PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Congratulations to Collins Mbugua on his selection as an Outstanding Participant in the National Achievement Scholarship Program and to Sean Crowley for his selection as a Commended Student in the program. Both students are receiving this recognition for quality performance on the Preliminary SAT test. Adding this recognition to their college applications and resumes lets college admission representatives and employers know that they are serious and hard-working students. We’re proud of you, Collins and Sean!

The first dance of the school year was held this past Saturday evening, and by all accounts, it was a grand success. Congratulations to the ASB and Advisor Ms. Fitz for their leadership to ensure that the Aviator’s Ball was enjoyed by so many!

On Saturday, November 12, the Royal Aeronautical Society is sponsoring the annual Joe Sutter Black Tie Dinner & Lecture at the Museum of Flight. This year’s featured speaker is Dennis O’Donoghue, Vice President of Boeing Test & Evaluation, whose speech is titled “The Quest for the First (Operational) Supersonic V/STOL Fighter: A Look Back at 60 Years of VSTOL Flight Research.” Mr. O’Donoghue is an experimental test pilot with more than 1,700 hours logged on all models of the Harrier, the world’s first operational V/STOL tactical jet aircraft. He will take an informative and entertaining look back at six decades of V/STOL flight research with videos, photos and personal stories. Aviation High School is fortunate to have a few aerospace leaders who are offering sponsorships for Aviation High School students. If you are interested in being sponsored to this prestigious event, please write a 350-500 word essay explaining why you want to attend and what you envision as the benefits of doing so. Please be specific. Essays are due to Ms. Burr in the College & Career Center by November 1, 2011.

Attention Seniors who are planning to pursue an education and career pathway in engineering: Thanks to the wonderful partnership our school has developed with Rolls Royce, there is a superb scholarship opportunity for one, possibly two seniors this year! It’s called the Spirit of Excellence Award in Engineering Innovation. In addition to a monetary award of $5,000, the recipients also get their names engraved on the fan blade of a RR Trent 1000 engine which is proudly displayed in the Main Office. Former recipients of this award include Lydia Johnston (Class of 2011) and Griffin Nicoll (Class of 2010), both well respected scholars and future engineers/innovators. The recipients of the award are expected to attend the Joe Sutter Dinner Lecture on November 12th where they will be recognized by the Royal Aeronautical Society and executives of Rolls Royce. The dinner is complimentary to the recipients and their parents. Application guidelines will be available from Ms. Carper and/or Mrs. Hiranaka by Wednesday of this week. Application due date is October 20—next week!

From the ASB:
Activities in October:
1. On October 26th 2011 ASB will be holding a scarecrow and pumpkin decoration competition among class advisories.
2. Currently each class is working on their PTSA Auction items. The Senior Class will going around during advisories for the next two weeks to get their propeller signed for the auction.

As everyone may know, this past Saturday ASB held the first dance of the year—the Aviator’s Ball. There were many students who came and we had the biggest turn out ever! Students gave feedback that they had a lot of fun and they really enjoyed the music and decorations. We would like to thank all the chaperones and Kelli Katzer and Jordyn McCluen the Senior Class Captains for planning the event.

Quote of the Week:
“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.
Don’t be trapped by dogma—which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice.
And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”
~Steve Jobs, 2005 Commencement Speech, Stanford University
