MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:
Last week, Mr. Jim Albaugh, CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes visited our school to interact with members of our learning community. Our robotics, Science Olympiad, and ACE team members showcased their learning, along with students in Mr. Joshi’s Flight by Design class. Thank you to everyone who participated! In a follow-up email with Mr. Albaugh, he wrote, “It was a great day and very inspiring. I have no worries about this generation after my hour at the school. They will change the world.” Indeed, you will, AHS scholars!
Our amazing PTSA also sponsored a culminating program at the Performing Arts Center last week that was attended by approximately 150 AHS parents, students, staff, legislators, and community members. Many of our incoming parents and students were in attendance, too, eager to become informed and engaged in our school culture. Our ASB officers and representatives profusely thanked the PTSA for their support of so many activities this past year, and recognition awards were presented to Senator Karen Keiser, Representative Tina Orwall, Representative & Chairman of the House Education Committee Dave Quall, and to Linda Lanham, CEO of Aerospace Futures Alliance for their support in this past legislative session to gain capital funding for building a new school at the Museum of Flight and for designating AHS as a lighthouse model of STEM education. Special thanks goes to Katy Kastner and Kristina Ong for putting a PowerPoint presentation together that highlighted the major accomplishments and activities of the school year. ASB Advisor Mr. Dezember also deserves a round of applause for his leadership in working with the students and PTSA to convene such a successful event.
On Friday, May 14, we will conduct school-wide testing in Humanities and Math/Science. The data generated from this assessment is to help the staff become more informed about students’ learning across all grades, allowing us to identify strengths and weaknesses and to map trends in our instructional program; at the risk of stating the obvious, please do your best so we know how to best adjust our instructional program to serve our learners’ needs. Your participation is important. Thank you for your cooperation.
AP testing continues through this Wednesday. Go, scholars! I’m impressed with your academic stamina!
We will have a couple of visitors on campus this Wednesday and Thursday, one from a local school district and one from a start-up aviation-themed school in Michigan. Each will most likely want to sit in on classes, so please be responsive to their requests for information and make them feel welcomed (as you always do!).
Our week concludes with the annual Talent Show on Friday evening, sponsored by Culture Club. This is an event that just seems to get more spectacular each year, so I hope to see you there.

ATTENTION ALL AHS STUDENTS
This Friday, May 14th, marks the date of our 6th annual talent show! Come join us Under the Big Top, from 5:30-6:30 PM, and watch your fellow classmates reveal their hidden talents. Tickets will be on sale all week in the cafeteria during lunch. Ticket prices are $4 for students with ASB and $6 for students without. Adults can also purchase tickets for $8. We will be selling tickets on the night of the event as well. Can't wait to see you there!

Bethany Pupava placed 3rd in Floor Ex at the USAG Western Nationals Gymnastics competition last weekend in Des Moines, Iowa.
We have more Eagle Scouts, too! Congratulations, Alex Campisteguy and Alex Simkus, for earning this prestigious award! Please know that we wish to recognize all students who have become Eagle Scouts, so if your name hasn’t yet been mentioned in the NOTAM, it’s most likely because we haven’t heard from you or your parents.
Andrew Reece will be recognized this Friday as Sodo Rotary’s Student of the Month! Congratulations, Andrew!
Kudos to Sydney Miller, too! Sydney applied and was accepted into the MSE Materials Science Camp at the University of Washington this summer. Her tuition and meal costs will be funded by the sponsoring organizations. ASM Materials Camp allows high school students to experience the exciting field of material science in a hands-on way. Students have access to high-tech equipment and professional mentors to help them tackle real problems facing the field today.
All-School Laser Tag!
Buy your tickets for the all-school laser tag event taking place on Saturday,
May 15, 2010, 6:30-8:30pm, at LaserQuest in Federal Way! This event is open to all grades (9-12), ticket prices are $15.00 per person. There are only 60 slots available so once those are filled sales will close. Games are 20 minutes long and 30players can play in a game, so you get two games / 40 minutes of Laser Tag, and you get to raise money for your class! Pay either in the office or during lunch or advisory to Freshman Captain Tran Tonnu. Sales end Thursday!
ASB Class Captain Elections
Are you interested in serving your school? Want to help plan and carry out dances and fundraisers? Do you have a good idea to help raise school spirit? Serving as Class Captain allows you to do all this! Come to Mr. Dezember’s room next Monday, the 17th, at lunch. Applications are available now in the office, or at the information meeting. Elections will be held in June. See any ASB officer for more information.
SENIORS
The AHS Scholarship Packet is now posted on the AHS and PTSA websites. Thanks to our fabulous supporters, we will be able to award close to $35,000 this year. The top award is $5,000! I encourage all eligible students to apply. Mark your calendars for the June 6 Senior Awards Ceremony where all awards will be presented.
MENTOR & INTERNSHIP
Two part time summer internships have been posted with Erin Air, a private jet aircraft charter service located at King County International Airport. These 45 hour volunteer experiences will focus mainly on the business aspects of the Charter Company, with some interactions with pilots, managers and customers. This is a great way to get your aviation career started so check out the bulletin board outside the career center or talk with Mrs. Burr or Mrs. Pappas in the Career Center on how to apply.
COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS DUE!
To count for this school year, completed forms reflecting community service hours are due by Friday, June 4th! Remember, a minimum of 40 hours are required before graduation. Many seniors have not yet documented their 40 hours required. Please return your completed volunteer hours forms to Ms. Pappas or Ms. Carper no later than June 4th!
SPIRIT WEEK
Get ready for the last spirit week of the year! Show your AHS spirit the week before prom by participating in the days of spirit week. It doesn’t matter if you’re not going to Prom, we want everyone to show their spirit and get ready for summer by showing your last bit of school spirit before the long summer break. With all the final projects, studying, and exams, spirit week is a creative and fun way to take a little break from our typical day at school. Remember that your costume must be school appropriate!

FOOD DRIVE – GOING ON NOW!
INTERACT CLUB is sponsoring a school-wide food drive at Aviation High School, NOW THROUGH Friday, May 14. All members of Interact are dedicated to community service; our own Michael Thompson is the on-site coordinator for this event.
Let the challenge begin! All students in the grade collecting the most food (measured by weight) will be treated to a donut fest on a morning during the week of May 17.
Only dry and canned food will be accepted. Drop off your donations to the designated collection bins located in rooms as follows:

Kandyce (Kandy) Cowart and Brittany Boatright were AHS students from the class of 2009. On October 15, 2005 they both tragically died in a plane accident. The Love of Life and Love of Learning Awards were established to honor the legacy of both Kandy and Brittany. They were wonderful young ladies who will always hold a special place in the heart of Aviation High School. Each year, the Cowart and Boatright families commemorate their daughters’ lives by honoring two AHS students from each class who exemplify the values held by Kandy and Brittany. Now is your opportunity to pick up a nomination form from the office and nominate AHS students for the Love of Life and Love of Learning Awards. Nominations will be due to the office by

Come be part of AHS’s first ever Battle of the Bands! On June 4th the greatest bands AHS has ever seen will assemble to battle for the title of AHS’s Best Band. If you haven’t already heard, this year’s prom will be held aboard the Lady Mary and will be Masquerade-themed. Please keep in mind that masks will be provided but you may purchase your own mask only if it is a mask on a stick! No masks that are attached to your face can be worn, and will not be allowed into prom. There will be scheduled opportunities the week before prom where you will be able to decorate your mask and give it your own personal flair and creativity. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns about prom, feel free to bring them up to the Junior Class Captains, Sarah Canul or Miranda Sita. Thank you!
EXCITING SUMMER OPPORTUNITY: BLUE ANGELS
Do you love the Blue Angels? We have 4 volunteer positions available for AHS students to spend the week of August 2-8, 2010 working with Seafair to prepare for and then host the Blue Angels Air show. Part of the time you’ll just enjoy watching the Blue Angels practice their maneuvers, and you’ll get great job experience providing minor crowd control, escorting special guests, greeting VIPS and other duties too that make sure the show flows smoothly. More information and application procedure is available in the Career Office from Nancy Pappas and Julie Burr & on the bulletin board in the hallway- if you’re interested, let Ms. Pappas or Ms. Burr know asap to give yourself the best chance of being selected for this fun opportunity that also looks good on your resume and college applications!

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:
Thank you to everyone who participated in this morning’s presentation with Mr. Jim Albaugh, CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes! Our Science Olympians, Skunks, ACE’ers, and Flight by Design students showcased their learning in grand style and were exemplary ambassadors for our school. Many thanks to parents and mentors who also attended to show their support. And, of course, nothing would be possible without our talented teachers who make learning come alive in the classroom each day. Kudos to all!
We have another VIP on campus this Thursday from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Eric Lui is an author and motivational speaker who promotes creativity and imagination as keys to success. He loves out-of-the-box thinking that leads to new ways of doing business and operating schools. He’s intrigued with Aviation High School’s model so his visit on Thursday will be to share the uniqueness of our instructional program and school culture. I will be calling on some of you to meet with Mr. Lui.
AP testing begins tomorrow and continues through May 12. As I write this message on Saturday morning, I’ve already been greeted by several students who have arrived on campus to participate in a ‘cram session’ for AP Calculus. And, I know that there are more of these sessions to come! I commend our teachers for their commitment to your success, and I most definitely commend every AP student for taking on the opportunity and challenge of performing well in such rigorous courses. My very best to all of you as you take your exams this week and next! For our freshman and sophomores, I encourage you to start planning now for inclusion of AP offerings in your Flight II schedule. Colleges view AP classes as an indicator of how well prepared you are for college success, and we are fortunate at AHS to have a variety of AP offerings from which to choose.
Speaking of college-prepared students, we recently received notice from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation that five of our juniors scored high enough on the PSAT to enter the competition for a National Merit Scholarship in their senior year. Our top scholars are Thomas DeSilva, Banks Hunter, Olivia Pham, Betsy Smith, and Jim Stone. Congratulations, scholars!
I will close this week’s message with yet another reminder to attend tomorrow evening’s PTSA meeting, which is a celebration of the school year. Our students will be presenting the accomplishments of the school year, and we will be honoring key legislators and leaders for their support in helping us build a new school at the Museum of Flight. The program begins at 7:00 p.m., and it is important that we pack the PAC with families, students, and staff! See you there!

You can now request additional tickets for graduation. The form is available on-line at the AHS website in the section. Remember, every senior automatically receives six tickets free of charge. If you need more than six tickets, you must fill out the form and submit the form to Ms. Juarez. There is a $2 charge for each additional ticket.

For many high school girls going to the prom is an event anticipated for years, and not going because the family cannot afford a formal dress can be devastating. However, with Project PROMise these girls will be able to attend the prom in beautiful dresses donated by local organizations and community members. Aviation High School has been given 5 invitations for 5 girls to attend a shopping event on Saturday May 8th at the Doubletree Guest Suites in Tukwila. You will be greeted by a volunteer “Personal Shopper” who will help you select a dress for the prom. If you are in need of such an opportunity as this please see Lenore Stark for an invitation. This will be on a first come first serve basis.

It’s time to bring out your inner competiveness! Buy your tickets for the laser tag get-together on May 15, 2010, at LaserQuest in Federal Way! Tickets are $15.00 each and that includes two full games of laser tag. Games are 20 minutes long and 30 players can play a game. There are only 60 slots open for this event, so the first 30 freshmen and 30 sophomores who purchase their ticket first will get a spot! AeroTEC, a leading Seattle engineering and certification company, will be offering one or more paid summer internships to students from Aviation High School. The company is involved with many aspects of aeronautical engineering including design, testing, data analysis and reporting. The opportunities are directed primarily to juniors and seniors. Intramurals starts today! A reminder to all of those participating in Intramurals, today is the first day that we will be playing. We will be meeting on the soccer field today, and your signed copy of the ethics code is due prior to starting. Spectators are welcome. Activities should not go past 5:00 p.m.
SCOTTISH HIGHLAND DANCERS
Congratulations to Aviation High School’s competitive Scottish Highland dancers, Danica Balsiger and Kyra Sutherland. They competed in the Seattle Highland Dance Association’s spring competition on April 24th. Danica earned 6th place in both the Fling and the Seann Truibhas, and 5th place in both the Sword and the Highland Reel. Kyra earned a 6th place in the Highland Reel, and a 4th place in the Irish Jig. They will both attend the Northwest Regional Championship on May 15th in Spokane. There they compete against dancers from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming. Top competitors in Spokane go on to represent the Northwest Region at nationals, the United States Inter-Regional Championship in Traverse City, Michigan in August. Wish them luck!
GREAT WAY TO SPEND YOUR LUNCHTIME!
Mr. Ben Forest, one of our very active mentors (he has 3 mentees, all named Alex), will be offering a “Civil Aviation Forum” for all AHS students next Tuesday, May 4, during lunch. Mr. Forest has invited several successful aviation professionals who are eager to join him to share with you the career path they took, and offer you information and success strategies for your own career. Details will be posted on the bulletin board outside the Career Center and an announcement will be made next Tuesday- stay tuned, you won’t want to miss this!

NICE WORK DERRIC AND CLAIRE!
Many, many thanks to DERRIC SMITH and CLAIRE FERNANDEZ for their amazing MC-ing skills! As mentees, these three students volunteered to develop the agenda and MC the most recent Mentor Meeting. During the breakfast event on April 21st, they welcomed over 80 mentors and students, shared program updates, and provided great insight into their own mentor/mentee experiences. Additionally, Claire presented a video program she produced through an internship – it was great! It was a spirited meeting, and wildly successful thanks to their professionalism and humor.

EXCITING SUMMER OPPORTUNITY: BLUE ANGELS
Do you love the Blue Angels? We have 4 volunteer positions available for AHS students to spend the week of August 2-8, 2010 working with Seafair to prepare for and then host the Blue Angels Air show. Part of the time you’ll just enjoy watching the Blue Angels practice their maneuvers, and you’ll get great job experience providing minor crowd control, escorting special guests, greeting VIPS and other duties too that make sure the show flows smoothly. MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:
Thank you to everyone who participated in this morning’s presentation with Mr. Jim Albaugh, CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes! Our Science Olympians, Skunks, ACE’ers, and Flight by Design students showcased their learning in grand style and were exemplary ambassadors for our school. Many thanks to parents and mentors who also attended to show their support. And, of course, nothing would be possible without our talented teachers who make learning come alive in the classroom each day. Kudos to all!
We have another VIP on campus this Thursday from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Eric Lui is an author and motivational speaker who promotes creativity and imagination as keys to success. He loves out-of-the-box thinking that leads to new ways of doing business and operating schools. He’s intrigued with Aviation High School’s model so his visit on Thursday will be to share the uniqueness of our instructional program and school culture. I will be calling on some of you to meet with Mr. Lui.
AP testing begins tomorrow and continues through May 12. As I write this message on Saturday morning, I’ve already been greeted by several students who have arrived on campus to participate in a ‘cram session’ for AP Calculus. And, I know that there are more of these sessions to come! I commend our teachers for their commitment to your success, and I most definitely commend every AP student for taking on the opportunity and challenge of performing well in such rigorous courses. My very best to all of you as you take your exams this week and next! For our freshman and sophomores, I encourage you to start planning now for inclusion of AP offerings in your Flight II schedule. Colleges view AP classes as an indicator of how well prepared you are for college success, and we are fortunate at AHS to have a variety of AP offerings from which to choose.
Speaking of college-prepared students, we recently received notice from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation that five of our juniors scored high enough on the PSAT to enter the competition for a National Merit Scholarship in their senior year. Our top scholars are Thomas DeSilva, Banks Hunter, Olivia Pham, Betsy Smith, and Jim Stone. Congratulations, scholars!
I will close this week’s message with yet another reminder to attend tomorrow evening’s PTSA meeting, which is a celebration of the school year. Our students will be presenting the accomplishments of the school year, and we will be honoring key legislators and leaders for their support in helping us build a new school at the Museum of Flight. The program begins at 7:00 p.m., and it is important that we pack the PAC with families, students, and staff! See you there!

For many high school girls going to the prom is an event anticipated for years, and not going because the family cannot afford a formal dress can be devastating. However, with Project PROMise these girls will be able to attend the prom in beautiful dresses donated by local organizations and community members. Aviation High School has been given 5 invitations for 5 girls to attend a shopping event on Saturday May 8th at the Doubletree Guest Suites in Tukwila. You will be greeted by a volunteer “Personal Shopper” who will help you select a dress for the prom. If you are in need of such an opportunity as this please see Lenore Stark for an invitation. This will be on a first come first serve basis.

It’s time to bring out your inner competiveness! Buy your tickets for the laser tag get-together on May 15, 2010, at LaserQuest in Federal Way! Tickets are $15.00 each and that includes two full games of laser tag. Games are 20 minutes long and 30 players can play a game. There are only 60 slots open for this event, so the first 30 freshmen and 30 sophomores who purchase their ticket first will get a spot! SCOTTISH HIGHLAND DANCERS
Congratulations to Aviation High School’s competitive Scottish Highland dancers, Danica Balsiger and Kyra Sutherland. They competed in the Seattle Highland Dance Association’s spring competition on April 24th. Danica earned 6th place in both the Fling and the Seann Truibhas, and 5th place in both the Sword and the Highland Reel. Kyra earned a 6th place in the Highland Reel, and a 4th place in the Irish Jig. They will both attend the Northwest Regional Championship on May 15th in Spokane. There they compete against dancers from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming. Top competitors in Spokane go on to represent the Northwest Region at nationals, the United States Inter-Regional Championship in Traverse City, Michigan in August. Wish them luck!

NICE WORK DERRIC AND CLAIRE!
Many, many thanks to DERRIC SMITH and CLAIRE FERNANDEZ for their amazing MC-ing skills! As mentees, these three students volunteered to develop the agenda and MC the most recent Mentor Meeting. During the breakfast event on April 21st, they welcomed over 80 mentors and students, shared program updates, and provided great insight into their own mentor/mentee experiences. Additionally, Claire presented a video program she produced through an internship – it was great! It was a spirited meeting, and wildly successful thanks to their professionalism and humor.

AHS students are invited to participate in Northwest Harvest’s annual “Fight Hunger with the Mariners” event on Saturday, May 22nd. MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:
Parents and students: As many of you may have already heard, the state is again facing a revenue shortfall, which means less money for all public schools. The Highline District will have to cut next year’s budget by an estimated $3.4 M. District staff is developing a list of potential budget cuts and their impacts. We do not yet know if any recommendations directly related to Aviation High School will be made, but community members and staff are invited to give feedback on the cuts at two community budget workshops:
Saturday, May 1, 9:00-11:00 a.m. – Hazel Valley Elementary
Tuesday, May 4, 6:00-8:00 p.m. – Mount Rainier High School
I am encouraging you to attend the Saturday, May 1 meeting rather than the one on Tuesday, May 4. My reason is simple and straightforward: On Tuesday, May 4, the PTSA is holding its culminating meeting of the year at the PAC, starting at 7:00 p.m., and attendance by parents, families, and AHS students and staff is very important. The PTSA is mailing an invitation to each family (and parents of incoming students as well), which includes more details. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend!
And FYI regarding the district budget meetings: If you are unable to attend a budget workshop, an online survey will be posted at www.hsd401.org on May 5. I encourage everyone to complete this survey!
Hearty congratulations are in order for several folks this week:
Sarah Canul for being accepted into SBRI’s BioQuest Academy. While at BioQuest Academy, Sarah will gain the opportunity to develop her lab skills while working with scientists who are researching infectious diseases. And, she gets paid for the summer experience!
Tyler Christopher, a freshman, has qualified to participate in the Junior Olympic National men’s gymnastics competition in Knoxville, Tennessee. Tyler qualified by finishing 5th all around and will be a member of the regional team representing Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington at nationals.
Speech & Debate Team for entertaining everyone with a very suspenseful and fun Mystery Dinner last Friday evening!
Jenny Gao, a sophomore, for winning a $1,000 college scholarship from the U.S. Institute of Peace! The Institute selected Jenny as a first-place winner from WA State, based on the merits of an essay that she submitted. In addition to the scholarship, Jenny is also getting an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. June 20-25 to be recognized at the National Peace Essay Awards Program.

As an FYI, we also have a VIP on campus next Monday—Mr. Jim Albaugh, the new CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. He will be visiting from 9:00-10:00 a.m., and I will be asking the Robotics, Science Olympiad, and ACE teams to ‘suit up (in uniforms) and show up’ in the Gym by 9:00 a.m. Monday morning. I am also requesting that you set up your displays and artifacts in the Gym prior to leaving school this Friday so that we can maximize our time on Monday.

JUNIORS AND SENIORS: REGISTRATION
Thanks for your participation in tennis shoe registration over the last two weeks! It has been exciting for us to try out this new process; thank you for your help making it go smoothly, for your patience as we work through the kinks, and for your suggestions about how we can improve it. Before we finalize your schedule for next year, we need to look over the courses you signed up for as well as the ones you need and wish you could have signed up for. The registration process and your suggestions have given us the data we need to move forward. If you don’t think you got every class you wanted, please do not panic; the registration process is not over. We are currently checking your credits and will be finalizing your 2010-11 schedules, hopefully before the end of May. If you have questions or concerns in the meantime, please send a note or email to Ms. Carper or Mr. McComb.
JUNIORS (AND SOPHOMORES): SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES
Make the most of your summer by participating in full internships, “mini internships” or expanded job shadows. You’ll learn a lot about the real world, gain experience and networking contacts and have an edge over others who haven’t had these experiences. Internships with the Museum of Flight’s Pathfinders Program are listed on the bulletin board outside the Career Center as well as two paid internships with London Aviation Underwriters. More exciting opportunities, including internships with Sea Tac Airport, Alaska and Horizon Air and SeaFair’s Blue Angels are coming up. While these opportunities are geared primarily to AHS Juniors, motivated sophomores will be considered. Advise Julie Burr, Nancy Pappas or Marge Kiser in the Career Center, (Room 11) of your interest. All these opportunities have deadlines, so check the bulletin board regularly.

If you haven’t already heard, this year’s prom will be held aboard the Lady Mary and will be Masquerade themed keep in mind that masks will be provided but you may purchase your own mask only if it is a mask on a stick! No masks that are attached to your face can be worn, and will not be allowed into prom. There will be scheduled opportunities the week before prom where you will be able to decorate your mask and give it your own personal flare and creativity. ULTIMATE FRISBEE!
Aviation High School is getting a Frisbee team! Yes, it is a real sport! I know you have all been waiting, so if you are interested please talk to or email Banks Hunter (banks.hunt@gmail.com). Practices will probably be casual for a couple of hours after school maybe two days a week, and if enough people are interested we could host an Ultimate clinic and practices over the summer. Let's build up a real program for a competitive team next year! Ultimate Frisbee is a great complement to sports of the mind, and spring is a good time to enjoy this sport! Come play Ultimate; it's fun!
FOOD DRIVE – GOING ON NOW!
In response to a district wide call for giving back and contributing to our local food banks, INTERACT CLUB is sponsoring a school-wide food drive at Aviation High School, NOW THROUGH April 30. All members of Interact are dedicated to community service; our own Michael Thompson is the on-site coordinator.
Let the challenge begin! All students in the grade collecting the most food (measured by weight) will be treated to a donut fest on a morning during the week of May 2. Please check the Career Center for specific locations.
Only dry and canned food will be accepted. All items collected will benefit our neighbors in need through the Des Moines, White Center and Highline food banks.

Kandyce (Kandy) Cowart and Brittany Boatright were AHS students from the class of 2009. On October 15, 2005 they both tragically died in a plane accident. The Love of Life and Love of Learning Awards were established to honor the legacy of both Kandy and Brittany. They were wonderful young ladies who will always hold a special place in the heart of Aviation High School. Each year, the Cowart and Boatright families commemorate their daughters lives by honoring two AHS students from each class who exemplify the values held by Kandy and Brittany. Now is your opportunity to pick up a nomination form from the office and nominate AHS students for the Love of Life and Love of Learning Awards. Nominations will be due to the office by

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:
Parents and students: As many of you may have already heard, the state is again facing a revenue shortfall, which means less money for all public schools. The Highline District will have to cut next year’s budget by an estimated $3.4 M. District staff is developing a list of potential budget cuts and their impacts. We do not yet know if any recommendations directly related to Aviation High School will be made, but community members and staff are invited to give feedback on the cuts at two community budget workshops:

Tuesday, May 4, 6:00-8:00 p.m. – Mount Rainier High School
I am encouraging you to attend the Saturday, May 1 meeting rather than the one on Tuesday, May 4. My reason is simple and straightforward: On Tuesday, May 4, the PTSA is holding its culminating meeting of the year at the PAC, starting at 7:00 p.m., and attendance by parents, families, and AHS students and staff is very important. The PTSA is mailing an invitation to each family (and parents of incoming students as well), which includes more details. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend!
And FYI regarding the district budget meetings: If you are unable to attend a budget workshop, an online survey will be posted at www.hsd401.org on May 5. I encourage everyone to complete this survey!
Hearty congratulations are in order for several folks this week:
Sarah Canul for being accepted into SBRI’s BioQuest Academy. While at BioQuest Academy, Sarah will gain the opportunity to develop her lab skills while working with scientists who are researching infectious diseases. And, she gets paid for the summer experience!
Tyler Christopher, a freshman, has qualified to participate in the Junior Olympic National men’s gymnastics competition in Knoxville, Tennessee. Tyler qualified by finishing 5th all around and will be a member of the regional team representing Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington at nationals.
Speech & Debate Team for entertaining everyone with a very suspenseful and fun Mystery Dinner last Friday evening!
Jenny Gao, a sophomore, for winning a $1,000 college scholarship from the U.S. Institute of Peace! The Institute selected Jenny as a first-place winner from WA State, based on the merits of an essay that she submitted. In addition to the scholarship, Jenny is also getting an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. June 20-25 to be recognized at the National Peace Essay Awards Program.

As an FYI, we also have a VIP on campus next Monday—Mr. Jim Albaugh, the new CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. He will be visiting from 9:00-10:00 a.m., and I will be asking the Robotics, Science Olympiad, and ACE teams to ‘suit up (in uniforms) and show up’ in the Gym by 9:00 a.m. Monday morning. I am also requesting that you set up your displays and artifacts in the Gym prior to leaving school this Friday so that we can maximize our time on Monday.

Thanks for your participation in tennis shoe registration over the last two weeks! It has been exciting for us to try out this new process; thank you for your help making it go smoothly, for your patience as we work through the kinks, and for your suggestions about how we can improve it. Before we finalize your schedule for next year, we need to look over the courses you signed up for as well as the ones you need and wish you could have signed up for. The registration process and your suggestions have given us the data we need to move forward. If you don’t think you got every class you wanted, please do not panic; the registration process is not over. We are currently checking your credits and will be finalizing your 2010-11 schedules, hopefully before the end of May. If you have questions or concerns in the meantime, please send a note or email to Ms. Carper or Mr. McComb.
JUNIORS (AND SOPHOMORES): SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES
Make the most of your summer by participating in full internships, “mini internships” or expanded job shadows. You’ll learn a lot about the real world, gain experience and networking contacts and have an edge over others who haven’t had these experiences. Internships with the Museum of Flight’s Pathfinders Program are listed on the bulletin board outside the Career Center as well as two paid internships with London Aviation Underwriters. More exciting opportunities, including internships with Sea Tac Airport, Alaska and Horizon Air and SeaFair’s Blue Angels are coming up. While these opportunities are geared primarily to AHS Juniors, motivated sophomores will be considered. Advise Julie Burr, Nancy Pappas or Marge Kiser in the Career Center, (Room 11) of your interest. All these opportunities have deadlines, so check the bulletin board regularly.

Do you love the Blue Angels? We have 4 volunteer positions available for AHS students to spend the week of August 2-8, 2010 working with Seafair to prepare for and then host the Blue Angels Air show. Part of the time you’ll just enjoy watching the Blue Angels practice their maneuvers, and you’ll get great job experience providing minor crowd control, escorting special guests, greeting VIPS and other duties too that make sure the show flows smoothly. It doesn’t matter how you raise your hand…but raise it in support of National Volunteer Week! It’s also the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, so it’s a great time to go green! Ecology Club is leading some efforts around our school, so I hope you will get involved, either at school or within the community. You can also earn some community service hours, which are required for graduation! Please join me, too, in giving a special thanks to all of our mentors and volunteers who support AHS! Thank you, one and all!
Let’s give a warm welcome back to our Skunkworks Robotics Team, who have just returned from Atlanta, Georgia! According to Coach Steele, the team performed very well, with the CAD team earning a special award for their Inventor model of the robot. In spite of many trying mechanical and software issues that plagued the robot, the team exhibited gracious professionalism, playing well on Gallileo. Coach Steele notes that the drive team and pit crew deserve special mention for problem solving . Those members are Alex Campisteguy, Navid Shafa, Sam Swan, Lamond Le, Shawn Moes, Jennifer Minar, Scott Anderson, and Isaac Ackerman. Credit also goes to the Chairman’s Award Team for impressing the judges with their extraordinary skills--Lydia Johnston, Jennifer Minar and Thomas DeSilva. Congratulations to the entire team, Coach Steele, mentors and parents!
Seniors, I’ll be working on the scholarship packet this week with clear intent to get it out to you by end of week. We will post it on our website for you to download, and a limited number of copies will be available in the Counseling Office. I encourage all of you to review the various scholarships that are available and make application for at least one of them! The recipients will be announced at the Senior Awards Ceremony on Sunday, June 6. In addition, seniors, we are asking that you provide college information to us so that we can start preparing the insert for your graduation program. Mrs. Hiranaka will provide forms to your advisors this week, and it is essential that ALL of you complete them. If your college decisions then change after submitting the form, you should advise your advisor and Mrs. Hiranaka so that we are sure to report accurately. Thanks in advance for your attention to this responsibility.
A reminder to mark your calendars for the evening of May 4 to attend the PTSA General Membership Meeting at the Performing Arts Center in Burien. Our students will be presenting and key community dignitaries will be recognized. Please show your support and gratitude to our PTSA by attending this ‘year in review’ event!
Congratulations to Andrew May who was recognized by Sodo Rotary last week as our May Student of the Month! Our April student is Andrew Reece (who was in Atlanta last week), who will be recognized in May. Andrew and Andrew now join other senior honorees who will be considered for a rotary scholarship.
Congratulations, too, to Sam Swan who is being honored by the Southcenter Chamber of Commerce as their May Business Student of the Month! Sam wrote an inspiring essay that spoke to how learning about engineering has been accompanied by business practices. Sam, too, will now be part of a pool of applicants for a Chamber scholarship.
There’s also very good news to share about our capital campaign to help us build a new school at the Museum of Flight! The legislature adjourned last week, with $2,000,000 appropriated in the Capital Budget for AHS! This appropriation represents the hard work of many people, but at the heart of the legislature’s decision was YOU, the students who believe in our vision and mission and show up every day, ready to learn and intent on making a difference in the world as engineers, scientists, aviators, researchers, innovators etc. You have repeatedly showcased your learning in grand style as we’ve welcomed and hosted many visitors—and all of the combined efforts have resulted in this appropriation! Please know how grateful I am to all of you, our business and industry partners, your parents and families, and our incredible staff for such amazing support and commitment! In addition to the $2M, the legislature also passed a bill that designates Aviation High School as a lighthouse model of STEM education in Washington State. As such, we will have a few more resources to share our story with other schools that wish to develop a STEM model of teaching and learning. All of this is cause to celebrate and keep up the efforts that move us closer to our dream school at the Museum of Flight! Again…sincere thanks and congratulations to all who truly do believe that the sky is NOT the limit!

We’ve got something for everyone, no matter what you’re interested in.
The class is fun, fast-paced, and exciting – we run a real business, earning our operational costs through advertising and subscription sales, and by producing a newspaper that is relevant, informative and interesting to our community – that’s you! Published articles are great for portfolios, and leadership positions can really make your college application stand out from the crowd.

INTRAMURAL SPORTS
Spring is here and the weather is great; so why aren't you playing sports? Aviation High School Intramurals is designed to allow students here at AHS with an outlet for physical activity as well as a place to hang out with friends. We had our first intramurals meeting last Thursday, rosters have been handed out and remain available at the office. They are due on Wednesday. Intramurals will be happening in May and will encompass both soccer and basketball in tournament style. If you want to participate, act now! There will be a lunchtime meeting for all who wish to participate in intramurals on Tuesday, April 20th in Mr. Dezember's room.

Come and support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation on April 25th, sponsored by Stacy Blunts’ Senior Project. The tournament is starts 1:00 pm and is a shotgun scramble format at Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club in Federal Way. The cost is $100 for an adult and $75 for a junior. The entry includes a round of golf, carts, banquet dinner and raffle. Feel free to sign up by yourself or sign up with your own foursome. HAPPY EARTH DAY FROM ECOLOGY CLUB!
This week Aviation High School is celebrating the 40th anniversary of Earth Day! Starting with our kick-off assembly on Monday, students can use this as an opportunity to focus on greening our school and their lives. Becoming a green school doesn’t have to be hard, as long as we have student support. The AHS Ecology Club will also offer an after school garden clean-up on Earth Day, Thursday April 22. The clean-up will start at 3:30 and go until 5 and counts as community service hours. See you at the garden clean-up and have a great Earth Day!

Kandyce (Kandy) Cowart and Brittany Boatright were AHS students from the class of 2009. On October 15, 2005 they both tragically died in a plane accident. The Love of Life and Love of Learning Awards were established to honor the legacy of both Kandy and Brittany. They were wonderful young ladies who will always hold a special place in the heart of Aviation High School. Each year, the Cowart and Boatright families commemorate their daughters lives by honoring two AHS students from each class who exemplify the values held by Kandy and Brittany. Now is your opportunity to pick up a nomination form from the office and nominate AHS students for the Love of Life and Love of Learning Awards. Nominations will be due to the office by

WHAT’S IT LIKE IN SPACE?
Aviation High School students, faculty, staff and mentors will have an exciting opportunity to talk live via SKYPE with Dr. Michael Barrett, a physician, astronaut and pilot who works with NASA and recently returned from a long run in the international space station. On April 21st from approximately 12:30 -2:00 pm we will gather in the gym for this interactive opportunity. Dr. Barrett will start by sharing the highlights of his career and then spend about 15 minutes describing what human space flight is like. “Do the students have specific interests?” he asked. “What about life support systems in space? Habitability? Flight ops?” His fascinating presentation is sure to generate even more questions and there will be plenty of time to ask him. We’re developing the specifics of the program and how many students and adults will be able to participate, but stay tuned for more details and if you’re particularly interested in attending, let Julie Burr know, she’s in the Career Center’s Office of Internships and Mentoring,

The UW’s Engineering Discovery Days continues the tradition of sharing their work with students, teachers and families. Registration is now open.
Saturday, April 24: High School, Community College Students and Pre-Majors: In addition to the exhibits and activities, students and their families learn about college admissions and university life. Presenters include UW Admissions, Scholarships and Financial Aid, Housing & Food services, and the Honors program.

It doesn’t matter how you raise your hand…but raise it in support of National Volunteer Week! It’s also the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, so it’s a great time to go green! Ecology Club is leading some efforts around our school, so I hope you will get involved, either at school or within the community. You can also earn some community service hours, which are required for graduation! Please join me, too, in giving a special thanks to all of our mentors and volunteers who support AHS! Let’s give a warm welcome back to our Skunkworks Robotics Team, who have just returned from Atlanta, Georgia! According to Coach Steele, the team performed very well, with the CAD team earning a special award for their Inventor model of the robot. In spite of many trying mechanical and software issues that plagued the robot, the team exhibited gracious professionalism, playing well on Gallileo. Coach Steele notes that the drive team and pit crew deserve special mention for problem solving . Those members are Alex Campisteguy, Navid Shafa, Sam Swan, Lamond Le, Shawn Moes, Jennifer Minar, Scott Anderson, and Isaac Ackerman. Credit also goes to the Chairman’s Award Team for impressing the judges with their extraordinary skills--Lydia Johnston, Jennifer Minar and Thomas DeSilva. Congratulations to the entire team, Coach Steele, mentors and parents!
Seniors, I’ll be working on the scholarship packet this week with clear intent to get it out to you by end of week. We will post it on our website for you to download, and a limited number of copies will be available in the Counseling Office. I encourage all of you to review the various scholarships that are available and make application for at least one of them! The recipients will be announced at the Senior Awards Ceremony on Sunday, June 6. In addition, seniors, we are asking that you provide college information to us so that we can start preparing the insert for your graduation program. Mrs. Hiranaka will provide forms to your advisors this week, and it is essential that ALL of you complete them. If your college decisions then change after submitting the form, you should advise your advisor and Mrs. Hiranaka so that we are sure to report accurately. Thanks in advance for your attention to this responsibility.
A reminder to mark your calendars for the evening of May 4 to attend the PTSA General Membership Meeting at the Performing Arts Center in Burien. Our students will be presenting and key community dignitaries will be recognized. Please show your support and gratitude to our PTSA by attending this ‘year in review’ event!
Congratulations to Andrew May who was recognized by Sodo Rotary last week as our May Student of the Month! Our April student is Andrew Reece (who was in Atlanta last week), who will be recognized in May. Andrew and Andrew now join other senior honorees who will be considered for a rotary scholarship.
Congratulations, too, to Sam Swan who is being honored by the Southcenter Chamber of Commerce as their May Business Student of the Month! Sam wrote an inspiring essay that spoke to how learning about engineering has been accompanied by business practices. Sam, too, will now be part of a pool of applicants for a Chamber scholarship.
There’s also very good news to share about our capital campaign to help us build a new school at the Museum of Flight! The legislature adjourned last week, with $2,000,000 appropriated in the Capital Budget for AHS! This appropriation represents the hard work of many people, but at the heart of the legislature’s decision was YOU, the students who believe in our vision and mission and show up every day, ready to learn and intent on making a difference in the world as engineers, scientists, aviators, researchers, innovators etc. You have repeatedly showcased your learning in grand style as we’ve welcomed and hosted many visitors—and all of the combined efforts have resulted in this appropriation! Please know how grateful I am to all of you, our business and industry partners, your parents and families, and our incredible staff for such amazing support and commitment! In addition to the $2M, the legislature also passed a bill that designates Aviation High School as a lighthouse model of STEM education in Washington State. As such, we will have a few more resources to share our story with other schools that wish to develop a STEM model of teaching and learning. All of this is cause to celebrate and keep up the efforts that move us closer to our dream school at the Museum of Flight! Again…sincere thanks and congratulations to all who truly do believe that the sky is NOT the limit!

Welcome back from Spring Break! I hope your days away from school were fun, exciting, relaxing, or whatever you hoped they would be!
Today is the start of our final quarter of the school year, so it’s a good time to review and refine your academic goals. A variety of school activities and events are scheduled for this quarter, so careful planning is essential to ensure a successful completion of the current school year and transition to 2010-11! Starting with the end in mind, the following may help with your planning:
June 23: last day of school for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors!
June 17: commencement ceremonies at the PAC; admittance by ticket only; school day for freshmen, sophomores and juniors will be from 12:30-3:30 p.m. School bus transportation will be adjusted on this date to accommodate the schedule. Watch for more information at a later date.

On Wednesday, 14 April, next year’s seniors (class of 2011) will have an opportunity to register for next year’s classes. This year, we are excited to allow you to get involved in choosing your classes for next year through a process called tennis-shoe registration. In tennis-shoe registration, YOU get to prioritize which classes are most important to you by signing up for those classes first.
In preparation for registration, your advisor will talk with you about the registration process. Registration forms and a DRAFT of the master calendar are available on the AHS website: Aviationhs.org. We strongly recommend that you spend time prior to registration thinking carefully about the classes you want to take, talking with teachers and parents, and considering the requirements of the colleges which you are hoping to attend.
On Tuesday in advisory, we will model the process for you.
On Wednesday, you will register during advisory.
Sophomores: we will repeat the process for you next week; start thinking now about the classes you’d like to take. You’ll register Wednesday, 21 April.
AHS INTRAMURALS MEETING
This week on Thursday April 15th at 3:45 there will be a meeting in the gym. Anyone who is interested in participating in intramurals should attend this meeting to sign up their team, ask clarifying questions about the program, and get dates for when we will start playing. WHAT’S IT LIKE IN SPACE?
Aviation High School students, faculty, staff and mentors will have an exciting opportunity to talk live via SKYPE with Dr. Michael Barrett, a physician, astronaut and pilot who works with NASA and recently returned from a long run in the international space station. On April 21st from approximately 12:30 -2:00 pm we will gather in the gym for this interactive opportunity. Dr. Barrett will start by sharing the highlights of his career and then spend about 15 minutes describing what human space flight is like. “Do the students have specific interests?” he asked. “What about life support systems in space? Habitability? Flight ops?” His fascinating presentation is sure to generate even more questions and there will be plenty of time to ask him. We’re developing the specifics of the program and how many students and adults will be able to participate, but stay tuned for more details and if you’re particularly interested in attending, let Julie Burr know, she’s in the Career Center’s Office of Internships and Mentoring,

Welcome back from Spring Break! I hope your days away from school were fun, exciting, relaxing, or whatever you hoped they would be!
Today is the start of our final quarter of the school year, so it’s a good time to review and refine your academic goals. A variety of school activities and events are scheduled for this quarter, so careful planning is essential to ensure a successful completion of the current school year and transition to 2010-11! Starting with the end in mind, the following may help with your planning:
June 23: last day of school for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors!
June 17: commencement ceremonies at the PAC; admittance by ticket only; school day for freshmen, sophomores and juniors will be from 12:30-3:30 p.m. School bus transportation will be adjusted on this date to accommodate the schedule. Watch for more information at a later date.

Congratulations to our Skunks, their mentors, parents, and many volunteers for an outstanding performance this past weekend at the FIRST Regional Competition at Key Arena! If you attended any part of the three-day event you already know that our Skunkworks Robotics Team has placed Aviation High School on the map of premier FIRST teams in the Pacific Northwest! They are amazing in so many ways, both on the field and off, demonstrating a well-rounded skill set that includes technical, engineering, business, marketing and interpersonal competencies that are the hallmark of a premier team. One only has to observe them for a short while to realize that every member of the team believes in the mission of FIRST and is playing full out to ensure that they are competitive and that every other team is playing at full advantage. Our Skunks don’t just subscribe to FIRST’s mantra of ‘gracious professionalism’—they live it! And, because of their dedication and service to others within the community, they earned the highest award possible this past weekend—the Regional Chairman’s Award! Their trophy case will now showcase this wonderful award, and a fourth blue banner will be placed on their Wall of Fame. Again, congratulations, Skunks and Coach Steele and Coach Wilson! You definitely earned this top recognition, and we’re all very proud of you! Now…on to the World Championships in Atlanta in April!

Jason Lemley had a great meet at the Age Group Sectional Championship Swim Meet over the March 19th weekend…..over 110 teams were there from all over the west coast. He swam Friday morning in the 50 free Pre-lims…….barely made it into the “finals” on Friday night….was seated 7th……then swam the “finals” on Friday eve….and placed 2nd with a best time!! Then on Sat. morning….he swam the 100 free in “pre-lims”….again barely made it into the ‘finals’ on Saturday eve….was seated 7th…..and ended up WINNING the 100 free on Sat. evening…..so, needless to say…we were excited!! So…..a 2nd in the 50 free….and a 1st in the 100 free.

TWO EXCITING INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES - JUNIORS ONLY
We’ve posted two fabulous internship opportunities with the Museum of Flight Pathfinders Awards program; check them out on the bulletin board across from Room 11.
The two students selected will have the opportunity to work closely with several departments at the Museum of Flight, with a Senior Manager from Boeing, with the President of a consulting company, and with the two Pathfinder honorees themselves. This is a very prestigious program and interns will not only gain valuable experience and networking, but will be able to include the impressive internship on college and job applications.
The internships are part time, unpaid, and begin in late April; your work will continue through the Pathfinders Gala in October. You must have your own transportation. ASB Elections
It’s almost that time of year to elect new Executive Council members and Class
Captains for the 2010-2011 school year! If you are interested in running for office, stop by the office this Wednesday to pick up an application packet.
Mr. Dezember will be holding two separate informational meetings in room 22. All those planning to run for an Executive Council position must meet on Tuesday, March 30 during lunch. Similarly, students interested in running for a Class Captain position must meet on Tuesday, May 18 during lunch.
Keep in mind that the Executive Council application is due on Friday, April 1 and the Class Captain application is due on Thursday, May 20.

As a few of you may already know, Karan Grewal and Sean Crowley are working on preparing an intramurals program for the student body. But we need your help! Parental support is still needed in order to supervise the events. Only one parent has so far positively pledged their support. So, please urge your parents to help support intramurals so that you can take full advantage of the program. Games are slated to start in May, and will most likely be either soccer or basketball. There will be a meeting in the middle of April for those members of Sports Club and others who are interested in Intramurals. If you are interested, please let us know. The UW’s Engineering Discovery Days continues the tradition of sharing their work with students, teachers and families. Registration is now open.
Saturday, April 24: High School, Community College Students and Pre-Majors: In addition to the exhibits and activities, students and their families learn about college admissions and university life. Presenters include UW Admissions, Scholarships and Financial Aid, Housing & Food services, and the Honors program.

Congratulations to our Skunks, their mentors, parents, and many volunteers for an outstanding performance this past weekend at the FIRST Regional Competition at Key Arena! If you attended any part of the three-day event you already know that our Skunkworks Robotics Team has placed Aviation High School on the map of premier FIRST teams in the Pacific Northwest! They are amazing in so many ways, both on the field and off, demonstrating a well-rounded skill set that includes technical, engineering, business, marketing and interpersonal competencies that are the hallmark of a premier team. One only has to observe them for a short while to realize that every member of the team believes in the mission of FIRST and is playing full out to ensure that they are competitive and that every other team is playing at full advantage. Our Skunks don’t just subscribe to FIRST’s mantra of ‘gracious professionalism’—they live it! And, because of their dedication and service to others within the community, they earned the highest award possible this past weekend—the Regional Chairman’s Award! Their trophy case will now showcase this wonderful award, and a fourth blue banner will be placed on their Wall of Fame. Again, congratulations, Skunks and Coach Steele and Coach Wilson! You definitely earned this top recognition, and we’re all very proud of you! Now…on to the World Championships in Atlanta in April!

Jason Lemley had a great meet at the Age Group Sectional Championship Swim Meet over the March 19th weekend…..over 110 teams were there from all over the west coast. He swam Friday morning in the 50 free Pre-lims…….barely made it into the “finals” on Friday night….was seated 7th……then swam the “finals” on Friday eve….and placed 2nd with a best time!! Then on Sat. morning….he swam the 100 free in “pre-lims”….again barely made it into the ‘finals’ on Saturday eve….was seated 7th…..and ended up WINNING the 100 free on Sat. evening…..so, needless to say…we were excited!! So…..a 2nd in the 50 free….and a 1st in the 100 free.

TWO EXCITING INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES - JUNIORS ONLY
We’ve posted two fabulous internship opportunities with the Museum of Flight Pathfinders Awards program; check them out on the bulletin board across from Room 11.
The two students selected will have the opportunity to work closely with several departments at the Museum of Flight, with a Senior Manager from Boeing, with the President of a consulting company, and with the two Pathfinder honorees themselves. This is a very prestigious program and interns will not only gain valuable experience and networking, but will be able to include the impressive internship on college and job applications.
The internships are part time, unpaid, and begin in late April; your work will continue through the Pathfinders Gala in October. You must have your own transportation. Check out the detailed information on the bulletin board, and stop into the career center and talk with Julie Burr or Nancy Pappas for more information. WHAT’S IT LIKE IN SPACE?
Aviation High School students, faculty, staff and mentors will have an exciting opportunity to talk live via SKYPE with Dr. Michael Barrett, a physician, astronaut and pilot who works with NASA and recently returned from a long run in the international space station. On April 21st from approximately 12:30 -2:00 pm we will gather in the gym for this interactive opportunity. Dr. Barrett will start by sharing the highlights of his career and then spend about 15 minutes describing what human space flight is like. “Do the students have specific interests?” he asked. “What about life support systems in space? Habitability? Flight ops?” His fascinating presentation is sure to generate even more questions and there will be plenty of time to ask him. We’re developing the specifics of the program and how many students and adults will be able to participate, but stay tuned for more details and if you’re particularly interested in attending, let Julie Burr know, she’s in the Career Center’s Office of Internships and Mentoring, email

It’s almost that time of year to elect new Executive Council members and Class
Captains for the 2010-2011 school year! If you are interested in running for office, stop by the office this Wednesday to pick up an application packet.
Mr. Dezember will be holding two separate informational meetings in room 22. All those planning to run for an Executive Council position must meet on Tuesday, March 30 during lunch. Similarly, students interested in running for a Class Captain position must meet on Tuesday, May 18 during lunch.
Keep in mind that the Executive Council application is due on Friday, April 1 and the Class Captain application is due on Thursday, May 20.
Additional information will be provided over the course of the next few weeks so stay tuned!

As a few of you may already know, Karan Grewal and Sean Crowley are working on preparing an intramurals program for the student body. But we need your help! Parental support is still needed in order to supervise the events. Only one parent has so far positively pledged their support. So, please urge your parents to help support intramurals so that you can take full advantage of the program. Games are slated to start in May, and will most likely be either soccer or basketball. There will be a meeting in the middle of April for those members of Sports Club and others who are interested in Intramurals. If you are interested, please let us know. If you attended the Dan Hartley Potato Dinner last Friday, I’m sure you realize that our amazing PTSA again went all-out in planning and facilitating another successful and highly entertaining event! It was great fun to see so many of our graduates and their families in attendance, along with current and future students and families. And, I don’t think I’ve ever seen as many students perform ‘their’ version of an Irish Jig! While Lamond Le made it to the final two in the dance contest, the prize of an introductory flight lesson, courtesy of Galvin Flying Service, went to a lovely young lady who captured the heart and applause of the audience. I’m sure she’s much too young to fly yet, so perhaps her intro flight will be a scenic one instead. And, maybe there will even be room for Lamond!
We owe a big thanks to the organizers of the Dan Hartley Dinner—Liz Campisteguy and Bonnie Gustafson. All details were taken care of, thanks to these two amazing ladies and many other parents who worked with them. Seniors, you will particularly want to thank Mrs. Campisteguy and Mrs. Gustafson since the proceeds will fund scholarships for you! In addition to Liz and Bonnie, thanks goes to Elizabeth Chayer and her students for providing the Irish dancing; and to Peter Anderson for continuing the tradition of serving as Master of Ceremonies; and for Mr. Hoehne for bringing in the ‘dough’ as the auctioneer. I also extend sincere thanks to the Hartley family for again joining us for the event and reminding us of how very fortunate we were to have known Dan! To everyone who attended or played a role in the event, know that you are appreciated! I’m already looking forward to next year’s dinner!
So…freshmen and sophomores, I hope you are looking forward to attending the FIRST Robotics competition at Key Arena this Friday! Your permission forms should have been turned in last Friday, which is your ‘ticket’ to getting on the bus. We will be using the returned forms to assign you to a chaperone this week, and you will then be notified via your science teacher. On Friday, you will report to your chaperone’s room* (promptly…by 8:50 a.m. would be appreciated!), then be escorted to the busses, which will depart at 9:05 a.m. You are to be in school dress code, too! While you will see some other teams in jeans, you will not see our Skunks in them! Our Skunkworks’ team prides themselves on being professionally dressed, along with exhibiting gracious professionalism in all they do. We expect the same of all of you. (Note: If I am your chaperone, you should report to my office; report to Mr. McComb’s office if he is your chaperone.)
So…how many days are left in third quarter? You do the counting, and as you do, I encourage you to make every minute of learning count.

PSCC is a unique educational institution located just down the street from Aviation High School at 18010-8th Avenue South. A variety of intensive career and technical education programs are offered throughout the school year as well as during the summer.
They are holding their Spring Open House this Wednesday, March 24th from 5 – 7pm. ANY prospective student who is going into high school or who is currently a high school student in the South King County area, along with their parents or guardians, are invited to attend. Second- year students will be available at a “Program Fair” in the Yormark Room, and instructors will be available in their labs/classrooms. Tours will also be available.
Summer school flyers will be available, too, but actual registration will NOT take place until April 19. Two separate summer sessions will be offered this year to increase student opportunity. Students earn 0.5 credits for successful completion of a summer school program.

LUNCH TIME DISCUSSION BRINGS DR. EDWARD DAVILA TO AHS
Take advantage of our casual “Lunch Time Launch” series to broaden your knowledge of careers, especially those involved math, science, engineering and technology. Our first meeting with Boeing Architect Thomas Hanson was very successful with 25 students participating and 7 staying longer for a small group discussion.
Our next speaker is a local PHYSICIAN, Dr. Edward Davila, who will be coming March 24th during lunch and Consultancy period. Our speakers’ series is an extension of our mentor program, designed to reach as many students as possible, grades 9-12.
ALL students are invited to bring their lunch and questions to Room 2 on Wednesday.
If you might be interested in pursuing a career in medicine, the types of medical careers within aviation/aerospace, or are just curious and want to talk to Dr. Davila about his profession, sign up in Rm 11 by Wednesday morning and plan on joining us for an enlightening conversation. ASM MATERIALS CAMP ... EXCITING STUDENTS ABOUT SCIENCE & ENGINEERING
ASM Materials Camp 2010 at the University of Washington, Seattle WA
July 5 – 10, 2010. This is for students entering their Junior or Senior year in high school in fall 2010.
The camp utilizes hands on learning principles of applied math and science. It is a very unique team based, intensive problem solving science experience under the direction of a distinguished world class faculty, “Materials Mentor.” The camp is a combination of mini demonstrations, field trips with extensive involvement in laboratory facilities to actively explore materials science and engineering principles.

TALENT SHOW
Ladies and Gentlemen, boys and girls, the Big Top Talent Show is coming to a school near you! You have the opportunity to perform with other talented artists from your very own school in the biggest Talent Show in AHS history! Join us on April 30th for this spectacular event! To all performers: auditions will be held on Wednesday April 14th and Friday April 16th in the gym from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. Show us what you can do!! Also, we have many behind the scenes jobs that must be filled including: Announcer, Talent Coordinator, Lighting Coordinator, Music Coordinator, Set Builders and Relocation Technicians. There will be a sign up list in the office for these positions.
ENGINEERING DISCOVERY DAYS
The UW’s Engineering Discovery Days continues the tradition of sharing their work with students, teachers and families. Registration is now open.
Saturday, April 24: High School, Community College Students and Pre-Majors: In addition to the exhibits and activities, students and their families learn about college admissions and university life. Presenters include UW Admissions, Scholarships and Financial Aid, Housing & Food services, and the Honors program.
Registration: Registration is required for groups of 10 or more and for groups arriving in buses. Registration is suggested for all who plan to participate so we can communicate any changes or logistical information. Click here to register

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:
If you attended the Dan Hartley Potato Dinner last Friday, I’m sure you realize that our amazing PTSA again went all-out in planning and facilitating another successful and highly entertaining event! It was great fun to see so many of our graduates and their families in attendance, along with current and future students and families. And, I don’t think I’ve ever seen as many students perform ‘their’ version of an Irish Jig! While Lamond Le made it to the final two in the dance contest, the prize of an introductory flight lesson, courtesy of Galvin Flying Service, went to a lovely young lady who captured the heart and applause of the audience. I’m sure she’s much too young to fly yet, so perhaps her intro flight will be a scenic one instead. And, maybe there will even be room for Lamond!
We owe a big thanks to the organizers of the Dan Hartley Dinner—Liz Campisteguy and Bonnie Gustafson. All details were taken care of, thanks to these two amazing ladies and many other parents who worked with them. Seniors, you will particularly want to thank Mrs. Campisteguy and Mrs. Gustafson since the proceeds will fund scholarships for you! In addition to Liz and Bonnie, thanks goes to Elizabeth Chayer and her students for providing the Irish dancing; and to Peter Anderson for continuing the tradition of serving as Master of Ceremonies; and for Mr. Hoehne for bringing in the ‘dough’ as the auctioneer. I also extend sincere thanks to the Hartley family for again joining us for the event and reminding us of how very fortunate we were to have known Dan! To everyone who attended or played a role in the event, know that you are appreciated! I’m already looking forward to next year’s dinner!
So…freshmen and sophomores, I hope you are looking forward to attending the FIRST Robotics competition at Key Arena this Friday! Your permission forms should have been turned in last Friday, which is your ‘ticket’ to getting on the bus. We will be using the returned forms to assign you to a chaperone this week, and you will then be notified via your science teacher. On Friday, you will report to your chaperone’s room* (promptly…by 8:50 a.m. would be appreciated!), then be escorted to the busses, which will depart at 9:05 a.m. You are to be in school dress code, too! While you will see some other teams in jeans, you will not see our Skunks in them! Our Skunkworks’ team prides themselves on being professionally dressed, along with exhibiting gracious professionalism in all they do. We expect the same of all of you. (Note: If I am your chaperone, you should report to my office; report to Mr. McComb’s office if he is your chaperone.)
So…how many days are left in third quarter? You do the counting, and as you do, I encourage you to make every minute of learning count.

Greetings from Puget Sound Skills Center (PSCC):
PSCC is a unique educational institution located just down the street from Aviation High School at 18010-8th Avenue South. A variety of intensive career and technical education programs are offered throughout the school year as well as during the summer.
They are holding their Spring Open House this Wednesday, March 24th from 5 – 7pm. ANY prospective student who is going into high school or who is currently a high school student in the South King County area, along with their parents or guardians, are invited to attend. Second- year students will be available at a “Program Fair” in the Yormark Room, and instructors will be available in their labs/classrooms. Tours will also be available.
Summer school flyers will be available, too, but actual registration will NOT take place until April 19. Two separate summer sessions will be offered this year to increase student opportunity. Students earn 0.5 credits for successful completion of a summer school program.

ASB Elections
It’s almost that time of year to elect new Executive Council members and Class
Captains for the 2010-2011 school year! If you are interested in running for office, stop by the office this Wednesday to pick up an application packet.
Mr. Dezember will be holding two separate informational meetings in room 22. All those planning to run for an Executive Council position must meet on Tuesday, March 30 during lunch. Similarly, students interested in running for a Class Captain position must meet on Tuesday, May 18 during lunch.
Keep in mind that the Executive Council application is due on
Friday, April 1 and the Class Captain application is due on Thursday, May 20.
Additional information will be provided over the course of the next few weeks so stay tuned!
LUNCH TIME DISCUSSION BRINGS DR. EDWARD DAVILA TO AHS
Take advantage of our casual “Lunch Time Launch” series to broaden your knowledge of careers, especially those involved math, science, engineering and technology. Our first meeting with Boeing Architect Thomas Hanson was very successful with 25 students participating and 7 staying longer for a small group discussion.
Our next speaker is a local PHYSICIAN, Dr. Edward Davila, who will be coming March 24th during lunch and Consultancy period. Our speakers’ series is an extension of our mentor program, designed to reach as many students as possible, grades 9-12.
ALL students are invited to bring their lunch and questions to Room 2 on Wednesday.
If you might be interested in pursuing a career in medicine, the types of medical careers within aviation/aerospace, or are just curious and want to talk to Dr. Davila about his profession, sign up in Rm 11 by Wednesday morning and plan on joining us for an enlightening conversation. The Film Festival is coming up on March 31, 2010 which is next week! But, the deadline for submission is March 26, 2010 which is this Friday! Turn in your films to either James Kelley or Libanos Redda via email, physical meeting, etc. It's not too late to still make a film, but if you do make sure you grab an information packet and put your name on the signup sheet list. On the day of the Film Festival, there will be a small concession stand providing snacks at a low cost. Can't wait to see you there!

SPORTS UPDATE
As a few of you may already know, Karan Grewal and Sean Crowley are working on preparing an intramurals program for the student body. But we need your help! Parental support is still needed in order to supervise the events. Only one parent has so far positively pledged their support. So, please urge your parents to help support intramurals so that you can take full advantage of the program. Games are slated to start in May, and will most likely be either soccer or basketball. There will be a meeting in the middle of April for those members of Sports Club and others who are interested in Intramurals. If you are interested, please let us know. ASM MATERIALS CAMP ... EXCITING STUDENTS ABOUT SCIENCE & ENGINEERING
ASM Materials Camp 2010 at the University of Washington, Seattle WA
July 5 – 10, 2010. This is for students entering their Junior or Senior year in high school in fall 2010.
The camp utilizes hands on learning principles of applied math and science. It is a very unique team based, intensive problem solving science experience under the direction of a distinguished world class faculty, “Materials Mentor.” The camp is a combination of mini demonstrations, field trips with extensive involvement in laboratory facilities to actively explore materials science and engineering principles.
