWARM Lab. The Boeing staff at the facility is experts in programming unmanned vehicles, and through a multi-media, computer generated and hands-on exhibition, the students enjoyed an incredible learning experience that was unique for a high school student. Our thanks to mentors Rebecca Polivy and Tammy Wooley for arranging this amazing tour.
The High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE) is scheduled for March 13, 14, and 15 for all sophomores. Since we know that students are likely to do much better when well fed and hydrated, we are requesting donations of water and healthy snacks from our parent community. Your contribution will be greatly appreciated and can be dropped off in Room 11.
It’s March, which signifies that spring will soon be here. It also signifies a change to daylight savings time this Sunday, March 11. Remember to ‘spring forward’ one hour in setting your clocks and try to catch up on the hour of sleep that you will lose. March also means the end of third quarter on March 30th. And of course it means that Robotics competition is in full swing! Remember to wish our Skunks well as they head to Portland this Thursday for their first competition of the season.
My best to everyone for an engaging week of learning! Honored to be your principal—Reba G.

National Honor Society is having their annual Pennies for Patients fundraiser, starting Monday, March 5th and lasting three weeks. Pennies for Patients is a fundraiser that raises money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to help with cancer research. This fundraiser is for a great cause, but it is also a very fun competition. The winning advisory at the end of the three weeks will win a lunch sponsored by Olive Garden. Each advisory has a box in it that you can put money into any time of the day, except the boxes will be collected every day and counted. The same rules apply as last year, meaning that coins will add to your advisories total, while bills will take away from it. So add coins to your advisories box, and put bills in other advisories boxes to help your advisory win! Each teacher will have an update of which advisories are in the lead every day, and there will be an updated sheet outside of the office and in the cafeteria as well. Join NHS in helping to raise money for cancer research, and let's have a fun competition for a lunch sponsored by Olive Garden!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
If we have learned one thing from the history of invention and discovery, it is that, in the long run - and often in the short one - the most daring prophecies seem laughably conservative.
