This Wednesday, our Skunks depart for Atlanta to participate in the FIRST Robotics World Championship. Go Skunks! We’ll be with you in spirit and glued to the webcasts as much as possible.

And, while most of us were away from school last week, our Science Olympians traveled to Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Washington for State Competition! We salute the performance and dedication of the entire team; congratulations to the following Olympians for their stellar performances:

Rebecca and Susan Pham placed 6th in Anatomy, 5th in Cell Biology and 3rd in Disease Detectives

The team made a proud showing, placing 9th overall and exhibiting world-class sportsmanship (again). We applaud their hard work and proud ambassadorship of AHS.

Again…welcome back! I’m honored to be your principal—Reba

ATTENTION, JUNIORS!
Registration for 2010 - 11
On Wednesday, 14 April, next year’s seniors (class of 2011) will have an opportunity to register for next year’s classes. This year, we are excited to allow you to get involved in choosing your classes for next year through a process called tennis-shoe registration. In tennis-shoe registration, YOU get to prioritize which classes are most important to you by signing up for those classes first.

In preparation for registration, your advisor will talk with you about the registration process. Registration forms and a DRAFT of the master calendar are available on the AHS website: Aviationhs.org. We strongly recommend that you spend time prior to registration thinking carefully about the classes you want to take, talking with teachers and parents, and considering the requirements of the colleges which you are hoping to attend.

On Tuesday in advisory, we will model the process for you.

On Wednesday, you will register during advisory.

Sophomores: we will repeat the process for you next week; start thinking now about the classes you’d like to take. You’ll register Wednesday, 21 April.

AHS INTRAMURALS MEETING
This week on Thursday April 15th at 3:45 there will be a meeting in the gym. Anyone who is interested in participating in intramurals should attend this meeting to sign up their team, ask clarifying questions about the program, and get dates for when we will start playing. If you are not able to go to the meeting and/or want regular updates feel free to visit the Aviation High School Intramurals page on Facebook.

OPEN GYM
Starts this week! Tuesdays and Fridays at lunch, Ms. Klug will be supervising students who want to play basketball (other sports are great too, if people want to play). All are welcome. Come join us tomorrow!

MYSTERY DINNER
The 2nd Annual Mystery Dinner will be held on April 23rd 2010 from 5:30 to 9:00 PM in the AHS Cafeteria. The theme this year is Murder in Paradise. It was a very popular event last year and space is limited so get your tickets early! Tickets sales are from April 12 to April 23, with NO tickets sold at the door.

Except for the Quote of the Week, the following announcements have been posted in previous editions of the NOTAM. They are still important and posted for your information and action, as appropriate:

ATTENTION SENIORS—$1,000 SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY WITH DEADLINE OF APRIL 15!
Aerojet is again offering a scholarship to an eligible Aviation High School senior! Applicants must be planning to pursue a STEM major and career and have a 3.0 grade point average or higher. Further details and copies of the application packet are available from Ms. Carper.

WHAT’S IT LIKE IN SPACE?
Aviation High School students, faculty, staff and mentors will have an exciting opportunity to talk live via SKYPE with Dr. Michael Barrett, a physician, astronaut and pilot who works with NASA and recently returned from a long run in the international space station. On April 21st from approximately 12:30 -2:00 pm we will gather in the gym for this interactive opportunity. Dr. Barrett will start by sharing the highlights of his career and then spend about 15 minutes describing what human space flight is like. “Do the students have specific interests?” he asked. “What about life support systems in space? Habitability? Flight ops?” His fascinating presentation is sure to generate even more questions and there will be plenty of time to ask him. We’re developing the specifics of the program and how many students and adults will be able to participate, but stay tuned for more details and if you’re particularly interested in attending, let Julie Burr know, she’s in the Career Center’s Office of Internships and Mentoring,
