PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE:
Congratulations to sophomore Katie McConville who recently won first place in an essay contest sponsored by the Federal Fleet Reserve, a congressionally chartered, non-profit organization that represents the interests of the Sea Service community (Navy, Marine, & Coast Guard). Katie responded to the prompt, “What Freedom of Speech Means to Me.” As the state and regional top award winner, Katie’s essay has now been forwarded to the national level for judging. National recipients receive a U.S. Savings Bond and recognition at a special ceremony. Kudos to Katie who found this opportunity on her own and followed through to meet criteria and timelines. (Note: Regional competition included nine states and territories—Washington, California, Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Hawaii, Guam, Puerto Rico, plus one additional area.
Last Friday’s Talent Show proved once again that AHS students possess some amazing talents in addition to being top scholars. I hope you had an opportunity to enjoy the production, and I encourage you to both congratulate and thank the performers, student planners, and Mrs. Wombold for her amazing leadership. Great job, everyone!
On Friday March 23 we will be taking an all-school field trip to Century Link to watch our Skunks perform in regional competition with hundreds of other FIRST teams. We will load the buses immediately after roll is taken that morning and return to school by 2:00 p.m., regular Friday dismissal time. Since the competition will continue for several more hours after we leave the event, we are considering the possibility of allowing one busload of students (approximately 50), along with chaperones, to stay at Century Link until 4:00 or 5:00 p.m. If you are interested in this option, there will be a sign-up sheet in the main office tomorrow, which will be available through March 9th. If you sign up, it must be with the understanding that you will need your own transportation home when we return that evening. More information about this all-school field trip will be provided as we get closer to the date. Permission forms will be distributed within the next two weeks.
Enjoy an awesome week of learning! I am honored to be your principal.
~Reba G.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE:
I hope your mini vacation from school was enjoyable! Welcome back!
Our Skunks didn’t get much of a vacation since the robot had to be “bagged” for shipping yesterday. I personally enjoyed the opportunity to see the robot perform on Monday evening, along with a large group of supporters who showed up for ice cream, congratulating the team, and seeing the robot shoot baskets and maneuver on the practice field. Go Skunks! Now…get some sleep and do your schoolwork, although I know you still have more work to do on the robot before competition. I’m proud of you and in awe of how you manage to accomplish so much!
Each year, the Association of University Women (AAUW) honors junior women who are top performers in math, science and technology. I’m pleased to report that Aviation High School’s recipients this year are: Anthea Phuong in Math, Caitlin Schaefer in Science and Paula Cieszkiewicz in Technology. They will attend a special reception in May, along with their parents, to be recognized by AAUW. Congratulations to our outstanding junior women!
Eagle Scout, Curtis Campisteguy, is in Olympia today (February 22) providing a Report to the State. Curtis was selected as one of five Eagle Scouts in his council and 1 of 30 for the entire state of Washington to report to the legislature! Congratulations, Curtis!
Andrea Wooley and Rocco Buty stepped up as AHS & STEM ambassadors last week at an Open House announcing the opening of a K-5 STEM school in West Seattle. They spoke to an overflowing audience of enthused parents, students, and community members, promoting the benefits of STEM education and representing AHS as a successful model of STEM implementation. It is heartwarming to see new STEM models emerging, particularly at the elementary and middle school levels. Thank you, Andrea and Rocco for sharing your expertise and enthusiasm with others!
Special thanks go to Ms. Burr and Ms. Pappas for organizing another inspiring Mentor Breakfast last Wednesday. The program included a special presentation by Naomi Rujoni in which she honored her mentor, Charles Beard, with glowing remarks about how he is helping her with college and career planning. Naomi also congratulated Mr. Beard on being selected as this year’s Puget Sound Engineering Council’s (PSEC) Ken Porter Education Award recipient. Mr. Beard has been a member of our mentor cadre since 2008, and it is no wonder that he has been selected for an Educator award. He is truly remarkable! Kudos, too, to Jennifer Luoma and her amazing mentor, Therese Beale, for sharing the story and excitement of a recent visit to Boeing’s Customer Experience Center. Mentor Mike Borfitz and Gerson Gutierrez also took center stage to tell the audience about their recent visit to South Seattle Community College to learn about the Airframe & Powerplant Mechanic (A&P) program. All presenters were excellent and are to be commended for their professionalism. I’m already looking forward to the next Mentor Breakfast that will be held April 18.
For the first time in the history of our school, a group of students entered the Real World Design Challenge, a very competitive engineering competition designed for high school students but requiring the skills that are usually more common to college students. I am super excited to announce that our AHS team, led by Katie McConville, took second place competing against three-time winner Kamiakin High School of Kennewick, WA. Watch out next year, Kamiakin, as the AHS Jet Pack team advances their knowledge and skills to compete for the gold! This year’s Jet Pack team included Jenny Gao, Austin Chick, Drew Hidalgo, Kris Hartlelius, Emily Kelley, and Barrett Estep.
Many of you may know that Highline Public Schools will be selecting a new superintendent by March 1st. The finalists for the position are Dr. Susan Enfield, Interim Superintendent of Seattle Public Schools; Dr. David Engle, former Seattle Public schools administrator and more recently Superintendent of North Platte Public Schools in Nebraska; and Dr. Joshua Garcia, Assistant Superintendent of Federal Way Public Schools. Candidates will each spend a full day in Highline, starting today and concluding on Friday. Each day will culminate with a public forum where the candidate will answer questions from the audience. Forums will be held at the Burien City Council Chambers at 400 SW 152nd Street from 6:00-7:15 p.m. This is an opportunity to learn about the unique experiences that qualify the candidates for leading Highline Public Schools and to express what matters most to you. The bios of each candidate are posted on Highline’s website at http://hsd401.org .
As I close this week’s message, I am gently reminding students and families that excused absences from school are primarily for illness, family and medical emergencies, medical appointments that cannot be made during non-school time, or unplanned situations over which the student or family has no control. Excused absences also include those that are pre-arranged, such as participating in a robotics competition out of town, visiting a college or university, etc. There is a pre-arranged absence form that can be obtained from Mrs. Hiranaka in the Main Office. The student then asks each of his teachers to sign the form, recommending approval or non approval. The administration makes the final decision regarding approval of pre-arranged absences and communicates the decision to the student and parents. Please plan carefully for an absence, which includes asking teachers to sign the form two weeks in advance of the absence. Thank you for following procedures and making being in school a #1 priority!
My best for a superb, short week of learning! I hope to see you at the Talent Show on Friday evening.
Honored to be your principal—Reba G.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE:
As a reminder, the last day of school for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors is June 15th—a Friday (moved forward a day due to snow). Because seniors can be out of school no more than five school days before the last day of school, this means that the last day for seniors will be Friday, June 8th. Graduation date remains the same: June 14, 7:00 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center in Burien. Please make a note of these schedule changes and plan accordingly.
My congratulatory remarks this week are extended to:
• Ms. Pappas, Moritz Wienke and Justin Knutson for serving as AHS ambassadors at Junior Achievement’s (JA) annual breakfast meeting last week at the Bell Harbor Convention Center on the Seattle Waterfront. JA invited them to share their learning from the recent Business Ethics course that Ms. Pappas incorporated in the Aviation Careers classes. They also had the opportunity to enlighten the audience about their future goals for college and career and how business ethics will influence their decision-making and behaviors. JA representatives reported that both students and Ms. Pappas were inspiring and impressive!
• Cameron Jaxheimer for earning his private pilot’s license last Tuesday! Cameron’s next step will be to get his complex and high performance endorsements before high school graduation, then his instrument rating this summer when he enrolls at the University of North Dakota where he has already been admitted and offered a Presidential Scholarship! Cameron’s career goal is to be a commercial pilot, and it’s obvious that he is well on his way to a great future in the skies!
• Libanos Redda and Kevin Schilling on their selection as Southcenter Rotary Students of the Month! Both students will be honored on February 27 at the Rotary’s noon luncheon meeting, and they will now be considered for a scholarship award.
• AHS graduate Sebastian Hill, who received word last week that he has been accepted to the Flight Training Program of the U.S. Air Force! Sebastian is a junior at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona and a member of ROTC and Arnold Air Society. When he graduates from ERAU next year, he will then go directly into the Air Force to begin pilot training, which has been his long-time goal and dream. Congratulations, Sebastian, on reaching this major milestone and for your commitment to serving our country.
• The AHS teaching staff for the amazing work they have done to develop authentic learning projects for students! Our professional development time this year has focused on project-based learning, with each instructor being tasked with the assignment of creating an aviation/aerospace-related project that connects student learning with industry issues and problems that need to be solved. Last Friday afternoon, 25 industry representatives came to AHS to hear teacher presentations and provide feedback to enhance the project and hence, increased learning opportunities for students. Just as our students assume a learning stance each and every day, so do our teachers. They ‘knocked the socks off’ of our guests last Friday, and I am immensely proud of them! Students, I encourage you to ask your teachers to share their learning with you and how they will use the feedback to improve learning experiences for you. After all…that’s precisely what we ask you to do, right? I know teachers will be pleased to share with you, and your feedback is just as important as our industry experts! (Added note: Huge thanks to the 25 professionals—pilots, engineers, CEOs, technology leaders, Museum of Flight staff and docents, community relations experts—who supported our professional development efforts last Friday! We are grateful!)
• Everyone in the AHS learning community for their commitment to academic excellence! For the third consecutive year, Aviation High School has been selected as a Washington Achiever School in the categories of Overall Excellence, Math, and Science. Only 22 high schools in the State received recognition for Overall Excellence, and AHS was the only high school (again) that received recognition for Science achievement. For more information about the 2011 Washington Achievement Awards, go to www.K12.wa.us/educationawards/WashingtonAchievement/default.aspx. And join me in celebrating this magnificent achievement with a virtual toast: Cheers to AHS! (Note: This award celebrates schools for overall excellence and special recognition in language arts, math, science, graduation rate, improvement and closing achievement gaps. Schools are selected based on their statewide assessment data for the previous three years, using the Achievement Index and methodology approved by both the Office of the Supt. of Public Instruction and the State Board of Education.)
While it seems hard to believe that the six-week build season for robotics is quickly coming to an end, our Skunks will be packing up their robot next week and shipping it off to their first competition, which will be held in Portland, Oregon on March 8-10. A “bagging” party/ice cream social is planned for Monday, February 20th at 6:00 p.m. in the AHS cafeteria. Everyone is welcome to attend, enjoy some ice cream, and get an up-close look at this year’s finished robot along with some insights into the game. Go Skunks!
President’s Day is next Monday, February 20 so there will be no school. Enjoy your four-day weekend, and we’ll see you on Wednesday, February 22 at the usual time. Enjoy your week of learning! I am honored to be your principal—Reba G.

Auditions for the AHS Talent Show are being held this week in preparation for the show that is scheduled for the evening of February 24. This is an amazing AHS event, which I look forward to each year. I am encouraging students, families, and friends to mark your calendars and plan to attend!
Congratulations are warmly extended to the following AHS stars this week:
• Austin McHenry on his selection as Youth of the Year by the Renton Boys & Girls Club. Austin now competes among other youth for a state award and an opportunity for an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. to meet President Obama. Good luck, Austin!
• Libanos Redda on her acceptance to the University of Southern California (USC) and being a Trustee Scholarship Finalist, which if awarded will provide full tuition support of approximately $42,000! As a finalist, Libby will be flown to USC this month for an overnight stay on campus and an interview. Yea, Libanos, along with our very best wishes in contending for such a magnificent scholarship award! (Note: Libanos has also applied to Johns Hopkins and Brown University, both which are high on her list for post-secondary studies.)
• Corry Fox, Savannah Mattson, Andre Park, Caitlin Schaefer, Tran Tonnu, Jacob Wagner, Dustin Werran on their selection as a Washington Aerospace Scholar. These seven AHS juniors were selected from 297 talented Washington State students in 110 different public, private, and home-schooled organizations. They will now spend the next five months competing academically for one of the 160 slots in a Summer Residency session held at the Museum of Flight in June and July. Congratulations and the very best to our WAS Scholars! (Readers: If you are interested in learning more about WAS, information is available at www.museumofflight.org/was.
• The entire Science Olympiad team for hosting an Invitational this past Saturday that attracted 22 teams and nearly 300 contenders from as far away as Stanwood to the north and Portland to the south. Working individually and as a team, students demonstrated their scientific knowledge and engineering mettle… and they did it with good sportsmanship and sense of camaraderie. Students earning recognition included Danica Balsiger and Cathryn Elliott who finished 3rd in Anatomy, and Sasha Friedrich and Jon Abramson who finished 4th in Astronomy.
Much credit for the success of the Invitational goes to parents and alum who assisted with the event. From the parents who helped feed the team to the supporters who so graciously volunteered their time and expertise, we are grateful for our families’ commitment to the academic growth of our entire community. Special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Balsiger, Mr. Collins, Mr. Danh, Mr. and Mrs. DeWeese, Ms. Durrant, Ms. Elliott and Mr. Kessler, Ms. Sando, Mr. and Mrs. Vader, Mr. and Mrs. Wooley and Ms. Weeks for helping supervise events. And gold stars to Coaches McComb and Dyer for their extraordinary commitment to the success of Science Olympiad and each member of the team!
Our Olympians’ next milepost is Regionals on 17 March; between now and then, they will be hard at work studying, building, and collaborating to again proudly and capably represent AHS.
• Andrew Beal and Benton Coblentz on their Page experiences with Senators Keiser and Fain respectively. Both Senators contacted us to complement Andy and Benton on their outstanding participation. It appears that Andrew even drafted a bill to take football out of high school, citing it as being too dangerous. Kudos to both Andrew and Benton for their interests in state government and representing AHS so well!
Please read the announcements, both new and previous, to ensure that you are aware of happenings and opportunities within the AHS community.
That’s it for this week! Honored to be your principal—Reba G.
